Mine say's verifying with itunes(It's been 2 hours like this). What should I do?
I force quit and now my itunes is locked. WonderfulGetting tired of those people who have no patience. Please be note that Apple does not have to update there whole update servers just to let people update in 1 day. The servers usage will eventually getting lower and you will eventually can update the iPhone. Though, I admit Apple should not give an ambiguous error like that.
Stop complain about apple as your complain doesn't make any sense economically.
And for those people who have slow downloading speed, stop complain too because that's your problem, not Apple. if you want to get it quickly then get a direct link to the IPSW file provide you know your iphone and how the naming convention of apple to the ipsw file. get it and put it on your download manager.

Just close itune and try it again.

Can you post screenshot? My best bet is for you to reinstall iTunes
dude it's all good, I restarted my macbook, can now access itunes, it's in recovery mode, restoring now, hopefully have IOS 5 soon.
Same error... Come on apple, I thought it was supposed to "just work".
Is anyone still receiving this message when they restore their iPhone?
I just bought a new AT&T 4S as device only yesterday. When I plug it in to iTunes everything seems fine but when I try to restore, it gives me the message "the iPhone could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build." I put the phone in DFU mode but I still get the same message. There isn't anything helpful on Apple's website either.
