The one thing that really sucks (that I think a lot of people can relate to as well)

Scenario:

Last night me and some friends are hanging out at hooters when we decide we want to go back to my place and watch a movie. We find a movie we like and decide to purchase it. Now I realize that I have to wait for this thing to download.

Why can we not play while it's downloading like on the Mac? My "12Mbps" internet took almost an HOUR to download Prince of Persia last night.

Will it ever be possible for Apple to implement this because it really sucks. Renting is not a "solve" for me either as I like to own my material.

***Not related but can I disable the download of the SD version of movies. If you pause it and delete the SD version it will just re-appear in your queue next time you download something***
 
At least watching rented/bought movies/tv shows on my apple tv you can watch them when they are still downloading. Usually withn a few seconds, very rarely does the download go slow and if it does restarting the apple tv fixes it.

Ummmm...I think he was joking. Don't worry "toypadlock", I got it.

Nonetheless, the only experience I have with renting is a with a couple of Top Gear episodes in HD. These episodes are about 50 minutes in length. When I rented them, they were available for viewing within 20 seconds. My ATV is wired ethernet and I do have fast internet.
 
You said you decided to 'purchase' the movie? I assume you did it from your Mac as the new ATV will no longer allow purchasing?

If this is correct, the new ATV should not allow this (as you have discovered), as the file has to be complete before tarnsfer/playback across the network. Renting the movie would have given you instant gratification however. The new ATV is designed for renting in mind...and in your situation, I would have thought you would also be looking to rent in this situation (coming home after a bar with some friends)...unless you really love PoP?

(Old ATV would allow you to choose and purchase a movie on the ATV interface and yes, you would indeed be able to watch it within seconds based on your DL speeds as it finishes downloading in the background.)

That being said, I am indeed surprised that the movie took almost an hour at your connection speed. You must have been getting a much slower actual download speed?

Who stumbles home after Hooters and decides to BUY "Prince of Persia" with his buddies anyway? :p

Several possible answers - all of them a problem on your side.

1) Your AppleTV is defective
2) Comcast is throttling you and you aren't getting close to 12 Mpbs (this is most likely, IMO)
3) You are on wireless and have an amazingly crappy wireless connection

I rent movies all the time. I have 15 Mbps FIOS. Every HD movie starts and plays without skipping within 10 seconds.

I've done this both on the old and new ATV. And I'm doing it over a (very near) 802.11g wireless network.
 
yet another example of how the previous ATV is far better than ATV2.

On the previous model, you could have bought that movie right on the ATV (not your computer). And it would play almost instantaneously (just like if you rented it).

That's impossible on ATV2...the list of these is growing pretty big...

...get an old ATV1 while you still can find them used...

He PURCHASED the movie on iTunes...if you want to purchase a movie, you have to wait for itunes to download the whole thing before you view. Nothing is defective. Nothing is wrong with his broadband.

...you just can't read ;)

that being said...get an ATV1...problem solved...
 
Maybe just pre-order the movies that you know you'll want to own. That way when you get home it's waiting for you.
 
Who would really want to buy Prince of Persia other then my 9 year old daughter. When renting movies on my Time Warner connection I am able to start watching in 1 minute.
 
I know exactly the scenario... I have a 3 and a 5 year old we bought Beauty and the Beast HD had to buy it on my imac then wait an hour for it to download(along with the extras) then was able to watch it... I think this is a flaw with the new ATV,

Not to mention that it constantly drops my home sharing I have to restart the thing several times a week,

I understand the rental aspect, however I like to buy the movies I want to watch.. so maybe a possible solution is 1. make movies watchable while downloading like original atv, or some sort of internet based library meaning if I buy a movie through itunes, it never has to download I can just go and watch it its kept on my itunes account(something like that)
 
Hopefully Apple will improve their iTunes offering and allow you to stream anything that you've previously purchased to any of your iDevices. That way the AppleTV could stream your purchases from the internet even if your Mac is off.

I'm just curious about your situation. I have read other people with this issue (dropping home sharing), but I think the vast majority, me included, do not experience this at all. So, since it seems likely that you either have a bad ATV, or router, or some other issue, why not contact Apple for support? Maybe they could help resolve this issue.

I think that THIS is a very likely solution to the problem, and is hinted at by the current incarnation of AppleTV.

Think about it: You can have access to your iTunes-owned movies, shows and music ANYWHERE you have internet access without syncing.

I agree that this is where Apple is going with their server farm. Eventually we will just stream everything. I just wish I knew when this would become reality. I am very anxious for this.
