The old MacBook Pro with CD drive hung around for years with no update, and now it is just gone. Did they "announce" that?

It's gone now? So they finally took the plunge and made the Mac Pro the saddest piece of abandonware in the whole Mac lineup...

Given that new MacBook Pros were announced it kinda goes without saying, I'd have thought.
Well, they didn't announce the cinema displays dead, we had to hear that from LG instead... Also maybe I remember incorrectly, but I cannot remember that they announced the end of the iPod classic? They discontinued the classic only after 5 years of not updating the last model... The same is true for the cinema displays, 4 and a half year...
What I want to say with this is that, while I don't wish for it, the mac mini could be discontinued already without we knowing it because they will only remove/announce something after 4-5 years of no updates...

Our machines will do less of their own thinking and rely more heavily on embedded technology all to support enhanced mobility and seamless access."

That's a very interesting observation, and -- to me -- a troubling one.

I don't use "the cloud" at all (other than to share a few pics, and for that I use onedrive.com).

I DON'T WANT to be forced into the cloud.
I LIKE having a "file system" to manage on my own, with folders, files, etc., stored where I want them to be stored.

If the MacOS "goes that way", then I'll be forced to go another.
Towards Linux, probably. I've played with Linux releases a little, and while no match for the MacOS, it's certainly better than Windows.
At my age, Windows is a mess, too much to try to re-learn and start all over.

Considering the entire http://www.apple.com/mac/ page doesn't even mention or show the Mini or Pro, I'd say it's looking rather grim.

I think this is a subtle hint from Apple about the future of the mini (and the Pro). It took some thought on their part to intentionally leave them out of the family picture. Is this their way of saying “If you want one, buy it now before it’s eliminated”?

Yeah I was have this conversation with my wife. My three mac minis scattered about the house. With access to two diskstations holding 10tb are more then I need for storage. But I have a six disk 24tb promise thunderbolt and 2 6tb two disk thunderbolt lacie units.
So I have more then 40tb in storage in my home. I have two 2.5inch 2tb hdds in different safety deposit boxes for backs off site. One bank in my state and one in New York. Finally a third back 6tb at my bro in law's house.

My need or desire for a large cloud service is none. Or close to none.

If nothing else, they're indicating that they aren't after any new interest in those product lines. The only reason you'd get one is because you already knew you about it.

In my mind, the only reason you'd want to steer people away from some of your products is because you're weening them off of them and onto other products (iMac, MBP). You would do this so that when the plug gets pulled, there are fewer people still relying on that product lineup (ie. people who might be vocally upset and resentful).

It's kind of like closing a cash lane at the supermarket... You still take those who are left in the line, but all the people who come up are directed to the other lanes.

Perhaps they need to quietly kill one rather than both then? Merge the two lines together. Could the iMac have a hand in this if it gets repositioned in the range when it finally does get a refresh?

Phil Schiller did say when the Mac Pro was unveiled that it would be good for 10 years. I think he also said that about the lightning port too when it replaced the old 30 pin connector so we have an earlier precedent to look at.

Poor Mac Mini...

When the 2014 Mac mini was released, it used pretty much the same chips as the 2013 MacBook Air.

If we get an update, it'll be until late 2017 and with the same chips as the 2016 13" MacBook Pro (so it'll be essentially 1.5 years old when it's released).

I think it's a great idea, which is precisely why I am confident Apple won't do it.

Funny thing is around here people will tell you a 3 year old computer is getting very old, "of course it will be slow and have problems!"... meanwhile the current Mini is 2 years old and the current Pro is over 3.

It seems as if Apple orders a ton of product and IF for some reason one year later they have and over supply of millions of cpu's they say, hey let's update the mac mini line. They use up their stockpile and strike a deal on the cheap for outdated processors to top up what they need.

I bet that's exactly what they do.

Do you think there will be a separate event in the next 3-6 months announcing desktop upgrades?

No, they didn't have an "event" the last time they updated the Mini, why would it be different this time? The mini isn't the kind of sexy product Apple brags about. If they update it at all (I have my doubts) I think it would be a "silent update" like 2014.

Now I can see them announcing a new Mac Pro at an event, it's their most powerful computer and they have made a "design statement" with it. I suppose another scenario could be discontinuing the Mini and replacing it with some new fashion statement desktop machine which they could announce along with a Pro update.

Yeah I meant the Mini, Mac Pro, iMac event

Was that an event solely to announce the Mini, or were other things announced at the same time?

This was the "It's been way too long" event:

https://www.macrumors.com/2014/10/16/october-2014-event-live/

They spent most of the time in the event showing off new iPads and new iMacs. The Mini announcement was squeezed in towards the end; they literally spent about two minutes on the announcement, and then never mentioned it again...

Haha, I guess that's why I thought it was a "silent update". :D Here's the timeline from the link you posted:
