Hello and welcome to Yet Another Wiki, this time focusing on MorphOS.

What is MorphOS?

Simply put, MorphOS is another operating system for certain PowerMacs. You can check it out by going to their site at https://morphos-team.net/

Supported Hardware
From: https://morphos-team.net/hardware
NO NVidia GRAPHICS CARDS ARE ALLOWED. MAKE SURE YOUR MAC HAS A RAGE OR RADEON CARD.

  • All Mac mini G4 models
  • All iBook G4 models
  • All Cubes, so long as a Rage/Radeon card is installed instead of the NVidia one.
  • eMacs at 1.25 and 1.42 GHz clock speeds (no other eMacs are supported)
  • Certain PowerMac G4 models have full support:
    • Digital Audio PowerMacs
    • All Quicksilver PowerMacs
    • All Mirrored Drive Door PowerMacs
    • Other G4 models will not have sound fully supported
  • Certain PowerBook G4 models
    • Any model with a Radeon graphics card
  • Certain PowerMac G5 models
    • The original PM G5
    • Mid 2004 PowerMac G5 models
Not 100% supported hardware

Insert other models here with what you need to do to make MorphOS run or what won't work.

Why MorphOS?

Because it's just that friggin' FAST! It's faster than the stock Mac OS. It's faster than any kind of Linux I've ever seen for PowerPC.

But it costs money!!!

Yes it does. There's a "trial" version that throttles down after 30 minutes. To have full access to the speed of MorphOS, you will need to pay 79 EUR per system. It is per system, not a one-time fee, sadly.

But but but....THAT'S MONEY!!!

Again, yes. You had to PAY for each version of the Mac OS for your old PowerPC systems also. The best advice is from Cameron "FOR THE LAST TIME, STOP CALLING ME CAMSTER!!!" Kaiser--writing software is hard and time-consuming. Free projects mean you are getting exactly what you paid for (no offense to the awesome work he's done for TenFourFox) and will always be a black hole swirling around the drain until it's just plain gone.

Where can I download MorphOS?

The download link is here. Choose the live image.

Install Instructions for PowerMacs

Morph installs very easily. However, it is tricky if you want to dual boot with OS X. So check here for details on how to do it.

Applications for MorphOS

Most Applications you will need are already built-in. They are "reasonable substitutes" for commercial applications. Please use this template: Commercial App or App Type -- MorphOS App. If it isn't there already, head over to https://www.morphos-storage.net/ and find the app you need there.

Finder -- Ambient
iTunes -- Reggae
Safari -- Wayfarer
Mail -- Iris
Photoshop/GIMP -- Grafx2

The only thing I have a problem with is the “per system” licensing model..... what if someone has an identical Mac to the one that failed? They’d either have to buy (MorphOS) again or if they can help transfer the license over, do that. That’s why I like MacOS X/Classic MacOS.... you can just transfer the drive to the identical system that works and your golden.

From what I can gather, the PCIE G5s shipped with an Nvidia video card, which is why they're not fully supported. From what I can dig up, if you can get a Radeon working under the Mac OS, you should be able to use MorphOS on it.

My most used applications are:
MPlayer - Audio / Video player
DAPlayer - Audio player capable of many formats
Wayfarer - 2020 webkit based web browser (even plays youtube natively)
Iris - 2020 webkit based email client
WookieChat - IRC client similar to xchat/hexchat
Grafx2 - Image manipulation / paint program (similar to gimp and photoshop)
RNORadio - Skinnable audio player with streaming support
Calimero, MicroExcel, and EvenMore - for lightweight office stuff
MCAmiga - Midnight Commander like file manager
All can be found on morphos-storage.net

Compared to Mac OS X/OS 9, what is video performance like?

Never used os9 much, only unofficial macmini release (which i hated as the mouse always froze and no internal sound or working wifi), but video performance compared to OSX... much better. I can play 720p videos without the mini breaking a sweat. In browser youtube playback at 480p averages only 33% cpu.

Cheers

WTF? Did these people write an entire OS from scratch? Their website has lots of words but very few details.

It can't be Linux because it's not GPL. BSD-based maybe? Did they make a full webkit port?

Yes. The project´s original goal was to create a new operating system which allowed to transparently run legacy applications originally written for Commodore's Ax00 range of computers on modern hardware. It's basically an AmigaOS clone done right.

As for 2020 webkit.. It was ported. https://wayfarer.icu/

I am very unfamiliar with this but AFAIK all from scratch, Wikipedia confirms this pretty much. It's like HaikuOS in a way but even more impressive IMO if it's playing 480p YouTube properly even on PPC.

OS 9 eats MPEG-4 for breakfast. H.264, not quite at such a high bitrate as plain old MPEG-4 on OS 9, still plays very well on OS X. I totally understand the issues you've had with OS 9 on the mini. I have external surround sound speakers connected to the Mac mini G4 via headphone jack, as well as an ethernet to WiFi adapter since there's no AirPort card. Plain old headphones still play at a respectable (yet unmodifiable, unlike the surround sound system) volume for me at least with my main Sony earbuds (On a side note I will never downgrade to bluetooth headphones).

That mouse issue however, I'm not sure if it will ever truly be fixed. The v9 of the Mac mini OS 9 ISO was supposed to fix it but it just happens less often for me at least. Still my best OS 9 machine, though one day I dream of owning a dual G4 Power Mac.

I know I'll get slapped silly for saying this but... If MorphOS is that fast on PPC hardware, that AMD64 port they have in the works must run at warp speed. Really looking forward to seeing that.

I'm concerned once that port comes out they'll drop PowerPC support...not that I run MorphOS, but that would seem logical. There are a lot more AMD64 computers in the world then PowerPC's, and let's face it our Powermacs aren't getting any younger.

How about browsing Youtube? Most videos show a fully buffered video playing but the only video I've seen of someone trying to browse Youtube isn't very impressive at all.
The desktop site struggles a bit on the G4, but using the built in iPhone UA it loads and starts playing a hair faster than tenfivetube. Once I get unpacked and set up I'll do a quick video. Currently can't find my stand to mount the phone to desk to make a video. It's somewhere in a pile of boxes I haven't dug through yet.
