Except for changing the ports, and perhaps making slight changes to the shape of the case, how much is there, really, that they can "re-design" ?
My guess is the monitor lid, it'll probably be closer to the new MacBook as for the other lid (motherboard and such) I hope they retain the current rMBP ports quantity, and would love the new butterfly keyboard but with the original rMBP key stroke travel

That's really all that would happen in a redesign. Obviously, it's getting thinner. USB-C all around. Maybe a MacBook style keyboard.

I think the biggest unknown, is whether they'd release one screen size with/without a dGPU, or just continue on with the two options.

Yes, when Skylake finally decides to come out..

No finally about it skylake is currently on schedule, and Intels release of the relevant chips seems to be late 2015 early 2016.

If they do add the just released (and very late) broadwell chips in the next couple of months that'll be worth a finally.....

Well, I would assume apple would just go straight for skylake. A redesign would certainly be welcome seemingly our current design is kind of aging, however I do hope they don't just make a thinner and make the thermals worse, or put 2 usb 3.1 type-c ones to replace every other port. That would be bad.

Well personally i reckon they'll be skipping Broadwell and go straight on a new design with Skylake. I feel something big is coming but not until Q1-Q2 2016. I'm sure Apple knew about the recent launch of quad-core broadwell chips. Just not very Apple like to release another version 3 months after an 'upgrade'.

Perhaps they know Broadwell isn't significantly better from Haswell as much as Skylake will be.

If they use broadwell it won't be an upgrade or new release, they use the same sockets and motherboards as Haswell so they might just swap them out for the broadwell chips, in a silent change...

New design for Skylake based systems (released late Q1 2016/early 2Q 2016)

Around 3 millimetres thinner.
12" MacBook style keyboard
2 x USB-C ports
1 x USB 3 ports (2 x for 15")

Where's your source of info? Or just another user guess?

If they took 3 mm off, wouldn't that make it just barely thicker than the new super thin MacBook? Isn't the new MacBook only 13? That would make the new pro 15 mm. If that's the case, I would easily choose a pro over a new MacBook

Possible though my guess is:
Retains the current rMBP keyboard travel (Apple should already receive enough feedback about people not really liking the new MB keyboard, mainly cuz the travel stroke)
The 2 USB-C ports includes Thunderbolt 3 as well.

Though I doubt they'll be able to make it 3mm thinner if they retain even a single USB3 port.

My vote is for a quad core 13" rMBP with 10 hours of battery life.

Oh yeah.

What I would like in a next gen Macbook Pro from Apple:
- screen with edge to edge design but looking at latest Macbook I have not a lot of hope
- quad core in 13", again not much hope

What are the chances they'll remove all the ports and replace them with a few usb-c ports.

Gotta disagree with dingdong. The reason they eliminated all but one port on the macbook was because of its use case - it's basically a glorified iPad pro. There is ample room on the MBP for more ports, and there should remain ample room even after a redesign. Apple kept firewire around for years, there was no reason to eliminate it, and there were many professionals who relied on it. It will be the same with the new MBP, they will probably see 2-3 USB C ports, along with a USB 3.1 A, HDMI, DP/Thunderbold port yada yada. There's no good reason to elimiate all the ports in favor of just a few USB-c ports.

Was just my opinion. I assume on a re-design USB-C ports only. Not sure how many are a few? Maybe 4 - 5 ports?

What I would really dislike if Apple removed the MagSafe connector like on the Macbook....

I think the MagSafe connector was a pure genius invention. I tripped a few times over my charging cable, and were it a PC laptop or one of these USB-C toy netbooks, I would have damaged them probably beyond repair, or it would have been very expensive. Maybe this is exactly what Apple wants, more users tripping over their USB-C power cords. Pretty silly.

It won't get USB C, that's for sure. Thunderbolt 3, that's where it is.

Oh you mean the connector. Yes it will get that, alongside some USB 3.1 A ports and an SD card reader. And of course MagSafe. They shouldn't even try to eliminate it. That's a step backwards.

I think everyone who's followed technology the past 6 months disagrees with you on this one. Apple went so far as to release their new Macbook with ONLY USB-C. To say they won't add USB-C to every design refinement going forward is uneducated. They may not go as far as to use it for power\charging like in the Macbook, but without a doubt the next moderate\major revision to the Macbook Pro and every other Mac in the lineup will have USB-C... it's the next generation in computer\mobile device connectivity.

Have you read my entire post? Thunderbolt 3 has the USB-C connector. Of course it will have USB-C, but this time the Thunderbolt 3 tech is also built in to it. The MacBook doesn't have Thunderbolt 3 because it wasn't even announced yet, and Thunderbolt 3 will only be available on Intel's Skylake CPUs which they haven't even rolled out.
