So how did the class answer the question ?

Well like I said. It doesn't bother me. Just because I made a thread about it. I simply wanted other peoples opinions. And I wanted to be able to give an answer. most of the class said that the Macintosh is a toy theory is a myth from the old days when a PC still ran DOS and not Windows. So because the Mac was easier to use... it was easier for any old person to "toy" around with. But now that both PC and Mac use a GUI... aren't they both "toys?" at one point? Besides, with Windows having most of the games... toy seems like the wrong thing for a PC user to call a Macintosh. I prefer tool. I dunno, when I was little. I had barbies and stuffed teddy bears. Those were toys. I never would call a machine that I do art work on and other "work" a toy. A tool yes =D

Guess I kinda answered my own question here. But, the class said it was a myth from the old days. I was curious as to why everyone else thought some people call the Mac a toy. It doesn't bother me... but since it was asked in class I became curious.

EDIT: those links are interesting. I wonder how that PC kid would answer to those =D gigglez

ЧИКАГО!
Thank you one and all.
I love this thread.

So it isn't just me getting all the abuse from the Mac Haters out there.

"I'd rather play and get results than toil for the same outcome" :D Can I use it?

"It's pretty, it's too expensive for me and I'm going to to insult it" :D:D

"It's a Toy because you can't GAME on it!" Have I heard that one a lot or what? I don't care about shooting 30,000 people to death in stunningly graphic 3-D! My idea of "Gaming" is Zuma or maybe Solitare.

This Mac Pro is the best tool (not toy) I've had the pleasure of using. I'm still astounded at its speed and stability. And quietness.
And astoundingly great construction.

Maybe Windows causes computers to emit stupidity, envy and rudeness vibrations, causing hapless users to become twisted evil Mac Haters.
Other than some silly TV commercials (that gently poke fun at PC's weaknesses without targeting PC Users), Mac people don't generally abuse them for their choice of computer, so why so much hate?

Best to just ignore them. Anything you say will merely escalate their hostility and you can't have a rational argument with a crazy person.

How can you tell if they're crazy? Well, if they start a conversation by calling your computer a TOY, that's a pretty good clue.

Have Fun,
Keri

PC user: Macs are just toys, I can build a beast gaming machine for a lot less than a Mac.
Last time I checked, gaming pc's were just overpriced toys with too many lights and ugly case designs. And FYI, My 4 YEAR old PowerBook runs every game I have ever wanted to play.

That's your opinion. Another one might be....

Maybe Mac users emit so much stupidity and rudeness that it turns PC users into Mac Haters. Other than silly TV commercials that continual perpetuate untrue myths of Windows, Mac users also continue to call any PC user a drone, a Windoze user, spell Microsoft with an $ not an S and deride any PC as being trash. Frankly - I'm surprised there's as much restraint as there is.

The truth is in the middle. Lies, ********, insults from both sides. Neither is better. Neither is best. Both do a job. They do it differently.

FWIW - I'm trying to shift my vid-ed dept at work to Macs. Asked other colleagues if they wanted one. One was utterly adamant she didn't want a Mac.#1 Reason cited for that? Mac users. She can't stand them. I can see where she's coming from

I've been using PC's for 20 years. I've been building my own for about 15. I lurked in this place for two years thinking about geting a Mac. But guess what - I saw so much hatred and so many lies towards windows users, I made the assumption that the same level of lying was also being spoken about the benefits of a OS X and Mac's. Essentially - I didn't want 'in' to that level of bull.

Three mac laptops later - I was at least partially right. OS X and Mac's are nowhere near as better or different as the zealots in this place make out. They're not the messiah in hardware. They're just a bit different.

Last time I checked, gaming pc's were just overpriced toys.

My PC workstation at home is an i7 rig. <50% the price of a Mac Pro. It pushes 3DS Max and CS4 beautifully (a recent 3DS piece I did is here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7Sce-EHTRs ) , and will also play Left 4 Dead.

How, exactly, is that either overpriced, OR a toy?

This is the sort of crap that gives Mac users a bad name. See my previous post.

Someone perfectly happy with the Q6600 based workstation sees a Mac user calling their machine - which does everything they need quickly, cheaply and without hassle - a 'toy' and thinks "WTF? What sort of moron would say that?"

There is a big difference between a alienware and a regular Dell in price with the same specs, and that was what I was referring to. (Posted from a Dell Latitude E5500 with Windows XP and through a windows powered proxy server and a windows DNS server)

Some PC users are idiots, some Mac users are idiots. You just need to know where and when to retort and when to ignore them.

So Alienware put it in a shiny case with lights on, up the price, and suddenly it becomes a toy? If it's the same specs, it's the same 'tool'. In neither case is it a 'toy'

So under that rule - my UBMB is a toy.

