Argh! I was defeating my second dragon in like 5 minutes and Lydia went Mia. Is she dead?

Can anyone answer this? Is this a result of it being a console port? In ES3, as I remember you could hold your weapon and shoot magic at the same time. In ES5 it seems like you must equip a weapon or magic to each hand and to switch out, you must stop the action, go to a different screen to make a selection... Maybe the answer is staring me in the face, but I don't yet see it. :(

Im not sure how to do this on the PC but on the 360 you can "favorite" any item, spell, weapon, armor, or shout to your "favorites" list. This allows you to press up/down on the D-pad to swap out things on the fly. By highlighting the item, spell, act you want and pressing LT/RT you can equip it on the correlating hand.

I just had my first dragon fight (being level 5). Well, not exactly my fight, had 5 more npcs with me. All I can say is, dragon fights in skyrim is a total experience on its own. You got to see it to believe it.

Anyways, being a melee fighter, I had to wait until the npc archers forced the dragon to land. Still, I could not get near it, as it seemed he preferred to target me when I was getting close. Luckily, I was able to get a bow and arrows from a corpse nearby - dragon attacked a guard post outside the city and killed all but one guard. Lowered his health by shooting arrows, hiding between ruined post to avoid fires, and then a final running blow from my 2-hand war hammer. It was epic.

I hope, though, that on higher levels I will be able to bring one down on my own, even as a melee fighter. Right now, it seems just impossible.

I'm lvl 26, so not uber by any means, but I still can't kill a dragon by myself; I mostly assist while the melee fighters tank. :)

On dragons and arrows. I don't know if there are different levels of dragons, but my arrows do noticeably more damage to the ones I've fought than things like trolls -- which I avoid like the plague.

Anyways, playing a sneaky rogue/ranger, so I'm usually hiding from a distance while dragons attack a town or fort.

Similar on the PC. When in favorites, number keys 1 - 8 can be assigned. My Naga is Skyrim happy. Coupled with my G13 I never touch my keyboard. :)

eh... I was taking them down alone around level 10 using pure magic... but its still difficult and I use a lot of potions.

When trying Melee its harder, but I've had more luck running up from behind the dragon when they land and just taking cover and avoiding them when flying.

You can hold a one-handed weapon in one hand and have a spell in the other. If you equip a two-handed weapon, your spell is unequipped. For some reason, even bows are considered two-handed weapons even if you're not aiming, even though you're only using one hand to hold it. I think that's the difference, IIRC in Oblivion you could have a bow equipped and still heal yourself.

Does anyone know how to initiate a "wait time" on the xbox? I am trying to do some selling and need to wait for the gold to be replenished but can't figure out how...and I'm tired of paying for a hotel room. Help?

I think it's the Back button. Not at my 360 to try it now. Obviously, you won't be able to Wait at all times.

Has anyone had any wacky Skyrim moments yet? (i.e. 'glitches' in the game)

Once summoned a Familiar, before starting to chop some firewood. For some reason, the Familiar came over and stood on the axe to started flying all around the place.

Or last night, a courier came over to calmly talk to me just as I was being attacked by a large cave bear. I couldn't hear a word he said over the roars of the bear, and he soon died (that's probably one quest I'll never get to play). In the same session, another courier started talking to me, underwater, as I was swimming in the river. I started drowning mid-conversation to had to cancel out of the dialogue!

Guys, regardless of platform (console, PC) stay away from the update released today. It's breaking the game in various ways - major breaks not just glitches. If you are on console, disconnect your internet connection before playing. Steam users, play in offline mode.

Here are videos of several Skyrim bugs. The one about putting a bucket over the head of an NPC, then stealing everything in sight, is funny. The horse flying on a dragon is also a good one.

Same here. I can't take one by myself at 26 still; mainly the moves to properly handle them with a bow which is my strongest weapon. But I do drag them to whatever is near. Preferably a giant's home so they can take them out quick. Otherwise I check map and kite him to closest mob to assist. So whoever is closest to help, could be gaurds or could be enemies. They fight dragon first before going for you.

When looking at items in the Inventory ('I' key) screen or magic/powers/shouts in the powers ('P' key) screen, you can click the 'F' key to favorite/unfavorite them. Then when you exit those screens back into the game, the 'Q' key will bring up a list of your favorites. You can then hover over the items/spells in the favorites list with your mouse cursor and assign some of them to number keys.

I helped kill one with a giant, but mostly I still run and hide from them. Saving them for later in the game when I can take on down with a single arrow -- I can only dream... :)

I have several shouts that aren't activated, even though I've absorbed 5 dragons souls. Do you know if I need to go back to the gray beards to make them work?

Steam updated Skyrim today and when I tried launching it, it wouldn't work at all. I finally remembered to right click on the game and have Steam check/fix the cache and fortunately that resolved it.

