Wow. So much go unpack. RIP steam deck

Eldenring, cp2077, borderlands 4, Fornite, split fiction and Reanimal.

That's a huge vote of confidence and commitment from publishers. Nintendo will likely sell 150-250m units over the next 10 years. If you are a publisher, you will want your game on this platform.

Best of all, Nintendo has still invested heavily on fun and Co-op game play. I am not 100% decided on whether to buy one, next gen steam deck or Xbox handheld.

I have a few steam titles that I would love to play in ha dhekd mode. However I can sell my switch to dampen the financial hit of buying a switch 2.

there is no RIP steam deck given Switch games, even third party, are exorbitantly priced.

I have just come to that realisation. The benefit of steam deck is that you don’t need to buy games for two platforms. E.g all steam games own on pc can be played on the steam deck.

Nintendo tax is high. The price for these two digital consoles are nuts. However once I have played gta6 on my series x, I could consider selling it and the switch for a switch 2. It will be interesting to see if third party Bluetooth mice will eventually be supported.

Getting one from the source maybe bypass scalpers.

Yeah technically the Steam Deck would be cheaper. But you kind of have no legal option if you want to play Nintendo games.

Yeah let's not get overzealous ...

Steam Deck does all of those things and has thousands more games of interest to Steam users that Switch can't play.

Also - Switch had Skyrim, Witcher 3, Diablo III, Torchlight 2, and a bunch of other ports that were attractive to me as a PC gamer. It was that hybrid of fun ports and console stuff that led me to buy the Switch. But the second the Steam Deck came out three years ago my gaming flipped. Because I'm a PC gamer.

Using the CP2077 example - this is a FIVE-year-old game, which is being ported to Mac right now as well. They have the game in a good state and can port it for limited cost and high profit margin. That is basically it ... CP2077 and the rest for Switch 2 are basically Skyrim, etc. on Switch.

Will I buy it? Not sure.

And…. I’m out. Not for me. I will stick with my PS5 and Steam Deck or what ever PC handhelds I get going forward to upgrade it. Sorry but whilst the system price is fine, I find the mouse feature utterly pointless as you’ll need a solid surface or mouse mat to use it, and the game prices are just utterly utterly utterly insane!!! I am NOT paying that!

I’d rather upgrade to the PS5 Pro even! Cause Son’t games are cheaper! And go on sale.. or get included in your PSN Plus sub.
When the Steam Deck 2 is released, probably next year with AMD’s next gen chip, it’ll be a lot more powerful and I bet anything someone will make a Switch 2 emulator for it.
I think the Switch 2 Lite will be a better buy but not if those games still cost that much.

Mario Kart World is £75 physical, and you can guarantee all other big name Nintendo IP will cost the same.

Right now there's what two Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives and some better cross gen versions? Steam Deck has already eroded most of my interest in 3rd party games on Switch. Not sure if Switch 2 being more powerful can really pull me back, certainly not for some stuff anyways.

I was pretty ready to pull the trigger for $500 or maybe even $550 CAD but $630? $100+ before tax games? Ehh...I'm more on the fence now.

Kind of hoping this a Nintendo 3DS-esque hubris and they cut the price at some point.

And so laughable they're charging for the Welcome Tour.

Oh yeah, Sony are like here have this PS5 Digital for the same price as the Switch 2, oh and here is a FREE fun game to help you learn the controls…..
Nintendo nah we’re gonna charge you for that!

I am super curious about how unreal engine titles will run on the console. In the showcase, split fiction textures look very low detail compared with Xbox. Character look low res too. Ignore the cut scene because they are videos.

Oh really? I thought it would be a free tutorial.

I thought their was a noticeable drop in quality in all the cross gen games shown, Cyberpunk 2077 and Star Wars Outlaws etc.

On the flip side, the device has the same thickness as the switch and is not bulky like some pc handheld. There clearly needs to be a trade off. Furthermore, most gamers will buy it for Mario/Pokémon titles and the wealth of local multiplayer titles that don’t have equivalents on console.