Very pretty I am sure. Problem is, in an attempt to cram all the ports into a tiny piece of the machine, it's impossible to use a USB data stick and the DL-DVI adaptor at the same time (because the USB ports are too close together, and using the USB socket on the DL-DVI Adpator causes it's usually dreadfull reliability to fall through the floor to totally unusable)

Form over function.

My £300 Samsung netbook manages to have THREE USB ports, and yet is smaller.

Meanwhile - an Alienware PC may be the ugliest, shiniest, stupidest looking thing in history - but the function remains entirely unaltered from the Dell PC we're told it's the same as inside. So it's not a Toy.

I think that is the birth of that "toy" statement is when Apple had the bubble gum multi-color iMacs. Even the Powermacs looked like toys with the plastic blue shapes.

Macs and PCs can both be toys just as they can both be powerful computational machines.

It rather depends what you're using them for.

just get a 2 inch extension cable
Somehow Apple managed to not have that issue on my PB G4. http://s.dmmac.co.cc/p22 http://s.dmmac.co.cc/p58

I can see why people would say that. Macs are inherently easier to use than a PC, they look simpler (comparing a Macbook/Pro to a Dell or Sony laptop full of buttons and ports and things). And their graphical prowess is finally on the up, I mean the new 27" iMac has a fairly high end 4xxx series graphics card. Just a shame I could still build a much more powerful PC with a 5xxx graphics card for less than half the price.

But that's the case with any manufacturer worth their salt.

What does everyone else think? What makes the Mac a toy? Is it the cartoon looking icons?
Macs are not toys, but if you want to have fun...

1. Agree. "Yes, you are right. Macs are toys."

2. After a short pause, ask this. "I have a question for you?"

3. When he responds, ask him this: "Do you know what the difference between a man and a boy is?" (Note, feel free to substitute woman and girl, or whatever as the point is the same.)

4. When he responds with a no, then reply, "The price of their toys!" Be sure to give a big knowing smile.

Above all, don't worry what others say. Use what you want to use. :D

Why should I have to? Now my laptop bag has to have the laptop, the DVI-Adaptor, the VGA adaptor, the power supply AND a 2-inch USB extension lead?

Why not chuck just one more USB port on the other side. Samsung can do it with a £280 netbook.

And something other than a crappy unreliable mini display port.

It's form over function - Steve Jobs taking OCD, and applying it to the products he sells to the detriment of the end product. Apple are VERY guilty. And I've not even touched on the MBA.

Even before that, it needs a separate FW400 bus (or FW800 for that matter, but that might be a bit greedy).

They did with my PowerBook and the old MBP's

I know. I had one. And they've now taken it off. And swopped to a crap display socket. And now, for a 'pro' product, not even given separate audio sockets.

This is form over function.

Rendering modern Mac laptops, by cube's definition... toys.

Which is why I am hackintoshing instead of buying real macs. Apple is going downhill and the more iPhones they sell the worse they get. The MBA started it all. At least the 17 inch MBP has 3 ports. My PowerBook also has full sized dual link DVI. The only Mac I would buy (price aside) is the MBP 17 + Mac Mini Server.

Even before that, it needs a separate FW400 bus (or FW800 for that matter, but that might be a bit greedy).
They are on the same bus on my powerbook, but I have 2 ports

Hey, I rushed out to get an early 2009 UMBP on closeout even if a laptop was not in my plans because of the removal of ExpressCard and the switch to built-in battery.

They are on the same bus on my powerbook, but I have 2 ports

I don't care about 2 FW ports if they are on the same bus.

Even before that, it needs a separate FW400 bus (or FW800 for that matter, but that might be a bit greedy).

Thinking it a bit better, it should really be 1 FW800 and 1 FW400. EyeTV does not work with a FW800->FW400 cable or adapter (bus powered). I have to go through a FW400 hub or multi-interface peripheral that is switched on.

My guess is that since for PCs it's rather more complicated to do simple functions than on a mac, the mac is so simple that it's considered a toy.

Heck to open a typical program on a PC, you have to first go to start, All programs and then look for the program. Unless you have every single program on the desktop which just gives you a big mess. On a mac you can just simply open the program from the dock or a stack.

So yea since macs are so much fun I'd call it a toy :D

This is wrong. Any sane Windows user would put shortcuts on the quick-launch bar NEXT to the start button that would act in the same way as the Dock for launching apps.

Another person spreading outright lies about Windows.

The misinformed always call it toys. Just see what the stupid people call these things when they were first introduced to the public by Apple.

GUI
Mouse
iPod
iPhone

By the way, in Apple Store, the only computer you can play games on are in the kids section. ;)
