This is the first time I can remember not wanting to rush out and get the latest iPod after an announcement. The touch needs a hard drive and the classic doesn't offer enough to make me want to rush out and replace my iPod video (or 5th gen or whatever they are called).

I use the Nano for sport (Nike kit) and so having video on it is of no interest to me. In fact, I've long since stopped doing video on my full size iPod; the screen is just too small. That is the appeal of the touch (plus safari and wifi would be nice) but with no hard drive it's a non-starter for me.

If I get anything at all it will be a classic, but right now I think I'll keep what I have.

If it was 8mm thin, then yea the battery would be drained. But the HDD makes it thicker and therefore they can stick a bigger battery in there.
yes, make the ipod touch thicker and put a HDD in it and then they''d have a product that I'd buy. I don't want a phone to be my main player.

functionality over style

Just curious, how many are in the same boat as me? I've been wanting to replace my iPod Photo 60GB for a mega-high capacity iPod, with touch-screen and Wifi. Yesterday was kind of a bittersweet day for me -- happy for the 160GB hard drives and improved interface, unhappy that Apple would release only a Flash based iPod Touch, something that I'm considering to be a crippled product due to its limited storage space. I would have gladly shelled out $500 for a Touch with even just an 80 or 100GB hard drive, and I'm willing to bet there are a lot of people on this forum who would have also.

Anyway...I ordered a Black 160GB that's on the slow boat from China right now. How about you?

My thoughts exactly to the tee. So I ended up with a 160gb Silver Classic, but I don't feel as excited waiting for my new apple kit to arrive as I usually do. Still feels like I'm buying a 'tie over' ipod until they release a touch style device with a HDD.

I was dissapointed too. I've decided to go for an 80GB iPod classic. Still a great device, just not the widescreen touch that I was looking forward too.

It'll be my first iPod, as I've had an iRiver for years that's finally crapped out on me. As I've now got a mac, I decided, what with iTunes, it'll be alot easier to use an ipod.

My guess would be that apple will meet the consumer demand and put a HDD into the touch. (Finger's crossed!)

I doubt it - the battery life would really suck, its using enough with a massive bright screen anyway.

I'm holding out for a larger capacity Touch as my 3G with new battery is fine for now :)

Yeah i'm in the same boat. My 30gb iPod was full just from my music. I didn't have room for the podcasts, videos, photos, etc. I was planning on buying a large capacity touch screen iPod. I grabbed the 80GB classic and on the one hand, I feel like I got a great value. On the other hand, it looks so lame next to my iPhone...
