His silence basically told me to move over to the Windows/Linux world.
He's not building suspense, he's letting us down without allowing the price to fall through the floor.
Weaseling isn't all that difficult to detect.
The problem is working out the exit strategy. I have to replace a number of machines over the next two years or so, between my son and wife. They have been using Macs for years, so I have to retrain them, and investigate the best child-safe options for windows. Or do I just pull the ole double switch-a-roo, and migrate them to linux?

My son will be wanting to play more and more games, so I'll likely have to have something with a little graphics meat on it's bones(aka - not anything Apple), but I'm not sure the state of gaming on linux. Ugh!!! If Apple could only get their heads out of their arses, I could easily justify keeping any gaming on the console, and having the computer as a solid work only machine. But Apple would rather drive me, my family, and all the extended family I advise, away from Apple, instead of providing compelling offerings.

But as I say in my sig VVVVVV

The state of gaming on Linux was truly awful... Until Valve threw their hat into the ring. Valve decided a few years back that they wanted to create their own gaming console. However, rather than go with a proprietary OS ala XBox or Sony's PS line, they went ahead and created SteamOS, a Linux distribution of their own (based on the Debian distribution).

To go along with this, they've made Linux support a top-level priority for their Source game engine. As such, pretty much all Source-based games now run natively on Linux. Lots of other titles have started to add Linux support as well, at least partially to gain access to SteamOS users. :)

At this point, there are now thousands of titles available for Linux, including many AAA ones. There are, of course, still plenty of games that are Windows-only; but almost half of my Steam library currently works on Linux. (I've even started to see a few titles only supporting Windows and Linux machines, and ignoring the Mac!)

Anyway, the current state of gaming on Linux is fairly strong. :)

About half of my games I have in Windows 10 run in my Linux partition. For instance my favorite DOOM only runs in Windows.
I have most of my games in Steam so I have checked out cross platform activation. So you can also go to Steams site and it will show you cross platform games according to OS. macOS has the least.

If your thinking of the kids and are in the US, Windows will probably be the preferred OS. At least that is what their using in Florida. Some of the private schools use Macs. Some of the Schools use Chromebooks.

This is all I want the new Mac Mini that is almost certainly coming to be:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/10966/zotac-mini-pcs-kaby-lake-ces-2017

If someone could tell me how to get macOS running flawlessly, I'd go for it!
There are not any Macs running with Kaby Lake yet and macOS does not support Nvidia 10XX Gpus so the chances of hacking are slim.

can some one make a POLL for us, to vote who will buy a mac mini if Apple will update it with the new technologies, like usb-c/tb3,kaby lake, 32 gb ram etc. Maybe if we are a lot of us who is willing to buy a new one, maybe Apple will see, like Macbook pro

I doubt the mini gets more than 16Gigs of RAM. I doubt it gets a quad core as well.

ok ok even with 16gb, my point was to see how many of us here are willing to buy a new refreshed mac mini, up to date with the internals and I/O
But i think Apple need to put one (if not both) of these: 32 gb Ram OR quad core

I have decided that I will not. My first Mac was a Mini a decade ago; I picked it up because I liked the idea of a desktop machine that (a) ran Unix, (b) ran popular commercial software, and (c) didn't have an integrated screen. :) The Mini provided all these things and had pretty decent hardware to boot.

But now, Linux has popular commercial software available. And I can pick up a desktop tower machine at much lower prices with much better hardware.

I'm going to keep using my existing Minis for as long as they keep working; but I really see no reason to buy Apple any more. If, perhaps, they come out with a decent expandable desktop tower, I might check it out. If they start licensing OS X on non-Apple hardware, that'd be another interesting factor. But just another new Mini? Nah, I'm done.

Whatever they release it will be better than my 2009 mac mini, so sadly I will buy any mac mini they release (assuming they release not only the base mac mini) even if it is an other crippled upgrade.

What if... we see an updated Mac Pro and Mac mini, which are very similar in design, just big and small and with the expected differences in specs? It would make the line-up nice and simple. The delay might be a combination of waiting for the right CPUs, more wide-spread USB-C/TB3 adoption, figuring out where to manufacture them (US doesn't seem to work out that well according to some rumors).

And what if... you can daisy chain them for increased performance? You can use external GPUs, so why not chain together a bunch of minis or Pros or a combination, and have an app on a single device use the CPU and GPU power from the others as well. I don't know if that's feasible with the TB3 throughput and all that, but it could be a solution for keeping the device itself simple (read: non-expendable) and still offer an Apple-supported solution to get more power out of it.

All this is what I hope for is coming in a couple of months. It's EXACTLY what we need in our design studio.

If not I will have to change my investment planning and start the process of migrating my whole design studio and staff to some other platform than Apple, after 22 years on Macs. And we wont go for iMacs or MacBooks, we did those mistakes once and newer again. iMacs sabotage the re-investmentcycle in a design studio because advances in screen technology and cpu technology is always out of sync. And MacBooks creates ergonomics problems and are prone to become stolen or damaged when staff bring them out of the office, and they also share the problem with screen and cpu technology advancing with different time cycles.

Our current lineup is all staff have a basic kit of 1 iPhone, 1 iPad, 1 Mac Mini (SSD only) with a color correct screen from NEC or Eizo.

In addition we have extra studio Mac Minis, iMacs and Mac Books that can be used by anyone who need extra capacity for rendering or for doing mobile work that cannot be done on an iPad. The MacBooks are hardly ever used and tend to spend most of their time as temporary scanning stations or printer servers because they have screens and are easy to set up anywhere there is some space available. The extra Mac Minis are popular and used most of the time and move around a lot between staff. The iMacs are never used because of inferior color-support so no one wants them and they only ever gets used as showreels and display stands in trade fairs.

We also have an old PowerMac G5DP as a server and it's really stable and can take a lot of HDs.

In a couple of months we really need to start upgrading the oldest Mac Minis (currently Apple don't sell any better than the ones we have) and we also want to transition to slanted touch screens in the near future for increased ergonomics moving away from the mouse as the primary input devise.

I hope someone from Apples marketing and development reads this and actually gets the message.

The fact that there are always rumors about iPhones and iPads and laptops, but NEVER a peep ever about the Mac mini or Mac Pro only points to one conclusion. These so called rumors and leaks are not leaks, they are carefully crafted teasers BY APPLE to keep customer interest peaked.

Apple doesn't want people drooling over the next Mac mini 8 months in advance.

The mini competes with all the other more expensive mac computers for the customer's dollar. The iPhone only competes against itself.

I would like to pick up an old used 2012 mini, but I'm waiting for the March refresh in hopes Apple will release a new line of minis. That would drive the prices down on all the older minis, and I could pick up one off eBay for less than the current asking price.

I've gotta say it: MacRumors usually picks up some sort of rumor months ahead of a refresh. So far, though, I've seen nothing. Apple simply isn't putting any effort into their desktop lineup right now; even if Cook decided to put more emphasis on it after the response he got from the recent MBP release, there hasn't been enough time for them to really prepare a new refresh/redesign of their desktops.

Another point to consider: the 2014 Mini refresh was such a letdown, it drove up price of used 2012 Minis. Another such refresh, and 2012 prices might just increase again...

22 years !! And i've been with them for 30. But of course... WE are the problem. It's our fault for needing 4k video capable computing. This is what the apologists think. WE ( who supported Apple when they were literally a niche ) hate Apple ! And we hate new tech. And we hate change. Yeah, that's why we supported them exclusively for DECADES !!! In the past, when Apple changed something... it was ALWAYS for the better. Usually "make your head explode" level of better. Now every change is "head scratching" for the worse. We rejoiced then, we complain now.

You got one thing exactly right. Tim Cook ( and the apologists ) DO NOT WANT us as customers. They want us to go the ( bleep ) away so Ive can make pretty toys that look like computers for the masses.

There were absolutely zero rumors/leaks about the 2014 MacMini prior to Phil sloughing it off at the end of an iMac presentation.

I don't expect there to be any leaks this time around either. One day it will just drop. Hopefully to our delightful surprise. But I'm not betting on it.

Well, actually, MacRumors did manage to pick up some rumors ahead of the 2014 refresh. One of them was several months ahead of the event:

https://www.macrumors.com/2014/07/29/support-page-references-unreleased-mac-mini/

Another, more solid one, just weeks ahead:

https://www.macrumors.com/2014/09/25/mac-mini-october-update/

So yeah, you can pretty much depend on MacRumors to come up with something before most any Mac update. :)

EDIT: Also, I think it was inserted into an iPad event, not an iMac event...

I'm starting the rumor that an un-named source is claiming that the new mac mini will be using a Ryzen CPU, which explains why we have not yet seen the new (post-2014) mac mini. :)

*This source is unimpeachable because he does not have an impeachable post.

Honestly the longer I wait this is the only conclusion I can come to other than they are discontinuing the mini. Imagine a Quad Core with 8 threads Ryzen APU, that would be potent Mac Mini.
