It's not so much the bad spelling that gets to me, but the bad grammar that sometimes makes it impossible to figure out what someone is trying to ask. I'd like to help, but if I can't figure out what you're asking, well...

Now if only iGary could do something about the grammar in my students' papers...

The errors bother me quite a lot but it's not so much the newbies--it's the people who have had Macs (or other computers) for 20 years and still haven't gotten things right.

iGary, you might add these:

Mbps - Megabits per second
MBps - Megabytes per second (Megabits divided by 8)
Kbps - Kilobits per second
KBps - Kilobytes per second (Kilobits divided by 8)

GB - Gigabytes
MB - Megabytes (not mb--millibits don't exist)
KB - Kilobytes
Hz - Hertz (or cycles per second)

pixels, not pixals

I always thought that bytes were bigger than bits

Don't be confused, we're both right, since we're both thinking the same things.

400 Megabits per second (FireWire 400) is 50 Megabytes per second.

The capital signifies that the number is whole, not fractional.

Actually, in SI, kilo is abbreviated with lowercase k, and hecto, h.

iGary, you forgot one. SLR camera. NOT slr or Slr or sLr. i've seen all of these mistakes and I don't see why people just don't take the time to spell right.

Right, but in the first post it says "bits divided by eight." That's actually backwards, is what I think he meant. Bits are bytes divided by eight. I'm sure you know that, it's just the semantics of what you posted.

This is a cool thread.

I think the thing that bothers me the most is the whole "Imac, Emac, Ipod, etc." thing. :D

It doesn't bother me that much, though. It's just kind of annoying sometimes.

One thing to add: "SuperDrive," not "superdrive," Super Drive," or "Superdrive."

And let's not forget how it's pronounced – OS Ten, not OS Ex...

Ya i really have to start saying OS10 inplace of OS"EX"

I blame Windows, becuz i started out use Mac OS(number) i would know that it was 8,9, then 10 but i first learned 'X'(then 9,8ect) and from my XP days i just droped the 'P'

re: iTunes, iPod, ietc.

It doesn't exactly help that Apple (and others) like to use non-standard spelling of words. If you'd never (or rarely) seen the name in writings before (it can happen, really), it should be pretty normal to assume that it's written as Ipod, or even IPOD.

iSight: How do you pronounce that anyway? Kind of like eye-sight? If so, no wonder people might think it that's how it's written. It's a camera, after all. (Not that I've ever seen anyone write it like that).

The MAC thing... Probably comes from people assuming it stands for something, like with PC.

Never get the Mbps and MBps right either. I know the difference. I just don't think about in normal usage. Usually, the topic you discuss should provide a hint on whether you mean MB or Mb. Not saying it's right.

Not to mention that they should be "Mb/s" and "MB/s" - "p" is pico, "/" is per. People who write "Mbps" are probably the same people who write "km/h" as "KPH"
