Not everything has changed since. Intel Macs still have a Target Mode, either FW or TB as appropriate and cloning is still done by DU, CCC or SD.

Of what modern usage is Rhapsody abs what can it be still used for ?
Literally nothing useful. There is almost nothing in the way of 3rd party software and most of those relate to server duties or databases. It only lasted six months as a stopgap server system and was an improvement on OS9 + networking by all accounts. It's mostly just a curio and a fun look at how OS9 transmogrified into OSX.

It is the only Apple OS that by design ran on generic PC systems (at least in its development phase) as well as Apple hardware.

It's fun to play with though. Trying to build old unix tools and stuff for it, can have an XWindow, ssh, lynx , plus the BlueBox for running 8.6, very cool to have a unix and 8.6 running at the same time on their own screens.
One can use all the softs available on 8.6 on his own screen.
I prefer it to the very early OSX 10s, which had useless heavy graphics showoff, while been slow and not much more useful. I find Rhapsody funnier.

Can anyone with a Kanga and OS X Server 1.2v3 Rhapsody installed confirm if there is a sound issue? On my Kanga with Rhapsody, if I play a system beep in the Sound settings, the sound cuts off almost immediately.

Has anyone seen an issue (on a gigabit Ethernet graphite g4, but I don’t think that should matter) where the install fails with the whole system shutting off after the first reboot to the Mac OS C Server Installer? It starts to install then says “CD-rom boot procedure complete” for a while then quickly says “it’s safe to turn off the computer” and shuts off. Restarting just repeats this indefinitely.…. I am 99% sure I am installing 1.2v3 so it should be compatible.

Are you running stock hardware - no updated graphics card?

I was, for real, just looking for Rhapsody software yesterday and ran into this mere hours after it was put up. Absolutely much appreciated.

Hi, everybody. I've been trying to install Mac OS X Server 1.2v3 on a Gigabit Ethernet G4. It's the Dual 450 MHz model, with 1.75 GB of RAM (3x 512 MB + 1x 256 MB), GeForce 2 MX graphics and a 30 GB 7200 RPM drive. It boots the installer successfully, but when the first reboot happens (into the OS X side of the disc), it just gets stuck on a white screen. Is the GeForce the one at fault here?

If that's not the stock graphics card, that's probably the issue... I remember mine getting stuck on a white screen at one point, and switching graphics cards fixed that issue... For the record, I've never been able to get the installers to work correctly. Eventually, I downloaded an image a guy made up on the next computer forums, and I just restore that to whatever drive I'm going to use. It's on their FTP, and it's specifically tuned to be usable on a cube apparently (I haven't tried this - but when I had a drive with it on there connected to my cube through target disk mode, it DID show up as a bootable option). If you go this route, you have to restore the image to the whole disk. Don't try it to a partition: I've never gotten that to work. I restore to the disk, and it leaves the rest of the disk empty so I can use a partitioning utility after the fact to add other ones for dual/tri booting. If you dual boot with OS 9, either keep the install disk around or copy the boot disk selecting program (I forget what it's called on Rhapsody, it's unique as far as I know) to your OS 9 installation. I believe there's also an extension that needs copied with this so your computer can recognize UFS partitions for booting while it's in OS 9. Without this, you will be stuck in OS 9 without some openfirmware command tricks.

Thanks for the tips. I've taken a Rage 128 Pro out of a dead Sawtooth. I'll swap the GeForce for it and try again.

Something that as been bothering me for a while, only now have the idea to ask other Rhapsody users :
Do you manage to have correct local time in the BlueBox ?
I set my Rhapsody install to my local time, that is CET (Universal + 1) + summer saving time (so that is Universal + 2):

But in the MacOS 8.6 BlueBox, it's stuck to Universal time :

And no way to change it, it's greyed out.
Does anyone with a Rhapsody install with BlueBox noticed the same thing ?

For Rhapsody aficianados: OmniWeb 3.x can be hooked up with the Crypto Ancienne lib via the 'carl' program to self-host an HTTPS proxy to access websites requiring TLS 1.2 & 1.3, courtesy of the ubiquitous software wizard Cameron Kaiser. No JS in OW 3.x, of course....
See http://oldvcr.blogspot.com/2020/11/fun-with-crypto-ancienne-tls-for.html
and http://oldvcr.blogspot.com/2023/04/crypto-ancienne-22-now-supported-on.html

Have fun!

P.S. Shoot, forgot to place a link for OW 3 - find it in
THe Omni folks have been part of the NextStep/OS X/macOS world since the NeXT days...

Hi there, I do net get OSX Server installed on my G3 B&W. After the first step to boot the CD and launching the installer I got stuck in the first reboot (nothing installed yet) with "root device". Regardless what I try to type in here "sd0d", sd1d, etc.) I never get any further. What do you think is the problem? OF seems to put the wrong values for the boot up and installation...

B&W G3s are very picky about drives. Rhapsody can also be picky about DVD/CD drives. I would think it might be something to do with that.

OR it could be an issue with boot parameters like you suggest, which is something that I have experienced, but never on a B&W, just laptops with dead PRAM batteries. I would make sure the battery is good if possible. That may be an easy solution.

To make sure we're on the same page, are you booting the install disc into Mac OS 9 and formatting the HDD, selecting the partition, and clicking install? Then you have the issue on reboot when it's supposed to go into the UFS partition of the disc and start installing?

sort of...

I am booting the Server 1.0 CD which has 8.51 on it, partitioning the drive and on the first reboot I see "root drive?".
Disabling the internal ZIP-Drive and using only one hard drive (master) and or another single smaller drive does not change anything.

...perhaps the jumpers on the internal dvd-drive...?

What source for the media did you use? An actual disc or an image? I have no experience with 1.0. If possible, I'd try to use 1.2v3. It's the latest update and I know for a fact the installer on the garden works since I have used it. I doubt that there's any real difference in the installation from 1.0, but it would remove one area of question entirely.

If you have an actual factory disc and want to use that, though, I understand. I know Rhapsody can be weirdly picky about CD and DVD drives. I would think it might be an issue there. I've read that it is more open to varying models of CD drive than DVD, so if you have a compatible CD drive you can drop in to try, that could help. Jumpers are also possibly an issue. Make sure they're set to master. I don't think cable select works on a B&W, but I could be wrong. Even if it's supposed to, I wouldn't depend on it. Is it a rev 1?

I tried every possible jumper-setting with the DVD-Drive and the harddrive... I can not fix this issue. Seems to be an incompatibility with the drives.
