So this is what I'm going to do. I have a XP Pro 64bit SP2 install discs.

1. Get CrossOver
2. Run CrossOver
3. Install Windows
4. Once Windows is installed, open a virtual window of windows xp.
5. Download Steam and TF2
6. Play TF2, it should run fine then, right?

Or even, plan B...
1. Use Bootcamp
2. Partition disk
3. Install Windows
4. Download Steam and TF2
5. Play TF2, it should run fine, maybe? Apparently it does but I don't know.

I'm a huge tf2 player and now I'm wondering if you had any crashes or defects on maps or anything. Did you?

I read some other forums about running TF2 on a macbook and they had some problems while playing.

MacRumors is pretty reliable so this is my source so far, haha. Thanks! :)
Umm.... Why would you download and install windows once you've goten crossover? Crossover supports the running of windows programs, it more or less emulates the environment not the actually OS. Hope I just saved you 4~5GB of space...

Totally new to all this Windows emulation stuff...

So with Crossover, you do not need to buy Windows OS? It just emulates the environment so you can install Windows programs on your Mac WITHOUT having the OS installed?

Yeah, i was a noob at the time with CrossOver. Its a nice program.

I still can't get TF2 to work on my macbook. It loads at the map and it just lags and stops. Its annoying. Its frustrating how other users got there 2.4ghz macbook and got it to work with the same hardware when I have problems, haha.

Exactly!

I've been watching and waiting on the Team Fortress 2 on Crossover scene for a little while, and now I have something to bring to the table.

After hanging on like mad, waiting for some form of patch to come out in order to sort this horrible texture - loading ordeal - I can 100% confirm that as of the new Leopard Graphics Patch (installed after 10.5.2), Team Fortress 2 runs unbelievably smoothly on my white Macbook (2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, X3100 GPU).

Settings are as follows:

Resolution: 1152x720
Model Detail: High
Texture Detail: Medium
Shader Detail: High
Water Detail: Simple
Shadow Detail: Low
Antialiasing: None
Filtering Mode: Trilinear
VSync: Disabled
HDR: None
Bloom's been disabled as well.

So to clarify - I am currently running Team Fortress 2 through Steam, through Crossover 6.2, on the above settings. The framerate ranges from 20 to around 45/50, so it's 150% playable (won my fair share of matches!)

And just to eliminate any skepticism that may have arisen:

Sorry to bump up a rather old topic - but I'm sure you're as interested as I was when I first booted up Team Fortress to find it running gorgeously. :)

Enjoy!

I have the same macbook, but when I try to load a game in TF2 (including commentary), it crashes and closes with any error message. Details:

CrossOver 7.1
Legit Team Fortress 2 disc (not the orange box disc)
Using the following launch options:
-dxlevel 90 -window -novid
also tried
-dxlevel 80 -window -novid

I went to options and used the same options that you did.

What am I doing wrong?

try -dxlevel 81, also put in -console to let you get into the game and turn off shaders and shadows...

This article describes how to run “The Orange Box” PC version on an Apple Macbook.

Macbook specs:
Processor: 2.2GHz Intel Core Duo
RAM: 2GB 677 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics: Intel GMA X3100 Chipset with 144MB

Intro:

This article is specifically for the Macbook, but may be compatible with the Macbook Pro. I will explain step by step how to install “The Orange Box” using CrossOver as well as fixing some common problems with getting the games running. Any additional suggestions or productive comments by the readers is welcome.

Items you will need to complete this install:
-CrossOver, an application for running Windows applications on Mac systems
-External USB DVD drive (I will explain why shortly)<snip>

What is the issue with allowing the install to continue with the second disk? You state (I will explain why shortly) but you never do.

You won't be installing Windows in Crossover. The Windows equivalent is already present. Read up on WINE and you'll gain a better understanding of what Crossover, CIDER and WINE are.

The issue of installing using the 2nd disc is that it gets stuck in the MB. Some reason Crossover won't let you eject the first OB disc to continue installation with the 2nd. I forget what I had to do but I used some terminal commands to finally allow it to eject. Disk utility and what not would not work.

Trial and Error.
I still can't get this to work. :(

Like I said before, trial and error.
CrossOver was a trial version. I wanted to try it out first before actually buying at the time. Yet to this day, I still cannot get it to work on my macbook. Its frustrating.

Anyone have any lucky yet? I've seen multiple people online do it but there's always some skippage or massive lag.

Crossover vs Fusion vs Parallels

So I've recently been getting into Team Fortress 2 & Left 4 Dead, and I primarily play in Boot Camp.

However, if I wanted to get in some quick playtime on the Mac side, what works the best these days? Parallels 4, Crossover Games, or Fusion 2?

I play TF2 via Crossover games all the time. I have not picked up L4D, so I cannot help you there, but Crossover Games works well for me and TF2.

Okay. Last time I tried out Crossover Games, it had alot of little glitches, minor stuff like opacity of the water not being displayed properly, and the Engineer's buildings not displaying wireframes, that kind of stuff.

I just downloaded the trial of Crossover Games but I gave up after I realized I'd have to redownload all 6GB of TF2.

This sounds like a task for while you are sleeping.

I don't have any of the glitches you have described in COG. Perhaps version updates solved these problems?

You got it working? TF2?

Steam Community

Has anyone been able to access steam community and their friends list? I can launch steam and I can launch my games from steam but I can not play with my friends. (shift - tab) feature does not work in game because I cannot join the community.

More Specifically

After I launch steam and try to select the "My community" tab a window appears that says "[X] Wine Internet Explore" and inside the box it reads...

steamcommunity.com uses an invalid security certificate.
This certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown.
(Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer
[ OK ]

So this apparently the reason why I can't see my friends online.

Any tips? Thank you in advance :)

Are you using bootcamp or something else?
I still can't even get the game to work. I got Crossover Pro and installed steam. Then downloaded TF2 the game runs but when you get into the game it just freezes. I still don't know whats going on. This sucks.

I have a black macbook (2.1 Ghz, 2 gigs of memory, GMA 950 card with 64 MB of memory). Should I even bother trying this, or just hang my head in shame?

So I've recently been getting into Team Fortress 2 & Left 4 Dead, and I primarily play in Boot Camp.
But doesn't boot camp cost hundreds of dollars? I mean, every iMac OS X 10.0 (and up) comes with the boot camp installer, but to actually run it you need a windows OS don't you? And buying that can cost alot, especially if your only running it to play games (I'm not saying YOU do, I'm just talking in general).

My TF2 isn't working at all. I'm running it on Crossover Games (7.2) and whenever I load up a server it won't even get to the game screen. It'll just freeze while loading.

Does anyone have answers, advice or alternatives?
