Guess I'm the outlier, my 2018 i7/64gb/2tb Mini is still working great with Monterey, will probably wait until they stop security updates next year to upgrade. I use Windows 10 in a 32gb Parallels VM heavily for GIS software (to make maps) and would hate to give up the MacOS and Windows integration on the same computer.

I got my 2018 Mini in 2020 and planned to use it for 5 years. At this time, I see no reason not to stick with that plan - and, frankly, I can't afford to upgrade any more often than that.
Is it possible to go back to Monterey after upgrading to Ventura? Monterey was super solid and fast.

Sorry, Apple has locked things down so tightly now, I'm not sure. Used to be easy, if you made a Carbon Copy bootable clone of the old operating system before upgrading then you could easily revert by just cloning it back to your startup drive.

I believe that has all changed now and (at least for Carbon Copy) they don't recommend making bootable clones. But if you have a Monterey installer, seems like you could erase your internal disk and just re-install that, then restore your user files from a Carbon Copy or Time Machine backup.

My 16/512 m1 Mini arrived with Big Sur. When Monterey was released I installed it on an external SSD to check it out. I didn't see any reason to install it on the Mini's internal SSD.

Then some unrelated glitches showed up on the Mini and Apple's suggestion was to re-install macOS. And I discovered that my Mini's firmware had been updated and it could never again run Big Sur. Apple told me there was no remedy except to run Monterey.

You can download the IPSW that you want and DFU restore it. This will restore matched firmware and OS versions:

Instead of choosing "Restore" in Apple Configurator, once the Mac is sucessfully recognized in DFU mode, drag and drop the IPSW file onto the DFU device in the main Configurator window.

Thanks for the tip
that info might come in handy if I decide to revert to Monterey.

there is a another process were one deletes the drive, then reboots off the thumb drive.
and i can always use a Time Machine on an external drive then reinstall that.

seems to me Monterey will last until 2025 when we are using Salton_Sea or LaBrea OS.

Why would security updates stop next year? The 2018 mini was still sold ‘new’ as recently at Dec 2022.

Sorry, I meant that security updates for Monterey will end next year, and I will wait until then to upgrade to a newer version of MacOS. I agree, the 2018 Mini should still be supported for several more years however.
Ahah! By “upgrade” I thought you meant upgrade the hardware!

Hi,

i work in an Apple Reseller and like many of you i'm waiting for the mini 2013 refresh.

From monday the two major Apple suppliers in Italy are suddenly and completely out of stock of minis. I know that this happen from time to time, but the timing is no coincidence.

Trust me, a new mini is coming next week, or at least we have solid evidence to believe it.
On this day ten years ago, @GabrieleR founded this venerable thread......

Despite the naysayers who occasionally get their spoke in, new Mac Minis have come from time to time, and will almost certainly continue to do so.

For the record, she said the new Mac mini would come December 2013. It finally showed up in October 2014. ;)

No new Minis from Apple with M3 chip? Might be the end of it.

No new iPad Pros from Apple with M3 chip? Might be the end of it.

No new MacBook Airs from Apple with M3 chip? Might be the end of it.

No new Mac Studios from Apple with M3 chip? Might be the end of it.

Late? They literally just have to replace the CPUs. Or are they going to do the redesign with a plastic top that was discussed a few years ago?
A new, smaller, lighter Mac mini would be nice, as someone who might need to move it and travel with it every once in a while.

That being said, there probably isn’t an M3 mini or an M3 Air because there aren’t so many chips available. Maybe in spring, when production will have improved, we’ll see them.

Or maybe Apple is just waiting until M4 for the rest of the line, in late 2024.

I forgot about the chip yield issue.

Apple could likely put it in the AppleTV enclosure. That enclosure already has an A15 SoC, an Ethernet port and an HDMI port, and a 128GB SSD. All you need to do is add a couple of TB ports and a couple of USB-C ports for USB3. Add an audio jack.

I find the last one probable.

Since Apple has always wanted mini to be ”cheapest entry”, in this A-chip era they could just let it be one gen behind.
Ie. when A4 ships, A3 mini is launched.
