You really can't be talking about the ATV4, right? (buggy POS as far as I'm concerned). You really couldn't call it a PC.
I think a lot of people have a similar use case to my own - mini serves up the media, but it's also the primary computer in the home. (MacBooks and iPads for other locations...and one remaining ATV3).
Can't surf on an ATV4. Can you do NFS mounts? (media's over on my Synology NAS)
Obviously, also do a lot of spreadsheets, word processing, etc, etc.

If people JUST want something to serve up their iTunes purchases, maybe that's the fit for them, but they're really missing out on just how much use you could get out of that massive display!! :D
Not to mention, um, torrents ;)

Yes, I am: if you are not going to use the device as a PC, the ATV is cheap, easy to use, and does the job.

But, of course, I do want to use the thing as a PC! And there, we've now got a wide range of great choices available, from Intel's NUCs (especially Skull Canyon), to new devices from HP, Lenovo, Gigabyte, all sorts of manufacturers.

Everybody except Apple, that is.

10 minutes about one last thing: we gave spec bumps to all Macbooks and iMacs and made them thinner, replaced all slots with USB-C, what is this Mini and Pro you speak about? You surely mean iPads? No? iPods? Phones? Ah, who cares. Music tiiiime!
Adele performs "Hello"
Very pregnant Janet Jackson performs "Again"
Both are removed from the stage by security for not being thin enough

I am NOT suggesting anything like this is going to happen, just that there are really more things they can talk about than Macs for two hours.

Truly hilarious! Thank you for the laughs. Music please, and better color gamut on my iPad Super Pro please. 33 gabillion is not nearly enough :)

I hope if Apple does update the Mini they at least give you all some flash or fusion for the base models.

Remember the iMac 1Tb Fusion drive was supplied with just 24Mb of SSD (down from the 128Mb from previous models) for the 2015 refresh. This is to cut down the headline price on certain models.

It's also a quirk of the fact that the Mac Mini remains a 2014 product so a 1Tb Fusion drive actually still has 128Mb SSD.

There will be no such luck for the 2016 Mac Mini if it persists with hard drives.

I think the 1Tb Fusion drive (with just 24Gb of SSD) could be a useful middle model with a larger 2Tb version with 128Gb SSD standard. The base model obviously would make do with just a simple hard drive.

So, we could see Apple using the 15w Kaby Lake cpu in all Mac Mini models, and reducing the 1Tb Fusion drive to something that fuses a 1Tb HD with just 24Gb of SSD (yes, we know it'll be probably speedy PCIe SSD, but 24Gb barely takes care of the OS, never mind apps and data).

If the new mac mini has ANY options with spinning hard drives, it will be a FAIL LOSER. This is 2016 and SSD prices are either dropping like flies or have already dropped. Fusion??? PULEAZE! Give it a rest. The spinner is dead.

Are you kidding? Apple's view of the Mac Mini is a pure entry-level Mac. Only the cheapest components, the weakest CPU / GPU will do. If they gave it anything more, it might cannibalize sales of the iMac.

Apple would need to completely reorient its view of its own product line before they ever make a performant Mini again.

Then again, the bike shop around the corner from here has entry-level bikes, but none of them look like this:

You still have a point though. Apple will do what they can to make life miserable for buyers of the mini. The iMac serves a purpose as an advertising banner in your home or office, in a way that a mini connected to a non-Apple display (the only kind these days) will never do.

You know as well as I do that Apple puts spinners in to gouge people for profits. That's Apple's motto.

I wish a 2TB SSD option will be there. Are there any afordable 2TB SSDs in the market? (PCIe)

So what if the new Mini just isn't coming - never - it is discontinued. Then the question is, do you buy a 2014 while they last? You might have to decide that pretty quicky to get the configuration you want. I would have to decide whether to get a 3ghz/16gb/256gb model while they lasted...

Who in healthy state of mind would pay top dollars for 2 years old tech, especially knowing how bad 2014 update was...

If they discontinue it, I guess we'll find out the answer to that question. ;) Or do you think they will just sit in the stores with nobody buying them? People said the same thing about the Thunderbolt Display. I had considered getting one however and kept checking after it was discontinued. They were all gone - both from Apple and third party stores within a couple months.

As to ATD i believe there were just few units available after being discontinued, noone was buying them and apple does not produce too many stock units... but, whoever bought that old crap after being discontinued must have been brain dead anyway:) (if bought for full price)

If the mini is discontinued (but, it's almost certainly coming, don't forget), and one wanted to continue using Apple computers, then the laptops would be the next best thing. For the entry-level, the MacBook Air (assuming it wasn't also discontinued) would be a good choice. For a more advanced machine, it would be the 13" MacBook Pro. That's what I'm using now, an early 2011 MacBook Pro in clamshell mode 95% of the time (for long-time readers of this thread, I apologize for mentioning this yet again). You have a screen that you may not want, but at least you don't have to look at it all the time. Or, you could bite the bullet and blow your savings on an iMac, which is a nice machine.

The answer is: No! If you want a top-quality SFF machine, they do exist. Take Intel's Skull Canyon: Top-of-the-line CPU, a GPU that both runs cool and can drive three monitors, a fully SSD-based storage mechanism (the device is actually designed around the use of SSDs), plenty of high-end I/O ports...

The Mini is at this point not only a collection of relatively low-end hardware, it's an archaic design for an SFF box. I would love to continue to run OS X on my desktop, but the hardware just doesn't cut it any more. :(

So what else do I buy? Not interested in switching to Windows or building a Hackintosh. An entry level Mac Pro is about twice the cost of a fully tricked out Mini. With an iMac, I would be paying for a screen that doesn't interest me.

I feel your pain. :) However, I've transitioned most of my work to Linux now, and am happy with the results. You can get a lot done with a modern Linux distribution...

then the laptops would be the next best thing.

I have a 2013 i7/8gb/512gb MacBook Air (the top configuration). The top of the line 2014 3ghz mini is only about 15% faster, not much difference. The big difference is the connectivity however. I tried to make the MBA suited for video by using an OWC Thunderbolt 2 dock. Sent it back after a day, I could not get it to work reliably and didn't want to waste any more time. Maybe these docks work better with the new laptops, but it sure didn't for me.

So there's just no way that I can have a big screen for the FCP timeline and a second screen for external video on my MBA. I could do it with a MBP, but that makes no sense because for everything else I love the MBA. I don't need another laptop. I guess I'd need to consider an iMac, but really don't want a 5k monitor that just consumes more resources to drive.

Funny that Apple has the "courage" to eliminate USB and Headphone jacks, but not eliminate 30 year old tech of spinners.