I finally made it Markarth... Needless to say, all the guards are now DEAD!!!

Bow comment:
There is a bow that someone posted to N4G yesterday that can have an attack of 1000+ damage with no cheating. It has to do with enchanting and smithing properly. Takes a while to get prepared to make it. So now have a goal of working my way to make that bow.

Found it: http://n4g.com/news/894942/best-bow-in-skyrim-gives-over-1000-damage

Shouts Question:
No, You can unlock anywhere. On PS3 when you highlight the shout that is grey'd out there is an option to use soul to unlock it. It will unlock one word of it, if you have more words for it you have to use a soul for each word.

Thanks! :D There was an unlock option that I missed. EVIL UI!!!

WOW on that bow! My Glass Bow that I enchanted with frost damage only does 35 + 5pts frost. I need to get smithing and enchanting up. I still can't even guild my elven armor.

The Ebony bow I stole does 44 damage. Enchanted it to add shock damage.

When in your Q menu, press any of the number keys while hovering over the desired weapon/spell with your mouse. It will hotkey it.

Thanks. This is what I've found. First you go to your inventory and you run the cursor over any item you wish to be a favorite. While it is highlighted you hit F (favorite) key. Now in game you select Q and all of your favorites appear. Then you run your cursor over each item and while an item is highlighted, select a number 1-0. Close the Favorite pane. Now when you hit a number, the items your wielding will change.

For weapons in left or right hand, you have to separately open your weapon inventory, highlight a weapon and click either your left or right mouse button to decide if you want it in your left or right hand.

Now back to favorites with numbers assigned... For a spell if you hit the same number twice it will dual wield spells in both hands. I've noticed that some numbers assigned to a favorite will disappear after you have used that favorite. For example if I use my bow (7), then switch back to sword (1), the 7 no longer pulls up my bow and I have to go back into the Q menu and reassign the bow as 7.

This is convoluted as compared to ES3 IMO. As I seem to remember you could hold a key to pull up a spell list and then scroll to a spell. I also remember you could use one key to shoot spells while holding weapons in your hand. I'm getting used to it but it is inferior to ES3. Now I think I all ready mentioned this but when I played ES3, my Nostromo N52 was working which makes a big difference in selecting these types of commands.

Belkin does not appear to have made drivers for the Nostromo on Windows7. Any ideas on a work around? I remember on the Mac side there was a software program that could be use for game controllers. Anyone remember a name? Maybe there is also a Windows version?

Thanks for listening! :)

I've also found in my inventory list, I can't see all of my inventory, it goes off the bottom of the page and I can't scroll down to it. I don't know if this is a bug or operator error. Ideas?

I've found a dual handed sword, helmet, and I think it was an axe in ebony, but no bow. But now I'll be looking for one of me own. ¬¬

@ Huntn,

I had some of favorites loose their number assignment early on, but it hasn't happened since. I thought it was weird that it happened, but noticed it right away.

I can scroll in the menus using my scroll-wheel to get to the bottom, or click my S-key to go down. Sounds like a bug. :O

Try downloading and installing the inventory mod. But if you do, I ran into a bug under the book's category and when in enchantment , where as the pop-up item wasn't the one I was hovering over; I found that changing the sort-preference would usually fix it.

I think I've tried the scroll wheel. I'll try S and report back. What does the inventory mod do? Thanks!

I mentioned it before, but I am planning on checking out the Skyrim strategy guide soon and will report back. The damn thing costs $26 new and weighs 3 pounds. Amazon sells it for $16. :)

Hah, thanks. I just saw the dragons flying backwards bug which results from the latest patch too. :p

I am soooo bad at this game; perhaps I should go down a difficultly level. I'm Lvl 22, all light armour with the matching bonus, and I've been smithing it to improve it; and still bears kill me almost every time, with just a couple of swipes. Sometimes I can outrun them, but rarely kill them without help. I feel like a dweeb. I played Oblivion for hundreds of hours, and don't remember the 'average' creatures being this tough. :(

I'm not sure how mobs level in Skyrim vs Oblivion. There was an issue in Oblivion with leveling the right way. Something along the lines of when you reach a point were you can level, instead go do a couple extra dungeons. In other words don't level based on other skills but level based on combat skills, spend adequate time bashing things to get your combat skills up before leveling. Could this be it?

I don't really understand the leveling mechanism in Skyrim (I'm too new at it). I understand you no longer have to sleep to level. Is there a way to pull up a leveling page?

being a Melee/magic/bow is easy to slay a dragon, but never found it hard to slay a dragon in the beginning, but now I totally avoid the ancient ones  my character is totally weak against fire :( well, I guess I just have to enchant a bunch of fire proofing stuff
