It wasn't the money, it was the commitment from MS to make Mac versions of Office for a period going forward. Without that, MacOS would have been even more backwater. It could have been the fatal blow.
In return, MS got an end to the lawsuits and someone to point at and say they weren't a monopoly. It was mutually beneficial although clearly Apple was in worse shape and benefitted more.
