Out of curiosity, in your mind, how exactly do you see Apple supporting >4GB of RAM in a notebook? Two more slots or 4GB sticks?

ROTFLOL, well played.

Well it is not relevant how Apple will supply these chips to us today, but having the option in the future to simply get a slot compatible DDR2-800/1066 stick of 2GB, plonk it in, and have it work.

OK.

In the future (and by future I mean when Apple adopts the Santa Rosa platform), how do you see Apple supporting >4GB in a notebook?

Through 4GB memory modules?

Mind you, the current ones don't even support the full 4GB...

Yep. That being said, I do have a checklist of sorts, and when all of the items on it are met, I will indeed buy a new Mac - but I doubt that will happen for at least another year. ;)

Is one of those items on your checklist a built-in nuclear bomb, or at the very least, a laser machine gun in the place of the iSight camera? ;) :D :)

Same here.
I'm waiting for the MacBook Pro that has a built in cup-holder.
That would be RAD.

"No" to the nuclear bomb one, I already have enough of those. An iLaser would be cool, however it would have to be a Moonraker Laser specifically.

Sorry, I have the one and only "Moonraker Edition iLaser" ever built. But I may be willing to let you borrow it from time to time. ;) :D :)

Aw shucks, you're such a nice guy dmw007! :D ;)

Hmm, we appear to have steered this thread off-topic. Ooops...

Here is my list of needs before upgrading:

1. Leopard
2. BF2/COD2 compatible vid card
3. 802.11n
4. Blue-ray / HD-DVD
5. Hybrid HD with RAM in them
6. 7 HR battery ( i already get 5 in my powerbook... 7 cant be that far off and would make for a perfect time for laptop users....)
7. Redesigned Macbook Pro (hate aluminum... sucks)
8. HD Screen
9. 64 bit processor

Good news. Intel's Robson Technology which is the Hybrid HD. Its coming out with the Santa Rosa Chipset. :Just check out Wiki! So, sweet. 1,3,5,9 at the same time... plus most likely 6. That fills the requirements..... Another reason to wait for Santa Rosa. Hybrid HDs.... plus 802.11n and improved battery... and faster... WOW

I am waiting for Santa Rosa, but I whish I hadn't read this post, now I see that it'll be "obsolete" within a year lol. I currently have no need to buy a laptop, I'm happy with my dell 710m and I'm saving for the 2499 MBP. Well, I'll stick to my plan and buy as soon and Santa Rosa/Leopard are released, I will enjoy it because it would be my return to the mac world. It's pointless to be always waiting for something better 'cause you'll be waiting for ever, be happy with your current laptop.

Yes, those are quite significant improvements for one chipset to incorporate. It definitely makes waiting for Santa Rosa justifiable, however at the end of the day I think the Merom portables will be just fine as well for those who want something now. ;)

Plus, when all these "leading edge" features are actually realized with the release of Santa Rosa next year, guess what - they won't be leading edge anymore, and something even newer and better will be on the horizon! And so the endless waiting game and ever-improving world of technology continues...

It was in an unaired Bond film- it was deemed to indecent to air on television. ;) :D

I agree, Santa Rosa will be a great upgrade, but Merom is a great chip as well. :)

True, there is always something "bigger & better" on the way. :)

The GMA X3000 expected to launch with the Santa Rosa chips right? That's kinda the only thing I'm looking forwards to, since it seems Apple is going to stick with IG graphics in the lower end machines (mimi and macbook). The X3000 definitely could d the trick for casual gaming, though, running yesterdays games quite well, and being able to at least play todays, albeit with lower setting and at a less impressive framerate.

If the mini had the X3000 today (and it's as good as I'm assuming it will/it's being promised to be) I wouldn't have any hesitation about it at all. And, it would almost be worth what Apple is asking for it!

Hush! Do you not think that Nehalem sounds just like a place where Jesus has treaded before? It is certainly not related to hell!

Probably coming out 2008, so it will most likely be the thing for Merom owners to lust for on their next upgrade cycle... if you upgrade so fast

My guess is, its the region in israel where the chip is being engineered.
