It can still be a decent machine without stepping on the toes of the "Pro".
What he said.

With a careful choice of chips across the desktop range the new Mini could get a quad i7 option + a good iGPU, without stepping on the toes of the Pro or iMacs who can get various combos of hex, Xeon, EEC, dGPUs, etc

The new mini will never ever have a Xeon CPU. So that would be one good deciding factor for "Pro". Will never have best vid card or ECC Ram. It can still be a decent machine without stepping on the toes of the "Pro".

Also, Apple has had PLENTY of time to make a new pro machine, so they COULD, if they wanted to, announce it sooner than 2019. Other lesser companies have iterated an embarrassing amount of times whilst Apple has done Zip, Zero, Nada.

I was referring to having enough benchmarking power to threaten an iMac (and therefore a Mac Pro).

They wouldn't announce specifics prior to 2019 because it would affect what's left of 2013 nMP sales. Now they might have a reason for letting more information slip in certain scenarios:

1. The top spec SKU Mac Mini can be upgraded so benchmarks get within shooting distance of iMacs and the base 2013 nMP - ignore GPU because anyone could then buy an eGPU and overpower the D300x2 in the base nMP. This is doable with any powerful 4 core CPU but the price is the sensitive factor here.
2. This is done in the knowledge that the 2019 mMP is going to be priced north of $4k basic (for example) and therefore is no threat to anything short of an iMac Pro.

Now, if they announced that mMP would have single GPU options but come with dual GPU options that will give a massive clue as to the level of pricing stratosphere that Apple will be operating in. It would be a vital clue

Got tired of the mac rumor schmucks with the "The new Mac mini is almost certainly coming" thing.

Please post here because the title of this thread is more accurate.

Hate to see what the mac pro thread is trending. Those guys get really upset.

Wonder if that will make the 2014s more sought after. Planning on selling mine.

Apple's business plan is to make money. Mac Minis never made them much money. The Mac Mini is dead.

It's ALIVE!!! :)
