There are also rumors of wireless charging which would be great. All day battery life then plop it down on your desk at night, only thing better than MagSafe is no wires at all.

NO wireless charging I guarantee it. Technology isn't there for laptop comsuption and the use case for it makes in impractical.

I don't think they'll replace your current rMBP with a new model, especially for free.

And it's funny you mentioned about Apple abandoning USB for USB-C when it's apple who first forced people to buy USB keyboards and mouse by removing Serial and PS/2 ports. And they did it when serial and PS/2 ports was the standard ports in all computers and USB is the odd one

Apple replaced my 2 year old model with the current version at no additional cost to me.

Unlikely, but it would be neat. Even if it charged slowly, I would love it if there was no worry of battery level if I left it on a desk.

I meant a whole new design as in if Apple released a new rMBP, they'll not give you the newest design one but the latest of the past design.

Though, did you upgrade your original MBP upon ordering in any way or it's stock?

When Apple do a CRU (Customer Replacement Unit) replacement it must be the same spec RAM and storage, however my new one has the faster ssd and the new AMD GPU.

It's usually just a matter of what's available at the correct place at the time. It would sometimes be cheaper to supply a better specced computer than trying to get one from half way around the world. And it would DEFINITELY be faster. At the same time, I assume they know you will appreciate it and tell others about the create customer service you get.

All in all, not a huge deal for Apple, but a great positive experience for the customer. Almost always the way to go.

Of course, it's far more usual to just get the exact same model.

Just out of curiosity, did you ask for a replacement model or did they offer you this at their own initiation? Also, was this done by an Apple Store Genius/Manager or through contacting Apple through their telephone customer services?

Sorry for the odd questions, I have a 2011 Macbook pro with repeated GPU issues and was thinking maybe Apple could replace mine with the current version instead of fitting defective logic boards when the GPU fries up every time. Thanks ;)

I went straight to the top - Apple Executive Liaison who did everything to replace the system. General rule of thumb is if the same hardware fault has to be fixed 3 times you have the right to demand a replacement system - like for like. Im not close to any Apple Store so had to use an AASP who advised the screen was de-laminating a second time.

Thanks for sharing this. I guess I'll give Apple Customer Services a call when my third logic board fails and hope to get passed onto someone senior. Cheers

Do you think there will be a 12" MBP?
Or how about a 13" with the same footprint as the 12" MacBook?

Hehehe.... Seems like this thread will be up forever...

"Kaby Lake chips appropriate for the Retina MacBook Pro, the machine everyone is most curious about, may not launch until the very end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017 and thus may not be released in time for inclusion in this year's rumored update."
https://www.macrumors.com/2016/07/21/intel-begins-shipping-kaby-lake-processors/
Yeah! I hate this!

Who knows, maybe Apple pressured Intel enough that they'll give them few months earlier Kaby Lake chips like before

I would imagine this has been discussed already, but: could the delay be due to Apple choosing to wait for 14/16nm GPU's from either NVidia or AMD?

Nope, the hold up is Intel. Apple couldn't care much what GPU they put inside. They always gave subpar GPU historically

I have a Grand Unified Theory of Apple Hardware Delays... My theory is that there will be a new external GPU, after which all lines will be refreshed to support it with TB3. The reason nothing is being refreshed is that they can't release a new Mac Pro with Intel Iris graphics without also releasing the xGPU. Same with MBP.
And the xGPU is delayed, and they are stressing out over it.

xGPU will be great, I wouldn't mind having more power when I need it at home

I am a little curious, what kind of hardware do you think apple would put in a xGPU, which design would you guess/imagine that it will have and at what price point?

Historically AMD, I guess, but I REALLY hope it'll be an open standard. Though the odds are low, of course. If Apple had it their way, you would have to buy Apple branded electricity to plug your computer into..

Any thoughts on a new MBP with a somewhat duller front edge? My 2010 is still pretty sharp and digs into my wrists on occasion. It may not be not an issue if it's as thin as the current MacBooks.

I think that's an understatement. If Apple had it their way, they would be governing the world in a one-party state with complete state control on everything.

I think the edges are even sharper with the current MBA, but the rMBP is slightly improved and the rMB even more so. doubt we would see anything better than the rMB in terms of edge sharpness.

I have a late 2012 13" MCP w/Retina 8GB and 512gb flash. To this day I see no reason to "upgrade" at all. Not much has changed, just bumps in processor speed, graphics chips etc. Give me a reason. Show me something new!

Why...? If you're satisfied with your computer, you shouldn't update even if you get "something new".

Edit: Not that I'm forcing you to not update, I'm just saying you have a slightly different requirement then what is common :)
