Sorry I haven't read the whole thread, so please excuse me if I am repeating anything that has already been said.

The iMacs body is very small and all the computer components are tightly packed together. The only vents for cooling are the speakers, on top of the Power plug, and at the top of the iMac for heat to rise. The iMac already builds up a lot of heat, I am running a Mid 2007 (the first Alu iMac) 2.8GHz iMac, I'm having my fans running up at about 2000RPM and my CPU at 144Fº.

Putting desktop components into the iMac will simply cause overheating. Though, the Hard drive is a desktop component, and that is the only desktop feature of the iMac besides the large 24" screen (or 20 for some). Try putting your hands on the top of your iMac after a few ours of use and you'll see what I'm talking about;);)

Ya, I think so too. Apple can either build a beautiful computer and try to control heat with low cost or they can go fancy and made it real expensive, which no one will buy. I bet you can put fancy water cooling in iMacs, but that might drive the cost too high and people will just get the Mac Pro with screen. And I think keeping the iMac 24" empty inside helps heat dissipation...

No-one uses Linux as a gaming platform, don't know about graphic designing. And you can't buy a computer with Linux installed. ATI writes a lot better drivers than nVidia does

Who said anything about gaming? I just want to have a graphic card that works under Linux. Getting ATI crap to run well is almost impossible. If you want to have dual screen and other goodies, better get yourself Nvidia. On OS X, Nvidia drivers work rather well; never had any problems, played COD4 and other games. So what's the problem? Everyone keeps on saying that Nvidia drivers for OS X are rubbish, but can anyone say why exactly?

ATI = more performance sometimes than nvidia at the cost of buggy drivers.

The worst marriage in computing history was when ATI and AMD merged.

Being that passive coolers are available for full size HD 4850 desktop cards I would imagine the limiting factor here is not the ability to cool the card but to develop a power supply for the iMac that could support everything inside if a desktop 4850 were used.
