Or the alternative would be Apple or the shop you purchase from asks if you need an adapter and if you do they just provide one free of charge. Best of both worlds then, Apple can save a bit by using less packaging and not including the adapter by default but users can still get one if needed.
All Apple has to do is provide the chargers separately to the stores in little blister packs.

This has the possibility of reducing E-Waste/packaging waste and if handled right would be a good thing.

However we all know Apple likes to charge people for everything so the chargers will be a £20 optional extra rather than free at time of purchase.

If they drop the cables, I'll be so upset. No matter how many you have, finding one when you really need one is a frustrating experience. They seem to slink away and finding one is so dang difficult.

I’m fine with the change. I never take them out of the box. I only use super short cables and 10ft AmazonBasic cables. And I haven’t used the tiny bricks in 10yrs. I have USB ports built into my outlets and I have a ChargeHub.

People saying its not the apple way to include some form of voucher. It also wasn't the apple way to release a device for less than £500! They changed their approach

Are you referring to the $399 SE (2016) or SE (2020)?

I think the idea is that it would probably cost nearly as much in logistics and courier fees if Apple were to send out 5W adapters and EarPods separately.

What have I done with the power blocks from my iPhones? I contributed them to the black hole that eventually swallows socks, and all kinds of things. I think I've lost close to a dozen of them. I keep joking that I'll find all the socks and stuff in a huge ball when it hits critical mass and starts accreting my house. Waiting until it becomes self aware.:oops:o_O:eek:

Since Apple (and all others ) are constantly trying to expand their user base - what will someone buying their first Apple phone - or getting a phone for their kid - when they find out they have to go and buy something to make it work at all.
I understand some logic to omitting it but I think it is a mistake.

Surprised someone hasn't started a poll about how many charging blocks people have vs. number of devices currently

Stuff like this has been happening for decades. I can’t count how many times I got gifts growing up only to find out it needed batteries that I didn’t have.

My wife had the original se on contract so wasn't aware of its one off cost.. Sorry

The lazy journalistic narrative I'm seeing out of this reduces everything to either "is this not true?" or "is this Apple sacrificing the user need for the sake of greed?" What they're missing is that this can be both true AND a pro-user decision by Apple.

What if Apple does not include a 5w charger in the box by default, but INSTEAD includes a instant credit for X dollars that I can use towards my choice of: A) Nearly worthless 5w charger that I have 12 of in my junk drawer, B) Solid 20w charger that may be actually useful, C) Other accessory if my charging situation is already solid, such as some new wireless headphones?

In that case, everyone wins and no one needs to own or manufacture a bunch of useless electronic junk that takes up space, materials, and eventually creates more waste.

But that’s just pure speculation on your part. The no charger rumour at least comes from sources.

It would be poor journalism to just make up an explanation for it. You’re basically saying, “hey, maybe every iPhone comes with a magical unicorn. How lazy of journalists to not even mention that that could be a possibility.” They report on what sources support.

Thinking about this - I find the concept of extras interesting. I have an iPhone and iPad. So I have 2 charger plugged in at home for night time charging. I have 1 at office so I can charge if needed I also carry 2 in backpack because I travel and don't want to try and remember to unplug and pack. So for 2 devices I use 5 plugs. I'm sure I'm not unusual in that.
I hope if Apple does this it makes it very clear in advertising and packaging that charging equipment isn't included.

Guess they’ll have the same experience as new camera buyers or Kindle buyers.
I’m also guessing that it is rather unlikely that a halfway modern household would not have a single USB port to hook a cable up to or a single wireless charging pad. Maybe not both at once - but one of the above for sure.

Take a look at the Apple Store page / app. It features a section called what’s in the box that doesn’t just list the items but even has photos of them.

I'm sure they'll mention it on the iPhone website and Store app, and store personnel will probably be instructed to ask customers if they have a charger. But have you seen Apple ads and packaging in the last 10-15 years? They absolutely will not make any bold and obvious announcements of what's not included.
