Macbook air/ Sims 2

Hi, I have the Sims 3 on my :apple: MacBook Air, its playable but my computer gets very hot and the fan gets noisy. SimCity however is completely unplayable and the graphics don't load. I understand that the MacBook Air isn't a gaming computer but I'd love to purchase the Sims 2 app. Will it run ok, has anyone downloaded it on their Air? Thanks in advance :)

What model MBA do you have? I think there's the list of supported graphics adaptors on their website.

For what it's worth, my MBP gets pretty noisy and warm too and it's listed as supported. I would think most would unless you have a very high end Mac. It's a pretty intense game, not like browsing the web or making a spreadsheet.

It's a MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2011). Is it safe to continue to play when it gets warm and noisy? I always feel like it might blow up on me!

It's doing its job of cooling itself when noisy as I imagine you know. You don't need to worry about it blowing up, catching fire or anything like that. It will shut itself off to protect against damage if it does get too hot.

But as has been recommended in other MR forums, it would be a reasonable investment to buy some kind of "cooling pad" for any laptop that starts running hot due to certain "intensive use" apps.

If someone can afford to buy a MacBook Air, they can afford to buy a cooling pad.

Simply go to Google Search, type the words "macbook air cooling pad" and there you go.

(and the above was directed more at Samantha, not you Harry)

That is a good suggestion. If I owned a Macbook I would want one of those just to help keep the heat down. That's always a good thing.

According to everymac.com you have a HD 3000 Video Card which, according to Aspyr, is supported to play The Sims 2: Super Collection. You should be fine... but having a larger screen should make things a lot more enjoyable.

Sorry, but I thought these had been proven to be a waste of money. MacBooks usually have their vents towards the sides and top, so unless all that's being block it really isn't helping much. I left my 2006 MacBook on my bed or used a pillow for 6 years if it wasn't directly on my lap or a table. The same for my MBP.

If you want something that'll keep your lap away from the MB, look more for a flat hard surface. Don't waste money on something that actively cools with fans or anything like that.

Actually, my experiences tell the opposite: I have a cooling pad for my MacBook Pro and using it definitely helps to keep it cooler. When I have my MBP for instance on a flat, wooden table without the cooling pad, the temperature idles around 45 °C at about 2000 rpm fan speed when doing nothing to stressing (e.g. word processing, web browsing, etc.). With cooling pad, this temperature is around 10 °C lower.

Similar when running games or similar taxing programs: without cooling pad, temperature quickly ramps to something around 90 °C, in part with fans speeds about 5000 rpm. With cooling pad, I rarely get temperatures about 80 °C and fan speed also remains lower.

@Aspyr-Blair

After SimCity 4 and The Sims 2, are there any plans to bring the original Sims Complete Collection game back to life with similar improvements?
I haven't been able to play since I upgraded to 10.7 (the game needed Rosetta, but was playable)

I'm sorry to say Fighter that we dont currently have any plans for it. If it was as simple as a conversion to modern hardware, I think we would be game and chase the license...but its absolutely not. Once we compiled the code for Sims 2 to work on newer systems, it ran at a crawl...like literally a slide show. So we decided to start from scratch and completely redo the port. I think the results speak for themselves and we are very proud...but it was a TON of work.

I've looked for the folder for The Sims Super Collection in applications, and I don't see it. It's just not there, any suggestions?

does the game work with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M?

i would really love to buy the game since, until now, i only played it on windows but my macbook pro has a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M and i'm not sure if the sims 2 super collection works with that. any help?

It says which graphic cards are compatible in the App Store. Yours is not compatible.

Just bought the game 2 days ago. Was impressed it could run quite smooth on my rMBP 2012 GT650M. Kinda sad the game couldn't be optimised for the Mac Pro's dual GPUs. I am running 1920x1080 on my nMP and had suffered quite a few frame rate drops specially when it's raining (gives me an overall impression that the D700 sucks). But nonetheless this was a great port. Hopefully more games can be ported over to macs properly in the future. :D P.S Just a question, are you guys able to make use of the dual GPUs supported by the Mac Pros to run more demanding games? (Crossfire in Windows).

Its possible, however the use case is so small it isnt currently worth the effort. OpenCL optimization reaches more consumers and its something we implemented in Civ V.

Does anyone know where to find the saved games?

I did a clean install when I upgraded to Yosemite and have a TM backup of my original install. I tried moving a folder from ~/Library/Containers/com.aspyr.sims2.appstore and I still have the default game. Am I missing something?

It's not that big of a loss, I had just started the game and played a few days with a default family. I just would rather not start from scratch.
