I think this is probably pretty accurate. I've seen other manufacturers that dropped the quad core when Haswell came out. I'm sure Apple could have really fit the quad core if they really wanted but why would they put a ton of engineering effort into an entry level product? I also wonder if they are considering making the mini even smaller with the soldered ram and having only 1 SATA port.

Shrinking it more would create more of a handicap. Macbook Airs can't run at their default clock speed for very long. Just not enough cooling. Imagine if they shrank this generation of Minis they would be even slower and everybody would be even more pissed.

They put dual thunderbolt on the things I think they still want it to be as flexible as possible they just want the revenue from the ram upgrades and a lower entry point so quad cores don't make it this time.

Greed = Good for ALL the stock holders. That is ALOT of people. Many simply call it... get ready... drum roll... BUSINESS!

The standard short-sighted shareholder reaction. Business is building a long term relation, and earn money more than once. I dropped apple. I felt left in a dumpster. After Mac Plus, SE30, LC475, G4 tower (THAT was a good deal, even better than 2012 minis), Hackintosh (in the dark years), Mini 2011 (which will run for many years I hope) I recently switched. To Surface Pro. I had it with Apple: uninspiring hardware (boring looks, expensive), the lack of iOS/OSX merger, ugly GUI (Candy Crush Saga inspired). But as you can see I was a cheapskate, so nothing lost with me. Only froblem: I'm seen as evangelist, and I already converted 5 more to SFP 3, two of them mac users.

Keep up the good work.

I would love to know how many of these apologists get a check directly from Apple vs. how many work for the PR companies?

There can't REALLY be this many people HAPPY that Apple "innovated" 2 cores and RAM slots away.

Never heard a shareholder complain that the stock price was too high.

Maybe people are not jumping for joy about it. But neither would jumping off a bridge be a good idea either. It is what it is.

This is the REAL reason:

A Mini Quad with discrete graphics would challenge the entry Mac Pro at half the price...

Maybe is intel rather than apple to complain with. Better xeons would keep the distance with i7 larger which obviously is not the case
This plus the fact Apple made it clear that they see the Mini as an entry level machine - quad core 16/32mb ram, 4k graphics are not entry level

They got rid of it so people wouldn't buy a 799 mac mini and then load it up with third party gear and use it as their workhorse for heavy video editing etc. They want you to buy an iMac 27" or a Mac Pro for that. Mini is a casual computer in their eyes.

Thank you, this guy gets it. Apple can't have lost Mac Pro sales because of a sub 1000 dollar Mini.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are going to lose some sales now. Apple has long not been the only option for video editing or other pro software. In fact, they are retiring their pro photo software Aperture.

People that do work at a desk with a large screen and not starbucks will be better served by a machine that's upgradable and not crippled with slow processors.