It would be useful if, for gameplay showcases, Nintendo states whether it’s been captured in docked or handheld mode.

it looks pretty cool overall, psyched for new Donkey Kong and Mario kart.. I wish the price were a little less. $70 and $80 is getting crazy though.. and I hope there is a backlog of stuff they're releasing this year on top of those two major releases.

I'd probably go for the Mario Kart bundle if I were to get one because that's a game I'll inevitably get, it is convenient digitally for that one getting that much play, and at that point it's 'only' a $50 title (at $499 bundle, vs $449 + $80 for a physical copy or digital a la carte I assume)

Yeah they did the same for 1-2 Switch, it didn't sell well.

If the game looked crispy during the presentation it probably was in docked mode, lol.

After the initial stocker price shock I was to watch the direct again. The thing the system is just so slick, Nintendo make cracking consoles. But this will be one where second hand games are a must at those prices.

The bundle is automatically a good deal based on the separate game price for MKW. I'll get it, even just to catch up on Switch games I wanted to play like Zelda TotK. I've also held off on getting early access Hades 2... Exclusives are definitely where its at though. I'm not the heaviest gamer, but if not for backwards compatibility I may not have wanted it right away.

If I were smart/patient I'd wait for a revision (OLED!!)...

But, at least I had been sharing data with Nintendo to qualify for an order through them...

I was actually thinking about whether there could be a switch 2 pro with more power for demanding 3rd party games. Now that you mentioned the omission of an oled screen, I wonder whether there could be one.

With Nintendo second hand games aren’t much of a saving. For some titles you barely save enough to buy a Big Mac.

I a curious about the upgrades for games. Will they be seperate editions or digital upgrades that require the base game. Some games I like to buy, play and sell on. I would not want to buy a pricey visual upgrade that I can’t sell on.

What Firaxis said about CIV 7 was "good news - if you already own it for the Switch you can buy an upgrade to the Switch 2 version."

So - paid upgrades. Seems like in this case at least there are substantive upgrades and not just visuals, but who knows. Feels like it will be expensive.

Some upgrades are free at least.

I imagine it's probably publisher/game dependent. Some of them like the Mario Party Jamboree updates seemed pretty substantive, although adding mouse mode to Civ VII a little less so.

Meh think I've decided, I'll wait for the Switch 2 Lite, prefer the Lite console anyway, just find the Switch 1 Lite screen a bit small, but Switch 2 Lite I imagine will have a 7" screen so that's fine for me. Games will hopefully be cheaper by then as well.

I did also think how durable will those joy cons be? Because the top buttons are made of metal and attach to the magnets in the controller, and it seems to detach them you literally just push them apart, how durable will those buttons be over time?

I think the magnetic detachment will be more durable and easier than the fiddly railing system. Snapping the joy cons off will be easy as sharing kit kats.

I will wait to buy until I have clarity on:
-Visual improvements. Is it a big jump or marginal?
-Battery life. Is real use battery life halved?
-Price of games. £75 for a Mario themed Forza Horizon knock off is high. Not sure I want to spend GTA6 money on a title for the kids to Dilly Daley in. Will this be an indication of future prices? With Steam and Xbox you can wait 6-13 months and buy any games at 30-50% less. Nintendo rarely discounts first party titles.
-I am keen on gamecube titles. I want to see which games will be available, cost and whether there is any ai upscaling.

I'm always surprised to see Nintendo get away with selling old hardware (Ampere is from 2020) for such high prices. They've always done it since the GC days. The N64 was different, but I guess their last competitive hardware taking a front seat for performance was the SNES.

In the end, Nintendo is always about the games. Want Mario and Zelda? Then pay the price. Personally I'll sit back for now and wait for more Mario and Zelda games.

As much as it pains me to say this, Nintendo is right to not focus on performance. Especially in a handheld.
