I have had this problem since at least OS X 10.10.3 when running Safari on my late 2009 i7 iMac. For the last few months I have been using the fix mentioned by superduperultra and the computer hasn't frozen since. Just this week I got an email from an Apple engineer saying that this bug had been fixed in macOS 10.12.5 (as of build 16F71b). Since updating I have reenabled accelerated drawing in Safari, now I'll just wait and see if the problem really has been fixed.

Thanks for the update headlessmike, i reenable it too and see if it fixes it for me too.

Would be nice if the bug was properly fixed because even though there was a fix for Safari, if i made an app that used WKWebView the app would cause my iMac to freeze anyway so, yeah, fingers cross (for the 192373:th time)

I just realized the most recent posts are not posted up front. Great to hear it may have been fixed. I'll upgrade tonight and report back, since I've had to reboot more than once a day.

Ok, sure, the topic was a little bit of a clickbait because we cant actually fix this ourself but we CAN contact Apple, or atleast all of us that is experience this issue can atleast send our feedback to:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/safari.html

This is getting very frustrating, several times per day i need to force reboot 2 of my Macs (Late 2009 iMac and the latest rMBP), the only Mac i have that is not freezing when i am using Safari is a early 2008 MBP, kinda weird, the oldest Mac i have works flawlessly in El Cap.

I have seen several threads about this issue in various forums, there is one active thread about it on Macrumors and several replies about ut in the El Cap bug thread so i am not alone.

The bug is kinda weird because the Safari freezes the computer, kinda, the music still plays, the videos still plays and i can move my pointer but it does not register ANY mouseclicks/taps.

So, everyone that has this problem & don´t have send some feedback to Apple, please do it, explain the issue and your hardware setup.

Give it a try. One week in and I haven't had a single freeze. Still too cautious to call it fixed though.

Same here, no freeze for a week so far but yeah, Apple have fooled me before so i am also very cautious to call it fixed ;)

I didn't have this issue until I updated to Sierra 10.12.4. I used Firefox for a day, but I'm really not a fan. Tried this fix in Safari, and problem seems to have vanished! The Freeze happened in only a couple of sites with lots of graphics, but was very repeatable. Glad this worked. Many Thanks.

I have reversed these changes I made, and all seems to be well. So appears to be fixed. I did have a hardware change however. I went from a GTX 780 to a GTX 1080.

I am gonna test out High Sierra as soon as it is available in my region (hopefully within a couple of hours), i hope the devs did not fork the software into High Sierra before the bugfix was implemented (or forgot to re-implemented the fix into High Sierra)

Hate to say it, but even after the latest update (10.12.5, NOT high Sierra) the crashes are still happening. So not fixed in my book. :-(

Sorry to hear that brianvh, 10.12.5 fixed my iMac and no freezes so far on High Sierra. Seems like the bug is fixed for us 2009 iMac users so its probably a device specific feature flag bugfix. Bad luck for you the brian

After a couple years of this issue on my 2009 I finnaly got it to go away. One day my graphics card just pooped out. I watched a lot of video about baking your graphics adapter to refloat the solder. I had nothing to loose so I thought, what the hell. Well after baking my graphics and replacing all the thermal past... not only did it fix my graphics card but I also haven't had a single safari freeze ever since. Its been months and I just barley updated to high sierra, so it wasn't that.

So just an FYI to people who can't figure this problem out... its probably an early symptom of a graphics adapter failure. This actually makes sense, because I was much more consistent on web sites with a lot of graphic rendering and videos.

For me it was a hardware issue since it would begin to show artifacts in 3D games, I had the AMD ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 and I baked it in the oven but it never lasted for more than a couple of days until the issue came back. I eventually replaced the card with a AMD Radeon HD 6970M which worked perfectly for months until I eventually sold the iMac.

Best computer I ever had, I felt that High Sierra would be the last update it would receive anyway.

Very happy to report that upgrading to High Sierra totally fixed my freeze issues. I held off for a long time because I had some crucial software and numerous deadlines, but the software survived the upgrade. Haven't had to reboot ever since, and it's been weeks.

Not sure High Sierra would help those with hard disks, I'm totally SSD.

Safari on my My 2011 Mac freezeswhen clicking links on the internet but a forced delet of Safari provides a temporary freeze until Y crank up Safari again and click in too many links. Google Chrome is not a problem. If this keeps up I will go ack to Google Chrome. I am on 10.13.4 (can't go any higher).
