No it doesn't.

Just because Apple didn't pre-install Flash, doesn't mean you couldn't just go to Adobe.com and download it for yourself. :p

Pretty sure the MBA will run Flash just like any other netbook will (yeah.. I said netbook).

So I don't get what is instant on different from sleep mode? My MBP does the same except the standby isn't 30 days. There's no such thing as instant on like iPad, MBA just comes back from sleep mode.

It almost seems as if Apple is entering the Netbook category. I have an iPhone that is always with me, an iPad I have most times for casual browsing, a MacBook Pro for powerful things, yet portable, and an iMac for very powerful things. However, I also have a NetBook that is often times kept in my car for the portable need of a keyboard, now I want this MacBook Air to replace that. My wallet already hates me, i have a feeling its screaming right now.

LOL but what "you think" doesn't equate to squat 'cuz you have no knowledge on how others think. The products shoot two two differing purchase groups.

But thanks for letting us know "what you think" of 64 GB iPad owners purchase decisions...

Wow condescend much?

All you have to do is look at the Air board to see that there are a lot of people planning to sell their iPads for the new Air.

Precisely. "Instant on" on a MacOS computer is a marketing ploy, nothing else. Sure, solid state storage will allow a faster wake-up from sleep, as compared to a traditional hard drive. But the closed MBA is still in sleep mode, so it can't receive emails, calls, or display calendar alerts in the way my "turned off" iPad can.

There is a world of difference between a sleeping iPad and a MacBook.

- Design
- Istant on
- Eternal "stand by" time
- Light
- Battery life

Design? Hmmm... That's a bit of a stretch, in my opinion.

Instant on? Yep, it's pretty close to the iPad.

Eternal "stand by" time? 30 days is pretty good, but I think the iPad will last for nearly 3 months on a full charge.

Light? Yep, 2.2 pounds is crazy light, but 1.5 pounds is even lighter.

Battery life? The iPad has 10 hours compared to the MBA's 5 hours.

I checked one out at the Apple Store today, and felt that unless a user specifically needs OSX applications, I think the iPad still wins over the 11.6" MBA. For the users who already enjoy doing the 90% of activities they would've normally used a computer for that they now do on the iPad, there's probably nothing much to see here other than another beautiful Apple product that we all still want. :)

Once you configure it with 128gb (gotta account for heavier OSX apps, etc.) and a 1.6 processor for $1399, why not just get the 13.3" MBA with a 1.86 and SD card slot, 7 hours battery, and a bigger screen for the exact same price? Just to save a little over a half pound of weight???

I am amazed that the new MacBook Air doesn't have a 3G wireless option.

When Steve did his "one more thing" intro and talked about the ultraportable go anywhere iPad meets MacBook fusion, I was positive the surprise would be 3G.

As far as the Air replacing iPad for folks, I don't think so. I am biased towards the iPad, and with the right apps, you can do things on it that you can't do on a laptop. It's all situational. I can see a lot of great reasons to buy a MacBook Air. I can also see a lot of reasons why an iPad might be a better fit.

It depends on what you do, where you do it, and what other computers are already in your work/play life.

Don't worry. With so many 3G portable routers such as the MiFi, it makes more sense to own one of these, than several 3G devices and paying 3G service for each one. One MiFi will give access to all your devices.

They are still different devices.

I can take my iPad to work, for use at lunch, where I wouldn't be comfortable with taking a laptop.

The iPad has 3G internet access. There is no public WiFi at work for personal use.

The iPad can be used comfortably (for many) for reading books. A computer with a keyboard is a different form factor.

...

MacBook air is pointless. Get a MacBook pro and put an ssd in it...not much thicker, faster, can upgrade ram, more ports, backlit keyboard, still will have "instant on", can upgrade the ssd later if you want and it's cheaper and the battery life is longer. Why would you want a air?

Yeah, this is true. But don't forget that the 64GB iPad has been the most sold.
I think a lot of users that bought the 64GB iPad are thinking about the new $999 Air.

actually he's right. at least he gets how I think. There is also the fact that most people can only afford or justify one gadget. then it's hard to decide to go for iPad or MBA.

i own 17" unibody with maxed out 8GB ram for working with big PSD (4000x4000px 300dpi), and it's so heavy to bring it everyday from home to office, and when i use it on my bed it's really a hassle coz it's so big.

so when ipad is released, it's like going to heaven. it's so portable, battery life is good. i bought the 32Gb, it was alot of fun to play games and browsing on bed.

but after a while, i didn't play games anymore, the novelty of playing touch screen games was lost. it was just an euphoria. i rarely played games before i got the ipad, now it's back to normal me, just casual computing, browsing, downloading movies and watching movies.

it sucks to download movies and convert it to m4v, sync it with itunes, and i can't download movies anymore since i leave my mbp at my office.

so i think im gonna ditch my ipad for a base $999 11" macbook air.

just my thought and experience, hope it will help you make a good decision.

What do you mean you can't download movies anymore? The iPad can just download directly from the iTunes Store app.

yes u can, but not in my country. there is no music and movies store here, only app store. even though i'd really want to buy movies legally from itunes, i just can't because it's not available here.

Ah, now I understand the situation. Thats really too bad.

Do you happen to have netflix streaming in your country? You could at least stream some movies that way...

LOL, no. don't even think about streaming. my internet connection is only 1Mbit/s and i pay $75 per month for it.

this country sucks so bad, it's called Indonesia, if you are from US, then i'm on the other side of the earth.

I've been to Indonesia. It's a pretty country. I actually live in Hawaii, so not quite as far away as most people.

pretty country for tourist destination, but not for technology geeks like me.

we got 3G, we got WiMax, we got broadband, everything u can name, but the service is very poor and expensive.

iPad vs. MBA

As a person that runs an iPad-related site, I can say without a doubt there are some serious questions being raised. My email box was lit up like a christmas tree this morning with readers asking me about this very question.

I wrote a brief response but...having also gone out and purchased the new MBA 11" - I am divided. Dont' get me wrong, i love the iPad and I write about it every single day, but I feel that the new MBA is really what everyone wanted the iPad to be in the first place...it's Apple's Netbook.

I see both of them fitting in with different lifestyles/needs. With the MBA I can open it up and quickly start a blog post. With the iPad, it's a big more cumbersome - although doable.

With the MBA, I can actually create stuff and with the iPad, I can easily consume stuff.

Hardware and price aside, I think they are both going to be great partners in my mobile tech life but I'll be very interested to see what the future holds in terms of when the mac app store hits the market. That might really change people's mind on which one to get as well.

I bought the iPad on launch and used it as my only Mac .
I just got my new MBA on Friday, I love my iPad however it's now listed on craigslist.

The MBA is amazing.

but I feel that the new MBA is really what everyone wanted the iPad to be in the first place...it's Apple's Netbook.

Not everyone. I, for one, wanted the iPad to be Apple's tablet, and it is. ;)

The thing I use the iPad the most for is reading -- websites, ebooks, newspaper/magazines. When reading, you DON'T WANT a keyboard. Even the smallest keyboard on the tiniest netbook gets in the way. And you want to be able to hold the device in either portrait or landscape, to best fit the material you happen to be reading. The new Air is a very attractive machine, and I'm seriously coveting one, but it will never replace the iPad for me.

+1^
I have the exact same thoughts.

I agree. For people that mainly use the machine to consume media, the iPad is a better choice. I went and saw the air today. IT's a nice machine but iPad works better for me since I like to read on it. The ability to hold closer and zoom is a bonus as well.
