Weren't they supposed to announce the new MBP today?

Yeah that was what we all thought. I'm happy that I opted to buy a used Mid 2015 15" instead of waiting around. Plus the idea of the new one only having USB-C ports was not appealing to me.

"We"? You got a frog in your pocket? Anyone paying attention to how Apple does releases knew that neither laptops nor desktops would be in today's event.

A sad truth even if some part of us wanted it to be otherwise. Hopefully early October - maybe Sept. 20 alongside macOS? Let the rumour gates break.

I would say the new A10 Fusion qualifies for being used in the next Macbook Pro. That's why Apple added "Fusion" to the normal naming scheme. Mark my words!

Nope, I don't think i saw a single report online which expected that to happen today. File it under wishful thinking...

I guess the announcement could happen anytime once the dust has settled on initial iPhone orders? Not a keynote but just a briefing for journalists which is something they've done in the past.

The biggest knock on the new macbook for me is if they use the god-awful keyboard from their macbook 12.

Everyone agrees that the macbook pro has the best keyboard and trackpad out there for a laptop. If they use those crappy butterfly switches I'm out even though I vastly prefer OSX over Windows 10 as a productivity OS.

Their commitment to AMD is also turning out to be a mediocre proposition too. The RX 460 is completely outclassed in Perf/W to Nvidia's pascal. People will be able to get laptops with GTX 1070's inside for about $2000 whereas the $2500 Macbook Pro will have a 460m inside which is barely faster than 750TI. Sure it'll be better for content generation but not by much.

They seem to have lost their way with Steve Jobs gone. They're not pushing more useful features but pointless features that appeal to hipsters. Take thinness for example. They are sacrificing usability in a 3.5mm jack in order to have the thinnest device. My life is going to be made harder if I buy an iphone 7.

Apple has totally lost its way IMO.

I'm happy to wait until October, but now I'm worried about UK pricing after some of the hikes in prices yesterday! Some products are now 1:1 on $ > £ (minus US taxes) and that makes for some hefty increases in the MacBook range if that trend continues with these product updates!

While I agree that the keyboard is better on the pro, it's not like the villagers are storming Cupertino with hayforks and torches due to that keyboard. Most agree it's not as good, but still OK.

I am included in the 'everyone' remark earlier and I loved the MacBook keyboard when I had one. Still have the 15" RMBP and it feels like a sponge to type on and really just looks dated.e
The new Bluetooth keyboard from Apple is also great to type on, and would have this and a butterfly keyboard over the current mbp keyboards any day of the week.

Each to their own as always but I don't like being included in swiping statements that the MacBook keyboard is hated - there are many many people on these boards who like it.

Whoa, who is this "we" you're talking about? I don't recall anyone thinking that Apple would be announcing any new computers at yesterday's event. It was clear from past keynotes that the main focus would be the new iPhone, and Apple never announces new Macs at iPhone events. Media outlets have even said that the earliest we'll see a new MacBook of any kind is in October.

I'm content to wait around. If the redesigned MacBook Pro doesn't suit my needs, I can always buy the 2015 MacBook Pro and have standard USB ports. Don't want to risk getting the old model now if the redesign blows it out of the water.

With Schiller's defense of removing the headphone jack I'm pretty sure it won't be on the new MBPs either.

Not sure which defense you're referring to, but Macrumors reported that Apple executives (Greg Joswiak, Dan Riccio, and Phil Schiller himself) explained that the removal of the headphone jack was to make way for improved water resistance and the new camera system. There's one less port for possible water ingress, and the empty space is where the Taptic Engine for the home button is located, which can be clearly seen in the slideshow during the keynote yesterday.

Either way, the supposed leaked MacBook Pro frames from this summer suggest that the 3.5mm headphone jack will remain on the MacBook Pro, located in the top right edge of the chassis. Doesn't make as much sense to remove it when the MacBook pro will probably not have a Lightning port, and the fact that space is not as tight as it is in a mobile phone.

If anything, apple should have removed the 3.5mm jack from the macbook pro and irked everyone there. They sell way way less macbook pros than iPHones. It would have been a nice test run. And people listen to music on their iPhone way more than they do on their macbook pro.

If apple does not at least announce the new macbook pro by the end of october, it'll be quite the spectacle on these forums. That will be the "last straw" because no October = nothing until 2017. A total redesign would merit an event for sure, not a press release, as these redesigns are happening only every 4 years. And Apple is quite predictable in terms of media events. The last one of the year is in October. So, no October, forums will be up in arms because we know what it means. Let's be honest, though, Apple feels zero pressure to update the pro by October and they could care less about what we think. Only if the mainstream media picks this up will this maybe apply some pressure. But when has a redesigned macbook pro been picked up by the mainstream media. The iPhone launch always is picked up.

Apple claimed two of the three reasons to remove the iphone jack was "courage" and "to move forward" towards digital audio delivery. Does this not apply for the macbook pro? What am I going to do if I plop down over a hudnred dollars on good lightning headphones? It's going to be completely useless on the macbook pro right?

The macbook pro and iPhone needs to get on the same page. Either the macbook pro needs to get a lightning port or the iphone needs to move to usb-c. This double standard is unacceptable.

So based on the iP7, should we maybe now expect a Sleek Jet Black and Matt Black model, t'would be nice return of an old style in a newer form factor. :apple:

This is exactly it. If they don't switch (which the shell is so old it may have never been mass produced) they have fragmentation in a market less than a month old.

I hope Apple simplifies things for everyone and just adopts USB-C across the board. Clearly, Lightning will never make it mainstream beyond Apple's own products, so all continuing with this input will do is slow down comprehensive adoption of USB-C across the industry.

They have a real opportunity here to do the right thing for consumers by going with USB-C. They blew it with the iPhone for (presumably) at least another year but they could at least get the MacBook Pro on the right path.

The 3.5 audio jack on Macs are optical too. The real reason the jack was removed was space constraints. The other 2 reasons are just excuses.
