The power supplies for the portables and iPod dock. They just stick out from the wall too far, especially here in the UK once we stick a bleedin' great 3 pin plug on it

That was a nice design idea. Personally, i do not know why people hated them. OK, i was using them with small hands (only 7 when i got one) but kids loved them. They were a nice looking design: I actually have one as an ornament

Must look really nice, next to your pyramid of beer cans and your framed magazine cover featuring pregnant Britney Spears...

Oh, just thought of another thing - flippy little port covers on the 3400c, which had very tiny hinges which snapped off very easily. This laptop had them on the ADB port and on the back plane. Mine both disappeared within a few weeks.

I'd have to say the eMac, the B&W PM color scheme (come on, its a Pro machine!), the puck mouse, Flower Power & Dalmatian iMac flavors, the continuance of the one click mouse into the 2000's, the Mac Portable, and the White border around the Tibook topcase.

*takes a breath* I used to be a Hardcore PC guy, and these were some of my grievances.

Hard to say, of course I look back now and think the G3 iMacs were fugly, or the previous beige systems. But back in the day I liked the look of the iMac, despite not wanting one then (OS9 was really not for me).

I would like Apple to bring out a slim, portable bluetooth keyboard though. Just take off the 12" PB's keyboard, stick a battery and BT in and bam. But that isn't for here :)

The G3 iBook clamshells (ie toilet seats) were the ugliest ever to come out of Cupertino. They were so smitten with the success of the iMac G3s that they blindly parlayed the design over to the laptops with aesthetically disastrous consequences.

I love those, I still look around ebay with the quiet but never realized intention of purchasing one. Not because it will ever be of any use to me, but just because i want to look at it.

Anyway I also vote the mighty mouse. I had the displeasure of owning two in my day. Cheaply made, costs too much, and after a month nothing worked. I gave both away.

And maybe the old cinema displays too, i hated the bezel on those.

Ditto. I just recently picked up a blueberry clamshell, managed to install Tiger on it (actually runs with 128mb of ram), planning on using it for datalogging my car.

I love my mighty mouse, haven't had any of the problems some people complain about.

I actually liked the hockey puck mouse. When I bought my first "current" mac, an iMac 400DV, it came with it. Awkward at first but I found it comfortable and easy to use.

I use an eMac at work, it's a reliable machine that's still running smoothly after tons of use. The thread title is worst designs, not ugliest ;)

As for the Cube, if you think it's a bad design you've most likely never used one. They're pure elegance. Anyone who thinks the Mini is a modern day Cube, just remember that Minis need a damn putty knife to get inside.

As for worst designs, I'm gonna say the G4 iMac (desklamp). Have you ever seen one with a monitor that didn't sag on one end? I was never a fan of the half-basketball base either.

Yes I agree with Puck Mouse and Mighty Mouse. damn apple just can't seem to figure out how to build a mouse.

Then again M$ can't build a decent OS and their mice are great.

But my choice is the current iMac as butt fugly, then again I'm just upset I'll never be able to buy a new lampy iMac

In terms of aesthetic design, the iMac G4 is lovely.

In terms of practical design, it is far less successful. But really, that is Apple's whole iMac line for you from Day 1.

I personally think the iMac G4 was a great design, making it so that if your monitor conked out you weren't completely screwed with the Mini DVI port.

(I realize the later G3's had the VGA port, but I never managed to get one working.)

*tries again*

Am I gonna be the local That Guy who says that the 20th Anniversary Mac was one ugly beast?

Cause it was.

Other notable uglies for me: mirror-bay doors G4, hippy iMacs, Peforma boxes. Yep. usual cases.

The Cube, btw, was a gorgeous machine and revolutionary concept. Loved it then, love it now. Beautiful. Keep in mind that, even considering the role of the iMac at the time, that there simply were not computers on the market that were that gorgeous, small, and powerful.
It was incredible. Shimmering like a diamond on store shelves everywhere.

Or nowhere. which is probably why it sold so terribly.

Just the opposite. As a purely aesthetic exercise, the G4 iMac is not very successful, especially in the larger screen sizes. But functionally it's just about perfect. Everybody who sits down to use one, knows immediately that they can grasp the transparent edge of the display and adjust it to their needs. Any object that can communicate its function this clearly can't be called a practical failure. In fact, this is a good working definition of success in human engineering!

By aesthetic, I literally mean "to look at". Hence all the people on the other thread wetting themselves in excitement and wonder.

By practical, I mean in terms of user upgrading and expansion - it's just another one-size-should-fit-all Apple solution.

When you have a 1 size fits all solution you end up with 1 size that fits no one. Imac is nice but I wont ever buy another all in one, its like having your vcr or dvd built into your Tv. Seems nice at first until something breaks.

ALL in ones have Killed Macs Marketshare in my view. But what do I know its not like Steve is calling me for my opinion as IJ has implied.:D

The puck mouse used to make my hand have a spack attack after using it for an hour or two, and for a while I had to use one 8 hours a day at work. Horrendous!

The keyboard that went with it was pretty gash too. It wasn't a big enough change for your mind to register it and to behave differently (i.e laptop and desktop keyboards), but it was different enough for me to miss pretty much every key I ever wanted to press.

That's about it for me. I've never had any real beef with any other products than that, but I've only been using Macs since the first iMacs.

I'm not a big fan of the G3 iMac.

i believe eletric code says something about an electric outlet about every 6'.

12' (on center) on walls, so that no point on a wall is more than 6' away (2006 Int'l Residential Code, E3801.2.1) Just happened to have it right by me.

I mean the same thing by aesthetics. I always thought the G4 iMac looked rather awkward, particularly in the larger screen sizes. Some think it's downright funny-looking. You've heard all the remarks, I'm sure.

By practical, I mean in terms of user upgrading and expansion - it's just another one-size-should-fit-all Apple solution.

I can't entirely agree. People who don't like a particular size should buy a different size. They should not buy one and complain that it's not another.
