Not really I'd think, maybe a mm or two depending on if they lose the HDMI port and how much smaller the new TB3 port is.

Do you guys think that there will be no MBP 2015 redesign since they just introduced Force-Touch to the 13'' version without a new design? Could they basically do the same to the 15'' version in few months and some spec bump but no new look?

I was hoping we'd see a new design, thinner and the tapered look & new keyboard from the new retina MacBook.

What do you guys think?

The rMBP 15 uses quad-core CPUs. Intel is expected to release Broadwell quad-core CPUs in July, and we could see a rMBP 15 refresh at that time.

Apple is unlikely to release a completely new, redesigned MBP until Skylake, and Skylake is unlikely to ship in volume before January/February 2016. Thus, I suspect will we see the new designs about a year from now.

The keyboard from the new 12" MacBook sounded pretty cool in the keynote, but now, having tried it, I think it is horrific for performing actual work. Despite what Cook suggested, the feedback/feel on the new keyboard is not anywhere near as good as the feedback/feel on the 13/15" MBP keyboards. I sure hope Apple doesn't adopt that keyboard on the 2016 13" and 15" rMBP models.

I'm guessing it won't be a redesign. rather added new features with current body shell. But the skylake features of wireless charging "Rezence" if it make it to the new mbp could make a change in the design.

Whilst the original Macbook pro design lasted 2 years before moving to the unibody design, and the unibody lasted 4 until the Retina design was introduced, is there a significant chance the next major redesign is coming within the next year and a half?

While the retina design isn't dated, I can't think what else they could do to it that would be as dramatic as the unibody > retina transition other than new ports etc.

Any thoughts on what the new design could include?

I'd expect things like force touch to be introduced within the current design across the entire range before an entire redesign but I'm not sure larger changes the new keyboard design and size will move across to the pro range etc.

And for all it's trivial value, I'd love to see the 'MacBook Pro' logo to be back on the screen bezel, a small detail but it's part of the Macbook 'thing' for me and was disappointed the retina doesn't have it.

I'm glad the logo is gone. Much like how Apple doesn't plaster their brand on the iPhone or iPad's front, it's one less distracting element gone between you and the screen. The less bezel, the better! :p

Haha, that's fair enough. Maybe nostalgia's driving my attachment.

Another note: I'd like to see an improved screen within the new range, upping the PPI would be nice, with the 15 inch sitting at 220 compared to 326 PPI we've been seeing on the iPhone/iPad etc

It's a big task but it'd be nice to see an evolution of the retina display in the redesign

Hopefully the skylake introduction next year brings a new form factor. I can see huge battery life improvements. Also I hope the screen has an ultra thin bezel with no room for the macbook pro text.

Until we see the new keyboard we won't know if it is better, or just thinner.

I think the next MBP will be smaller in all dimensions, thinner bezel and a slightly tapered design. The display will have a higher pixel count, and there has got to be a Touch ID sensor somewhere.

I think its fairly obvious. Look at the 12" MacBook.

For sure, but as mentioned above it's whether the additions on the new Macbook are better or just thinner.

Assuming the pro isn't going to share the form factor of the rMB, will the new keyboard mechanism be necessary etc

I expect the new keyboard character design to transfer over regardless.

Well, I certainly hope we will get the new color options. Also, I expect the MBP to adopt the new keyboard mechanism and probably get a tapered edge + the new battery tech. I don't think that it will get that much thinner (at least at the base), because the Thunderbolt port is likely to stay for the time being. Unless they will implement Thunderbolt via the USB-C connector.

I'm not that keen about the current "the thinner the better race" I think skylake will mainly be about port changes (unless they drop USB-A and maybe HDMI because then they can shave off a few mm).

Neither am I, neither are many. The day they start dropping ports and card readers is the day I buy a Windows laptop.

No idea on design

but I think a possible redesign for Skylake march/april 2016, but more likely for canon lake a year later.

So I take it you've been using Windows machines for a while now. Was it when they dropped the IR sensor, ethernet, superdrive, FW400, the expansion slot, the floppy drive, or some other port? Man I sure wish I could put a laser disk or one of those dinner plate floppies in my MBP :D.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Over the years, I've been miffed by the dropping of ports, but Apple has always left behind ports earlier than most. It's one of the things that allow them to push the design and aesthetic envelopes. But at my current rate, I'm buying machines toward the end of a design cycle, so peripherals have generally caught up by the time I make a switch.

Id expect the next mbpr will come with:
  • better battery life
  • thinner
  • lighter
  • has only usb-c, thunderbolt-3 and magsafe ports
  • buterfly key switches with a bit more travel

I wouldn't expect a smaller bezel though. Its needed for the webcam.
I wouldn't expect a tapered design either as a more boxy shape is needed to hold all the ports.

Haha, no. I haven't touched a Windows machine in close to 10 years. I'll always keep my iMac I think but if they don't put out a new 17 inch soon, I'll probably be getting a Windows laptop.

Make sure to move quickly them. The 17" laptops are becoming increasingly uncommon. If you don't hurry, they might disappear completely in a few years.

No one is making them anymore at least not many of them, and with good reason they are big and bulky and high definition screens mean that the screen real estate is fantastic on the 15 inch laptop with scaling, there is just not that need for them anymore, you can fit the more powerful components in a smaller package and thats what companies are doing. If you're lucky bezels will shrink and screens will get bigger in the same size package but more likely they'll just shrink the laptop.

All solid suggestions,

I suppose it's another minor addition but could we expect the plastic strip on the back/hinge to be replaced with metal in the new MBP?

They seemed very proud of their 'first all metal design' accomplishment with the rMB

I think the new MBP will be thinner thanks to skylake better battery usage. This means that Macbook Air will have no place squeezed between MBP and new Macbook, and will be discontinued.

Do you think we will have to wait until 2016 for skylake?? I was hoping in a Late 2015 model for both the 13 and 15, the 15 was not updated.

If the 15" gets an update 2015, my guess is that's the last one in this form.

I agree with you. This is an unhealthy obsession with make it lighter and thinner. Enough already ... I want as much processing and battery life as possible.

The MBA would have been a great form factor over the new macbook. Way more powerful and still light.
