This thread isn't about the obvious differences about Android and iOS. It's about the little things that make an experience for better or worst. Please keep that(little things) in mind before criticizing me about my point of view. And feel free to correct any facts I got wrong.

First lets start with the home screen (Icons)................

I'm the type who likes to separate my icons into folders. With Android, the icons on the home screen are basically widget shortcuts of the app drawer. I like this cause it allows me to do something I could never do on iOS, and that is putting the same app icon into more than one folder.

For example: I place the Youtube app under a folder I named "streaming" and under a folder I named "Video". Pandora would also be placed in the "streaming" folder and also the "Music" folder. You get the point. This makes it extremely easy for me to instantly locate an app as sometimes I might think of any app as being in more than one of the folder categories I've created.

Tap Status Bar to scroll to top ............

Not sure if Apple just legally owns this feature or if Android's framework just makes it difficult. Anyhow, It's something that I will always miss about the iPhone and what I still love about using my iPad.

I'll give Samsung slight credit for trying to implement it into TouchWiz on the GS3, but it sucks and only works on a few default apps like contacts and email. Plus you have to tap the top of the phone itself, not the screen.

Wireless Networks .............

For work and socially being on the move, I connect to wifi networks frequently. Problem with iOS is you can't view, change settings, or forget any SSID unless it's in range. Besides my slight OCD of forgetting a long list of unused networks, I've also come across other reasons I needed to do so. Like when one of my work networks uses a temp pin/token or when I come across some default router SSIDs. I usually forget default SSIDs whether it was secure or open right after use, cause I always run into spots with the same default SSIDs and will constantly get enter passcode popups, or auto connect to terrible non secured service that can cause me to miss an important email, skype message, etc.

The easy solution would be to turn wifi off when not in use, but there are places I go on a regular basis that I like my phone to be wifi connected to without me thinking about it. My home being the number one place. :)

With iOS you need to reset ALL network settings to achieve forgetting networks that are not in range. :(

T9 dialing ............

Why doesn't iOS have this? It's faster than searching contacts. Some oldies are still very productive.

Calendar Events ..........

I wish iOS calendar could have more robust settings when adding an event. The time and alert increments are sometimes too spread out for my taste. Also, I would like the option of more event alerts for a single event. I'm a "press snooze" kind of person and the more reminders before an event the better. One other thing missing is adding images to an event. It's sometimes much more simpler than typing in some notes vs taking a picture of a document or directions.

Email ...........

I enjoy the stock email app on both iOS and Android(Email app not Google Mail app). The iOS email app is without question the most visually pleasing. What I like about the Android email app is the ability to delete all from inbox. I also like the dated dividers with the date and day name that you can hide or cascade vs on iOS which just has an date stamp(without day name) on the headers.

On iOS6 you can finally add picture from within the app, but I'm disappointed that you can't change style of font while composing. On Android you can do all of that.

Email notifications on iOS has always been more cleaner when using multiple accounts. The headers on the notification bar is more legible, while on Android it seems more cramped together. The last two JB updates have improved this slightly but still have progress to make. Also, if I'm going to see multiple email icons on the status bar, at least make them differ colors according to account.

There's seriously no way to delete multiple emails in iOS mail? What the heck? Please don't tell me that's true.

I just tried it. Yes you can. You go to edit then select your emails then long press on "archive". It'll give you the option to delete or archive.

Phew. That is a feature I use a lot when I was on an android.

I think he means "delete all" as in, in one go.

Press delete all button.
"Are you sure you want to delete all?"
Yes.
Done.

+1 for T9 dialling - wish the iPhone had this.

Depending on the inbox you're in, you can do that. I forget which ones let you do it.

I've got an iCloud and Gmail account (Exchange) set up and neither the combined inbox, VIP inbox or any of the individual inboxes have a delete all feature. You can tap 'edit' and individually select e-mails and then multi-delete, but none have a single 'delete all' button.

The world's most advanced operating system :(

And it really sucks I don't get push email anymore because I activated my iPhone after Jan 30th. Did Google ever say why they removed this feature? is it because of the ongoing "war" between them and Apple?

http://www.theverge.com/2012/12/14/...-sync-exchange-support-for-gmail-calendar-and

"Setting up an iPhone or other non-Android smartphone to sync with Gmail's services just got a little more difficult. Google is dropping consumer support for the Exchange ActiveSync protocol soon as a part of a "Winter Cleaning," the company has announced. As a replacement, Google is recommending CalDAV for calendar, CardDAV for contacts, and IMAP for email — though obviously iPhone owners will also likely use the new Gmail app for that. The move isn't entirely unexpected, Google has been updating its help pages to deprecate Exchange ActiveSync recently, leading us to speculate that it would be dropping support."

