What I really love is the form factor. I had graphics card failures both on my 2010 and late 2013 12 cpu systems. When the 2013 failed I just put it in a shopping bag and took it to the Apple store. My 2010 is a b$%$% to move.

Hmm, let's see. 2013, only place to get GPU is at Apple or used "pulls" on Ebay, so it has to go to Apple store. (Used "D700/7970" is $1,000)

2006-2012 MP, remove GPU- replace GPU (lighter than the nMP, and less likely to get machine damaged) Used 7970 is about $200-400

And there are a variety of vendors selling the cards...

If you can't sell the 5,1 via shipping, put it on CL. Cash deal, no returns, no worries about shipping.

Done.

+1 AMEN!!!

Cheers

What did you tell them? Lol

I can agree with almost everything, but actually the 2013 MP is quite fast, and not much improvements have been made since then. The dual D700 produce 7TFlops, that is a lot, and for FCPX is enough.
They need to update to add TB3, USB3.1, DP1.4, a faster SSD, and a newer CPU. But performance wise, is not changing much in real life usage.
They could also reduce the prices, the pricing scheme is really tied to 2013 CPU prices, it doesn't make sense on 2016.
-4 cores, 16GB ram, D300 equiv (at least 6 TFlops), 512GB, $2499
-6 cores, 32GB ram, D500 equiv (at least 9 TFlops), 512GB, $3499
-8 cores, 64GB ram, D700 equiv (at least 12 TFLops), 1TB, $4499

Valid points. I have two Apple Stores within 2 miles so taking it to a store isn't a major inconvenience. Waiting the 4 days is. I always get AppleCare so I'm tied to the store. Both of my MacPros, the 2010 that I'm selling and the nMp, have been in for repair at least once and had parts replaced so AppleCare has paid for itself several times over.

In a remote location self repair makes sense economically and practically.

To engineer a state-of-the-art new form factor Mac Pro (no clutter on our desktops anymore) with plenty of options to upgrade (CPU/GPU/RAM) & expand (PCIe) the machine as-is! Lets me say a cMP 3.0 or THE COMPUTER OF THINGS...

In the new tower thread I made a similar comment - don't bring back the cMP, make a better box.

Be careful what you ask for! ;)

For the enormous box that it was in, the cMP was rather limited. Too much space was designed for cooling the nuclear fires of the PowerPC CPUs, and everything else was compromised.

Ask for a better tower, not "return" of the old tower.

For example, the MP5,1's PCIe support is:
  • PCIe 2.0 x16 (used by GPU)
  • PCIe 2.0 x16
  • PCIe 2.0 x4 (bandwidth for x4 slots shared)
  • PCIe 2.0 x4
A current Dell T7910 has:
  • PCIe 3.0 x4 (x16 mechanical)
  • PCIe 3.0 x16
  • PCIe 2.0 x4 (x16 mechanical)
  • PCIe 3.0 x16
  • PCI 32-bit
  • PCIe 3.0 x16 (only active with dual processors)
  • PCIe 3.0 x16 (only active with dual processors)
The Dell also has:
  • 16 DIMM slots for up to 512 GiB RAM (256 GiB with one processor)
  • Dual optical bays
    • One 5.25" full size, SATA 3
    • One slimline (laptop) SATA 3
  • 8 internal drives
  • NVMe SSD drives

Obviously you're not using Apple computers for anything important. It's pretty obvious this is just anti-Apple bait anyways. Either way, do yourself a favour and move on. Nobody here will miss you, and Apple certainly wouldn't notice or care if you made the move.
I am also to the stage where it is time to buy a new desktop. I am waiting to see if they come through with some real updated hardware. It just feels like Apple is abandoning anything but portable devices. I still have an Apple II, 6220, couple of iMacs, MacBook, etc. down in the basement. So I have been with them for quite awhile. My current laptop already went to a wintel machine (Windows deleted and Slackware installed). I would hate to do the same with my desktop.

Since Apple is not willing to remake a glorious Tower i modded my MP a little :p I converted the boring side panel to a fancy transparent one:
