I have fingers and toes crossed. I'm hoping to be impressed, but I've found the events a little hit or miss in the last 3 or 4 years. I guess the digital events allow for more events, but the content has felt a little flat. I enjoyed the MacBook Pro one, but I was disappointed the mini didn't appear then. Time will tell.
You’re doing it all wrong. Watching an Apple event and hoping to be impressed is a sure-fire way to be disappointed. You need to watch it with low expectations and then you might be pleasantly surprised. ;-)

This comment almost cost me my laptop in a coffee spray 🤣. I've realised in the last few years I have a very misbalanced optimist/pessimist tendency, so you've nailed that faster than a lot of therapists. Blind optimism before event (life events, not apple), depression when I'd clearly ignored a load of other possible/likely outcomes. I could have saved a lot of money talking to you....

I would really like to see the new Mini offer full support for a dual-monitor setup (4K, USB-C). That is literally the only reason why I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

You can make that work with the existing M1 apparently, however that's using a weird dongle for HDMI->USB c. If you only have USB c inputs then this is a viable option. I'd be interested to see how much further the graphics can go after pushing that many pixels.

If the Mini does get upgraded to the M1 Pro you will certainly have that ability and it is how the MBPs are setup and the Pro has more display controllers. It is unclear if Apple intends to market the base M-series (M1/2) to support multiple external thunderbolt monitors or will keep the current limit due to market segmentation.

Just two weeks folks!
Tick tick, tick tock…
I try to stay occupied and not think too much on it. Times seems to go slower when a certain time can’t arrive soon enough.
Then I try not to expect that the new Mac Mini Pro will be available in stores immediately after the keynote either. Patience, but it WILL soon come 😁

The Mac mini is seeing decent price drops on several resellers websites. As Apple themselves rarely ever discounts their products on their website, this could be a possible sign that apple is trying to clear out final inventory before the March event.

I've seen Best Buy Canada heavily discount iPads a couple of weeks before an event, only to raise the prices back up later, presumably because no new replacement model was released at the event.

That is how I picked up an iPad Air 2 for $100 off in 2015. (It came out in 2014.)

iPad mini and iPad Pro were announced at that fall 2015 event, and they briefly stopped making the Air for a few years too after the 2 was released. So there’s still a possible correlation there.

Of course I’m just grasping at straws trying to confirm my assumption the mini is coming in two weeks hah!

Yes at the very least I am expecting major delays in shipping for the BTO options. I may just be refreshing the store page right after the event to lock in my BTO mini.

Yeah, some would argue the 9.7" iPad Pro was the replacement for my iPad Air 2. However, that didn't come out until 2016. The iPad Pro released at the fall 2015 event was a 12.9" model.

Anyhow, I was just suggesting that (aside from the iPhones), the big retailers don't know what is being released until it's released, but they do sometimes try to anticipate the releases with educated guesses. And if they are overstocked on a potential end-of-life model, that's when they have the big sales.

To put it another way, even if a Mac mini is released next month, that doesn't mean the big retailers knew about it in advance. It likely would just mean they guessed correctly, based on the same rumours we read.

EDIT:

I will also point out that the iPad Air 2 wasn't discontinued until 2017 actually.

My 3 month old Intel NUC has what sounds like a dying fan. Going through the warranty process with Intel now and heavily considering a switch to Mac, but holding off until March 8.

Really hoping for a redesigned M2 entry level Mac Mini. Would prefer if it were fanless (base model anyway).

Why fanless? There is plenty of room for a fan, and it clearly improves performance. I have never heard the fan on my M1 Mini, even when editing 4K video. A fanless Mini makes no sense unless they shrink it to the size of an Apple TV.

There's very little reason for it to be fanless, and given Apple's general tendency towards low RPM, a mini may not sound like it has a fan anyway. Passively cooled machines are great for iPads and MacBook Airs, but it's always good to have a fan to assist. It also stops dust cooking onto the heatsink which will shorted the machines life

Did you read my post? I bought an Intel mini PC only 3 months ago and the fan is dying. Fanless means one less point of failure for the unit.

The performance difference between the 8+8 Air (no fan) and the 8+8 Mini doesn’t seem that big. I’d be happy to give up the tiny performance boost.

The best way is to do what they have done with MacBooks Pro 14"-16": the active cooling is there but the fan only start if needed.

Fans die. Fact of life. In most cases, they are amazingly long lived. Do you think server farms try to eliminate fans? My mini fan is the best I have never heard.

I imagine with a dead fan the computer might throttle to 40% of spec. They have been throttling due to internal temperature since at least 2009.

I don’t think they’re off, I think they’re at a very low RPM. However, with the blade design you won’t hear them.
Would the fans of fans, and the foes of fans, all be fans of a fan you can turn off?
As a fan fan, I’m pretty happy if I can’t hear them. However I would always choose more whir over leaving performance on the table. A well designed cooler shouldn’t have to compromise that though for a sub 100w processor