The only thing they'll achieve is that people will migrate to hotmail/outlook, iCloud or whatever alternatives are available for their platform.

My smartphone is the main place where I get my e-mail. If I can't get Push email from Google I'll go elsewhere for it.

What's IMAP? Does it push? And how do I set it up? :(

IMAP is a protocol that allows mail to stay on the server even after it's been downloaded. With POP3 once you download an e-mail it's gone from the server, so you can only use one client. With IMAP, you could check your e-mail on your desktop and then still check it on your smartphone too.

Push is a completely separate feature and IMAP doesn't push by default. You'd have to use the Gmail app if you want push.

Another option is to set up a free iCloud e-mail address (if you don't already have one) and set it up so all of your Gmails are automatically forwarded to your iCloud address. iCloud mail DOES push, so you would effectively still get your mail almost instantly :)

I'll try to live with 15 minute fetch. Hope that doesn't kill batts...

Either way, I can tell Mail likely isn't going to work out on the iPhone for me:

The mail issue may be a deal breaker. I can already tell this is not going to work out...

Lack of push, lack of ability to attach files, lack of entire inbox and labels loaded right away, no indicator of which email is from which account...

Navigating through the menus suck too. If I want to see Sent mail, I have to navigate out of All Mail then navigate back into that specific email account and find it. Ditto if I want see any other Labeled emails. Then if I wanna go back to All Mail, got to navigate back out and in again.

The Mail app is so limited.

Once again, just laborious to accomplish what should be incredibly basic tasks. I thought Apple is trying to get into the Corporate side of things? How can you not allow attachments of files, spreadsheets, PDFs, etc?

I have plenty of time before the One or S4 arrive, so I'm going to try to get used to it and make it work, but this may be the nail in the coffin.

PS. Gmail app as a solution sort of sucks. It's a lot slower, clunkier, and still doesn't allow attachments beyond pictures.

I thought this as well but apparently it's not the case and push actually uses less as it's not having to connect/disconnect all the time

Push maintains a constant connection and has to send data every so often to let the server know the connection is still alive.

Lots of people (including myself) have found that 15 minute fetch can increase battery life substantially (up to 25%). That said, I still use push because battery life is good enough.

Either way, I can tell Mail likely isn't going to work out on the iPhone for me:

What about auto-forwarding to an iCloud account? You can still use your Gmail account to reply to messages received through your iCloud account.

.

Do you still get this battery life increase if you have other apps that rely on push (WhatsApp the Facebook, yahoo mail app etc)?
Or does having just one app 'pushing' negate any benefit of making others fetch?

Even with others on yeah. This leads me to believe that maybe e-mail push isn't handled like other push notifications. Maybe the device maintains a connection to the e-mail server rather than the Apple push notification server?

Unless it's simply because I get more e-mails pushed than any other kind of notification.

Camera
There is no timer or burst mode for the default camera. Even Camera+ app has those features.

FaceTime
Can't make group calls.

Notes
Cant attach photos, attachments; can't use rich text format; no folders or good way to organize it.

Maps
Night time mode or automatic dimming of screen. No transit mode or offline maps.

Photos
Can't Photo Stream videos, albums need to be redone (mostly on the iPhone).

Safari
Needs single search bar, top sites menu, better way to organize bookmarks

Somethings Android has that iOS could use.

Oh, I think it's in Trash folder then. I know for sure there's a Delete all button somewhere.

What about auto-forwarding to an iCloud account? You can still use your Gmail account to reply to messages received through your iCloud account.

What about the gmail app? That supports push.

I'm going to first see if I can live with 15 minute pulling. If not, I'll do that. It seems like a poor workaround, though. Because if I read my email on Gmail on my Macbook or iMac, the mail will still be on my phone as unread.

----------

What happened to your N4?

Call quality issues.

In short:

I really tried to make the N4 work. It wasn't just an issue at beginning of calls. It was the entire call that had sound quality issues. The other person could barely hear me. I was extremely choppy (especially when in speaker mode).

I have had zero call quality issues with the iPh5. In fact, the other party says I'm crystal clear.

I really wanted to keep the Nexus 4. Google sent me two RMAs. They, themselves, heard the choppiness right away (for all three devices) when I called in. Just unacceptable.

I later discovered at the Tmobile store that they've had a handful of people returning/exchanging their N4s for the same exact issue. My uncle, who got a Nexus 4 per my recommendation also has trouble with calls and is subsequently also exchanging. He's still waiting for his RMA last I checked.

I love stock Android, but no thanks.

So just read it using iCloud instead. ;)

For every problem there is a solution or workaround!
