I just (pre-)ordered the base 27" on Amazon. I did it to save on sales tax, plus I have Prime so I got $4 overnight shipping, but I would have gotten the trackpad instead of the mouse had I ordered from Apple directly since I already have a Magic Mouse.

I tend to prefer getting the base model of whatever mac I'm getting because I don't need insane performance, and I find the resale value to be better, which gives me the excuse of upgrading sooner. :)

Wanted SSD, but wanted to wait even less.

None the less, ordered a:

27" 3.4 I7
2 TB Drive
12 GB Ram (Ordered 8 from NewEgg)
ATI 6970M 2GB

Up in the air what to do about SSD, might just wait on the Thunderbolt External.

I don't get the impatience. Goes all out on the computer but decides not to address the bottleneck in the system.

The only way I would get one now is if I got a great deal like my 2011 17-Inch MacBook Pro:

$2,025 for the base model from a seller on eBay, New/Sealed.

Cost w/ Apple Education discount: $2,448.44
Cost normally: $2,661.44

So you see, saved well over $400, depending on education discount. I came from an HP Envy 17, and wanted to start on the Mac and eventually convert myself over, and I did not see myself spending more than $2,000 on a laptop, so with a little bargaining and convincing, I got it for the price I did, which I think is a fair price anyway for such a laptop.

I would want the highest-end iMac 27-Inch, only change the CPU to the i7 3.4GHz, then upgrade the rest myself. I could handle $1,700-$1,900 for that, but not $2,300+ (education discount). I know you pay a premium for Apple products, but not a 30-50% increase from a comparable PC. I'll admit, I bought the MacBook since it was a great deal, and the hardware is finally catching up with the prices, you're paying *almost* what you should. I can understand a 10-20% increase from a comparable PC, but not much more.

I like the iMac, I am considering replacing my i7 desktop with one, only if I can get a deal on it.

There's a bunch of ram on newegg. Starting at $83 for 8gb. Just go to memory and look under laptop.

As far as changing the ram, it's 3 screws on the bottom panel. Then you plug the ram in. Then put the panel back. Done. Couldn't take you more than 5 minutes tops.

thank you I don't see 16GB kits therre but I did have a question on the 8GB kits. I know it has to be laptop and DDR3 1333

What is the difference between:

DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) and DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600

You can use either. Just read the user reviews to see what people are saying about it.

I'm DEFINITELY getting my first Mac OS X machine, the 2011 iMac!!!

I'm just waiting to save for it. I'll have it by the summer. Also, that may benefit so I can get the back to school discount/promo.

I plan on getting the

iMac 27"

• 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 with 6MB on-chip shared L3 cache
• 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM 2x4GB or 4x2GB
OR
• 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM 4x4GB
• 1TB Serial ATA Drive (7200RPM) + 256GB Solid State Drive
• AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 2GB GDDR5 SDRAM memory

Just realized since I can get the memory elsewhere I can also consider 12GB

• 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM 2x4GB
OR
• 12GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM 4x2GB+4x1 buting only a 8MB kit that has 4x2
OR
• 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM 4x4GB

Probably...

The new iMac's look so spiffy. I'm thinking of purchasing one to replace my old iMac G5 who's running somewhat slow and lags a bit now, for my mom to use..Especially when she wanted to read news online and what not. Maybe this year's black Friday.... *drools*

Ordered BTO

i7 3.4ghz
1tb drive
2 gb 6970
and all the other basic stuff.

Can't wait....Well I can...but i dont wanna...But I have to....Waahaa

Honestly I am fine. Patience is a virtue.

Since the iPad has pretty much taken the MBP's place in my daily on the go usage I was thinking about selling my MBP and getting a 2011 iMac. Ughhh.... the screens are so pretty..... But you never know when you might need the portability of a laptop.

Decisions.... decisions....

Trying to decide on the exact same thing, let me know how you go with your decision!

Bought the highest end 15inch MBP 2.2 Quad-Core i7 instead because of the cheap SSD upgrade. It's also a portable monster this thing.

An SSD upgrade of $500 for the iMac is just too damn expensive. If it was maybe a $250 upgrade i would have certainly gone for the new iMacs

I'm considering the base 21.5" model. It would be a great replacement for my 4 year old desktop Windows PC.

Problem is, we only have Apple Premium Reseller in my country, no Apple Store whatsoever.

So as bad as I want a BTO iMac with i7 and 2Gb VRAM, i just can't get into it. The reseller won't have them as stock. An i7 iMac maybe, but not with 2Gb VRAM

It's kinda suck for Apple to sell them as BTO. They should just release them into retailers. Make them 6 or 7 types, but not as BTO. Price ranged between $1200 until $2500 or so

That sure make everyone happy

This is the plan. Text in bold are custom upgrades

27-inch 2011 iMac
3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
1TB Serial ATA Drive
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
Magic Trackpad
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (Int'l English) & User’s Guide (English)

Will upgrade to 16GB if I can sell the 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB

I'm in. Just don't know if I will get it in the next few days at the Apple store, wait for a $100ish discount from an online retailer or wait until Lion comes out.
