Edit: Ignore everything in this post. The last Mavericks-compatible version of the Dropbox app is 73.4.118, but it won't actually let you log in. Stupid, but I don't feel up to trying to fix it with code injection.

Does anyone know which version of the Atom text editor is the latest one to work with Mavericks? Seems like they switched to requiring 10.10 only sometime in the last 2 years. Wikipedia even still says it requires 10.9 as a minimum. Yet I can't seem to find a version which will work.

@Heindijs the last version that supported Mavericks I believe is v1.48.0, but when I try to use the one I downloaded from here, it crashes before it opens. The same goes for v1.47.0 from here. v1.43.0 from here opens but the window crashes for me. Please let me know if you have any luck finding a working version!

Yep, v.1.48 doesn't want to launch for me either.
I've tried both v1.42 and v.1.36 and both of them show me this

I'm guessing it has something to due with my GPU. I bet it relies on a newer version of OpenGL which my Radeon X1600 doesn't support (Garageband 10 also doesn't seem to launch for this reason).

I'll just keep going back versions to see what works. I'll keep you updated

EDIT: Hey! Success! Version 1.32.0 seems to work!

EDIT2:
Schermafbeelding 2021-12-21 om 22.58.16.png

seems like it does have some graphical glitches which a lot of hardware accelerated software has with these legacy drivers. Not unusable though as the editor itself seems to be fine.

@Heindijs hmm that is too bad. Thank you for trying out the other versions and for letting me know. I wonder if these issues were always present when they were released? Because I don't see how they can release so many versions with such a big glitch.

I think it would work fine on an officially supported GPU with Mavericks. Keep in mind that mine has been patched by Parrotgeek

Just added the amazing Pico-8 'fantasy console' to the list. There's no info on what it requires as a minimum OS but the latest version runs perfectly on Mavericks. It could maybe run on Lion as well but I have no way of trying that right now.

I did notice a problem when trying to play a game from the 'splore' function. It said it could not connect to the BBS. Multicart games which require a download seem to not work either. Possibly a certificate or https issue?
All other functions work great though!

ta for that Hein..just been reading wiki about pico-8. Hadn't come across that before. Real minimal computing sort of stuff.

just noticed my firefox ESR 78.15.0 had its last update in oct 2021. The next one 91.0 requires OSX 10.
..just been looking at wot youve got in your dock.. is that golden circle one by Browser, Opera??

The golden circle is actually Outlook 2011! I‘ve never thought about it but it really does look similar to the Opera logo!

Also bevause Opera is just a reskin of Chrome nowadays, I’m pretty much running 91 already but as Chromium Legacy. So in that sense, I’m fully up-to-date :)

I would be extremely surprised if it wasn't fixed by either this or installing the ISRG root certificate.

It's not just PICO-8—most simple games that use OpenGL will work fine in Mavericks. Mavericks was the last time Apple updated OpenGL, which is to say it has the same OpenGL capabilities as even macOS Monterrey. This is quite bad for Monterrey, but good for us!

I've played Celeste, Dicey Dungeons, Baba is You... I'd say that anything 2D is more likely to work than not! Even for 3D, I've yet to come across a Unity game which doesn't at least start once I add my dumb patch, although some do have graphical glitches.

Ah, that’s Aperture. It’s basically a professional version of iPhoto. Really cool software!

I wil definitely be trying out your fix, thanks!
As for games, a lot of more modern OpenGL games I’ve tried seem to launch just fine on Mvericks. However since my iMac used NexPostFacto to run Mavericks and its graphics card having a way older OpenGL standard than what Mavericks really requires, some games just steaight up crash or show a garbled image. It’s really hit or miss.

One oddity I noticed is that Terraria 1.4 launches in Mavericks just fine but all the tiles are garbled, but when launching it in a Windows bootcamp partition it looks just fine. Maybe the Windows version relies on DirectX instead of OpenGL or something.

But that’s part the fun in pushing these old machines in my opinoon!

added Kindle 1.23.1. I tried earlier ones listed in filehorse as working for osx 10.9 but they didn't..so worked backwards to 1.23.1. Please correct me if you have found this to be incorrect.

Ta Hein re aperture ..might be a bit of overkill for me..but good to know its there as an option.

Found the latest version 3.03 july 2022 of Seashore on the app store works on 10.9. Theres an support fee of $9 (which is not bad considering wot one is getting), that removes a banner that takes up screen space. Id be ok with that but I found somethings weren't working that well (yep - could be just me)..so went back to v2.5.10

Hello everyone,
After a bit of work, I've gotten the native Discord client running again on 10.9! Support for 10.9 was officially removed circa 2019, but the client still works properly after patching out an update check. I've attached my patches and the required setup instructions to get it working.
DMG Contents:
- Download link for Discord 0.0.255 (officially supports 10.10+ but runs on 10.9)
- Patched info.plist (Reduces minimum requirement to 10.9)
- Patched app.asar (Removed update check)
While it probably isn't the best idea to run an outdated Electron app when Chromium-Legacy exists, some may prefer the "Native" app.
I've loosely tested the app (Sent a message, looked at channels, and tried the mic test), but things will probably be broken.
Oh, and I'd suggest disabling GPU Acceleration in Settings -> Advanced to speed up the app.

Oh cool! Can you share details on how you managed to patch app.asar? I tried to do that for Slack a long time ago (before Chromium Legacy existed) and couldn't get anything working.

It's interesting that GPU acceleration makes the app slower, even in a version of the Chromium engine that officially supported 10.9.

I used NPM's npx tool with the asar command to extract and repack the asar file. I had to do this on a modern machine as I could not get npm installed under 10.9.
Code:
npx asar extract app.asar /out/
npx asar pack /out/ app_patched.asar

Aren't there 3rd party discord clients available using reverse engineered api? I'm actually surprised outdated official client still works because apparently some people got banned using reverse engineered client that hit outdated endpoint (or didn't do challenge/response properly?). Just be careful...

Question. In the unsupported Macs section, it says that 2006 iMacs with ATI graphics will get acceleration. How about the late 2006 24" iMacs with Nvidia 7300 GT? Are they accelerated too?
