And who is Sygic anyway?

Navigon is an equally well-known brand, and will probably offer a perfectly good GPS experience.

Heard somewhere that they use basically the same maps. Hopefully Navigons software is better than this!

I like this idea alot, think about it. If your like me and really use GPS, now you wont have to carry a tomtom and a phone. Also i heard that it has a microphone built in. That means could be easily used for hands free. For hands free/gps id pay around 120.

But now i wonder, if i bought the mount at the apple store... do you think it will come with a promo code to download for free?

No. The article said you'll be able to buy the software separately, the mount separately or a bundle. They have no intention on giving anything way. Now, on the other hand, you will likely be able to buy the "bundle" at the Apple store and be given a code for your download. Thats quite likely. I'm not sure if that's what you meant or if you meant that buying the mount (separately) gets you the software for free. That will never happen. They are quite clear that the mount is an optional purchase.

Since the mount has a GPS Chipset of its own and Bluetooth for the calling aspect as a speakerphone I can't imagine ever fitting the software and their mount into your $120 ceiling. Read the Macworld article. It's much more than a "microphone built in."

I can't imagine many people buying it for more than $120...

LOL! I've been saying that since the beginning, the TomTom "kit" mount thing has a SirfStar III gps chip in it for real-time gps tracking just like dedicated GPS systems.. It's just using the iPhone as a display screen basically.

Exactly, with a bit more integration. You get access to your own contacts blended in to the software which then syncs with your Mac/PC/MobileMe. So, that makes it a bit easier to add items into the "GPS." Of course, you have the fully integrated phone aspect. TomTom seems to be the only one to aggressively address that right now. The IQ Routes and MapShare (if they do add it) are presently in only their higher end models.

They will. They're already paying Navigon MobileNavigator even more with no cradle/mount. Bring up your iTunes and put in Navigon and look at the price it gives you... $139.99 and for some reason you think TomTom is going to sell theirs for $120 or less for software and mount?

Now take a look at Sygic Mobile Maps America. $79.99 for software and no hardware from a complete unknown in the GPS business and right now they have an equal number of negative reviews as positive.

I think the fact that the car kit doesn't fit an iPhone case is a deal breaker for me. I mean who doesn't have a case on their iPhone?? pretty big oversight IMO

I have BSE on my iPhone, been prepared for that car kit that Tomtom will offer. But you are right, that's a pretty big issue for a lot of iPhone users that has a case on it.

Here's something from the LA Times writer, Michelle Maltais, from yesterday:

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2009/07/tomtom-iphone-app.html

While most of this is a rehash of the MacWorld article there are a couple of other tidbits.

Tom Murray, VP of TomTom said there's a possibility they could look into also adjusting the software for use with the original iPhone as well as the iPod Touch. I posed this possibility a couple of weeks ago. The car kit has a built-in GPS chipset so, theoretically, they could suddenly provide GPS to the iPhone 2G and the Touch. He indicates it's not a priority but a possibility. That would certainly open up possibilities to a whole new group.

He also says they're working out purchasing additional map locations.

Nothing new on the price or release date though.

I have two concerns over the TomTom:

1. The holder won't hold an iPhone in a case. Why couldn't they make the holder adjustable? I still buy it but I wish my phone could still be in it's case.

2. Price. ATM the nav apps have been resonablable priced $79.99 Sygic, but having a look at TomTom's other products they are priced at the high end of the market which probably means their bundle will be quite pricey. Who knows they might surprise us with how cheap it will be.

And finally a question. From what I have read it looks as if Asia and Australia will be left out in the intial launch or is that wrong?

Haven't read the whole thread, but I used G-Map today to go to my nephew's Jiujitsu tournament 30 miles away and it worked flawlessly (in Florida).

It was the first time I'd used it as a GPS, but it was perfect with voice directions, my speed and every other feature my TomTom unit has. I used the car charger with it and used "fastest route" and it was perfect.
