to me all that ad say was that the droid is a poorly designed phone and are trying to come up with reasons why its superior than the iphone

last i checked, people like design and the iphone is no slouch performance wise

and i dont really care for apple. just a really piss poor ad

you NEVER allude to other products when trying to advertise your own...especially on a lacking that yours has

Like your medicine adds that go on about how wonderful they can make your day then finish off by listing every possible side effect

There's one on right now for an asthma med that says in its list of side effects that it "can increase the risk of asthma-related death." WTF? Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose?

It looks like a straight fact that Verizon is putting up a "no girls allowed" sign on the droid.

More like they're putting a "girls only" sign on the iPhone. Quite different.

If a Jeep ad made fun of the New Beetle as being girlie, would that mean they're saying Jeeps are for boys only? No, it means they're saying New Beetles are for girls only.

"Should a phone be pretty? Should it be a tiara-wearing digitally clueless beauty pageant queen? Or should it be fast?"

Likewise, the ad doesn't say the Droid is for boys only. The ad says that you shouldn't buy a phone just because it's pretty.

There will be plenty of women with Droids, just as there are many women with Jeeps. In fact, I'd say that women would agree that a pretty hairdo alone doesn't define a person's capabilities.

---- In any event, this whole thread takes the ad too seriously. It seems quite tongue in cheek to me.

I don't agree with you, and yes, I think in your example jeep would be alienating women. This ad clearly a) denigrates the iPhone, and b) casts the iPhone as girly. So the clear implication is, girly is bad.

It won't matter what you say to him.

Funny

I find it funny because only people I know that bought a Driod are girls. Besides I messed with the driod and locked it up 3 times and had to turn it off and back on. I dont think its all that great.

There is a cold remedy that states it's side effect can cause chills, sneezing, sniffling and flu-like symptoms. I don't get that at all either... More like it really doesn't do ANYTHING, and to prevent a class action lawsuit, they put that stuff in the fine print!

Apple should/could have fun with this messaging and remind people to Think Different.

Are you really Thinking Different with the iPhone? Everyone and their grandmother has one. It seems like having an iPhone is the trendy thing to do and the people who are buying Android phones are the people who Think Different.

Interesting, I don't know any girls who bought one. Everyone I know is looking to upgrade to the iPhone.

iPhone is the "different."

You do know that in the overall smartphone / phone market, iPhone doesn't have the majority market share at this time? Although iPhone is doing well in changing the industry.

FYI, iPhone is rated the best overall consumer and business smart phone.

The entire Droid campaign seems targeted at a distinctly young, tech savvy, and above all male demographic. The iPhone, on the other hand, appeals to men and women of all ages. I doubt you'll see many people's grandmothers carrying a Droid. To me it seems like a big marketing mistake.

I'll whole heartedly agree with this 100%. My g/f brought to my attention at the beginning of the 'Droid' campaign.

I'm not angry. I'm just amused to see how poorly Verizon seems to understand how to battle the iPhone. You won't become an iPhone Slayer by targeting such a narrow demographic; the iPhone's greatest feature has always been its broad appeal. Verizon doesn't seem to get that.

Verizon management is not very bright with this one. I thought their map commercials were good, but this is a mistake.

Also I feel sorry for them having to market the ridiculous name "droid".

Think Different is just a joke when referring to the iPhone. With the draconian moderation of the App Store you are only allowed to "think" as Apple allows on their phone. Want to "think different"? Get a phone with an OS that lets you do what you want, not what apple wants.

This ad is just odd and probably wont last long. They Droid ads where they say the Droid does in a world that doesnt (or something like that) is effective, imo, because a lot of people want a phone that does what apple keeps the iphone from doing.

I'd say more head up butt than tongue in cheek.

I love how they are paying George Lucas for the rights to use the word droid. Watch their commercials closely, and see the licensing at the end.

Introducing a new product into a crowded market in an economic downturn is difficult. They will have to stir up controversy so that people will advertise their phone for them. Apple put out the iPhone and every TV channel went bananas showing it off and talking about it. Verizon is hoping/praying that somebody will get enough buzz going to get the same free advertising.

A brand new ad by Verizon portrays the iPhone and its users as effeminate and empty headed. I think its ridiculous.
Guess I'm effeminate then. :p

To me, I like the iPhone because it does what I want to do. Not because it makes me look cool, or that it's a chick magnet, or whatever.

BTW, in the article, there are only 3 data points. A trend requires 7 data points. So we're basically looking at a snapshot of data which suggest some things, but don't show anything.

This isn't going to end up well.
Agree. This may end up backfiring on them in the long run.

Apple should/could have fun with this messaging and remind people to Think Different. As in - DON'T be a robot.
Good idea. Excited to see what Apple's response will be.

When I hear the word droid, I think of Star Wars when I hear the word droid and not a phone.

Most interesting. Didn't know this.

apple won't respond. They'll just keep doing their thing and outselling droids 10 to 1 or whatever it is. Responding only sends th message that they think the droid is a threat.

Completely agree. Apple won't respond directly. That would not be smart.

What I meant to say, is I will be interested in seeing if Apple tailors their new iPhone ads to be more technical in nature showing more features if you will. Now the focus seems on gaming.

That is the response I'm looking forward to. IMHO, the iPhone with added software is becoming a very nice PDA.

IDKY you say they won't respond. They responded to the first ads with the ad about how you can use maps, go on the internet, etc., while in a call.
