Another thing that makes me go to a lap or desk top is no support for Adobe flash.

Yeah, i find a lot of just little things that have me reaching for the laptop.
its just not close for me. iOS is fine for cheap games, or simple workflows but... not much else. but i will say the pencil is kinda ok.

The problem is relative. It works for some people and for others, it doesn't. I don't think Apple is targeting everyone with these commercials. Rather, they're providing an option for many people would actually could replace their laptops with an iPad.

If the iPad is a laptop replacement, then an iPhone can also do it for those people.
Not the case at all. I don't know if you've compared the two products lately, but even an iPhone Plus model is still significantly smaller than the smallest iPad Pro, and can not/will not take advantage of the advanced multitasking of iOS for iPad.

Excellent points. The MacBook exist because others will utilize the MacBook for different capabilities, as where is the iPad will offer different capabilities and experience for users on a different level. Apple offers both products, because both products will meet different expectations for everybody's productivity differently. Like you said, the iPad doesn't target everybody, it targets the demographic that sees the iPad as an avenue for either an expansion to the MacBook or a replacement, which all depends on the users situation.

Exactly. A lot of people didn't even think of the iPad as a laptop replacement before Apple did those commercials.
Furthermore, an iPad not only replaces a laptop for these kind of people, they even benefit from it, since they gain abilities like using the Apple Pencil for drawing, having a more portal machine, which is easier to play around with on the couch and so on.

I'm still very happy with my MacBook Air, but it's probably the MacBook I've bought. The iPad Pro (especially with iOS 11) really became powerful enough that I don't have a need for another MacBook.

Not since the commercials necessarily, but more since the Pro came out.

Also, while we all sit here and debate and discuss this topic, there are a lot of people out there who went iPad-only years ago. My parents haven't had a PC in their house since getting their iPad 2 in 2011.

The commercials themselves are referring to the iPad Pro, but it's not just the hardware. But more specifically, the iPad Commercials are aimed at showing somebody what the Pro can do for them that their PC can do also. It's not just necessarily about the iPad Pro itself as it is a comparison. Both the laptop and iPad don't need to supersede each other. Only the user can decide the relevance of uses between both devices.

And while your parents may have gone iPad only since 2011, the more enhanced capabilities are about to be released with iOS 11 and more so with multitasking. Granted, the iPads features today is nowhere near what it was in 2011 or it's full on capabilities, but I think the point behind my post is, some have a need for both devices, but the iPad doesn't target everybody, as it doesn't need to. It sells itself.

Why does the laptop have to be replaced anyways? Let the laptop exist to do its thing and let the tablets exist to do their thing. Separate devices for different tasks is perfectly fine, IMO. Why does one have to try and replace the other? Let tablets be the best tablets they can be without mucking them up by trying to make them something they aren't?

Most households and users probably can easily justify having a laptop or PC and tablets. Makes sense to me. :)

That's exactly right. An iPad is not a laptop. It's an iPad. If what you really want is a laptop, buy a laptop. I for one am glad an iPad isn't a laptop. I have never been a fan of laptops, but I LOVE that the iPad Pro has come along to take their place for me.

So you all guys pay for your music, movies,tv shows etc....interesting :)

I still prefer using my Macbook with the ease of the trackpad where i can do most of my workflow one handed and relaxed, i prefer to download my music and organise it with ease on my mac and then sync it to my iPhone Plus, i prefer to use the trackpad for an easy and accurate way of selecting, copying and pasting text, i prefer to lay on my bed with my macbook resting on my belly with hands off (and set the screen on many viewing angles) and not having to hold a screen with both hands over my head (too cumbersome and uncomfortable when i had my ipad pro 9,7) and for sure i prefer videos not AUTO play on full screen and have multiply Audio sources play simultaneously without auto pause and at last i enjoy opening my mac the next day and found all my Apps not having auto refreshed and everything has remained at the same spot i left it :p

"Why does a laptop need to be replaced?" I have a 2015 Mbp that I will eventually need to replace when it will no longer update. But I do not want to replace it because I have no use for a laptop with the input ports of Mac laptops after my 2015. And I have absolutely no use for a windows PC or the room for a Mac desktop. I use my iPad (currently 12.9" gen 2) for most of my daily usage. For the tasks that, for now, I am forced to use my mbp for, I am hoping that at its life end, I am able to totally use my ipad. Even today, I find my iPad much easier to use, for my technical ability, than my mbp. For example if I have any issues on my mbp, I am not always able to easily fix them and i want nothing to do with terminal commands. But on the ipad, I can figure out how to fix my technical issues/glitches. Another easier task on the ipad, I have been using Affinity Photo on my mbp since Nov 2015, as a beginner have struggled at times. I have had Affinity Photo for iPad about 2 weeks now and find it soooo much easier than the Mac version. I am looking forward to ipad's future and by my 2015 mbp's life end, I will have gotten my money's worth there but wont replace, I gooe!

I think there are lots of people that don't need a laptop because their mobile computing needs are basic and routine. Maybe they only do light productivity work and simple content creation while on-the-go. An iPad is a great solution for these types of tasks, and the base models (e.g. iPad 2017 ~$300) are very affordable compared to a MacBook.

Perhaps, these individuals have a company provided computer for serious enterprise applications, or they have a family desktop computer at home for more complex tasks. Whatever the case, iOS 11 plus improved iPad hardware have made it possible for them to ditch their laptop. I can see that possibility.

Yeah... it helps people to justify spending money on ipads/pencils etc when they already have macbooks/imac's.

Kinda like how you just wrote a paragraph justifying how you prefer your MacBook. Thanks for sharing how you like to watch movies in bed on your MacBook with no auto audio pause/start. Riveting stuff.

I can certainly pause, resume and alter the Audio on any film i play on any device, be it iPad or a rMBP.

To be fair, you can pause audio on a MacBook.

I was referring to the auto pause/start audio in iOS that DJTaurus was complaining about.

Let’s discuss about this when Apple adds mouse support to iPad.

I will put it this way: if an iPad can successfully replace your Macbook Pro, then you didnt need a Macbook Pro to begin with.

iPads can only become laptop replacements if your actual use of laptop remains on the casual side (email, browsing, YouTube, skype, writing docs, etc). If you actually demand more beef from your laptop (Photoshop, video editing, programming, accountancy-level excels, etc), then there is NO WAY an iPad can possibly replace your laptop.

How many here who have a 10.5 use only this? or do you use a laptop along with this on a daily basics?

I have a MacBook Pro and an older iMac, but since I upgraded to my iPad Pro 10.5 last month I am using that more and more for daily stuff. Especially with the Smart Keyboard, pencil and Documents and FileBrowser. Actually, I don’t know whether I could live without my iPad now.

I cannot use my iPad as a plex server. I cannot use my iPad for proper video editing. I cannot rip and import music from a cd to my iPad. So unless it can do those things, it will not be a laptop replacement for me. That said, I do love my iPad and it's a great travel companion. I just wouldn't use it as my main device, even with ios 11.
