I voted for the iMac G5 simply because it wasn't nearly as elegant and beautiful as the G4 when it first appeared. Also, the G5 models (with exception of updated iSight model) were very thick and ugly looking IMO. With the Intel transition, they started to look much cleaner than before.

However, I can understand why people would vote the iMac G3. Some simply because OS 8 and 9 were so terrible, and others because the technology is outdated by todays standards and underpowered. 10 years ago, however, it was a revolutionary product.

I voted iMac G5.

Many of the people voting here are simply looking at the design aspect of the iMac family and for me, the iMac G4 wins hands down (as the best, not worst).

But having owned an iMac G5 from the day it was released (well, after the MONTH it took to ship) I can safely say that it was the worst Mac I have ever encountered. I had endless problems with it, largely to do with over heating. I thought it was great that I could pop the back panel off and access all the internals - however this just made it even more of a dust trap, driving up the temperatures once again.

I remember in the summer when I was trying to watch .264 encoded movies and praying that it would not overheat and send itself to sleep.

The iMac G5 was the reason I bought an Intel iMac on release day. What a breath of fresh air!

Yeah and remember all those people screaming "OMGAZDS POWERBOOK G5 TODAY!!!!", well stuffing a G5 in a PowerBook would have made for many lawsuits due to overheating...

As for iMac G5, quite a few of them had the blowing capacitor problem. eMac had it as well, but luckily mine escaped that.

even though apple would never go backwards - an Intel Core 2 CPU in the G4 Dome design

Thirded here....

Just waiting for some clever modder to get a mini to fit in the case. I love my 20" g4 to bits and dread the day I ever have to let it go. I just didn't get the later Imacs - How do you adjust the screen for vertical height?

The only thing that annoys me with an all-in-one design are speakers. They're rarely adequate for the job so lets just leave the damn things out!

all imacs have been all in ones, it did not start with the g5's lol

I was refering to how the G4 had to actual computer under it (in the dome) and the screen above it, then the G5 made it all fit inside one unit that was hovering by the stand.

;)
Though I guess the G3 was the same way, but I think it is obvious what Im talking about...

I'm probably the only person on this site who thinks that the G4 iMac is the ugliest iMac released. I think even the eMac was much nicer looking.

That's why I voted for it.

i dont know about the worst

but i think the best is the latest one.
it is great ... especially the high end model

Come to think more into it I think the Aluminum ones are the worst apple is getting very cheap putting the TN panels in the 20" I remember when apple put the very best in their computers beautiful screens and high end components now I just don't know anymore. I realize the design looks nice but seriously looks aren't everything, I would rather have an "OK" looking computer with a beautiful screen and will last forever.

If you don't like the cheap 20", there is alway the more expensive 24". They did this amazing thing where they put the better LCD panel in the more expensive machine. ;)

Yeah that's great you figured out sarcasm. But guess what I want the 20" I don't have the room for the 24". Then what, I would even pay more for the 20 with a better screen. They did offer a better screen before now they are just being cheap.

They did the exact same thing with the old white 17". It had the cheaper panel, and the 20" and 24" had the better ones. Apple just bumped up the bar for the "low end". Does that make the 17" white iMac the worst one then?

Of course they are being cheap. They are reacting to the demands of the market.

The g4 was the best and the first white g5 was the worst. The g4 was my first ever Mac and I almost wish I never got rid of it in favor of the G5. Maybe it's because the harddrive crashed on my G5 a year ago and the motherboard just crapped out on Sunday :-(

But my Intel iMac comes in Friday, maybe I'll love it, looking forward to intel.

That swivel screen G4 was just plain sexy IMO.

That's not what bugs me its that on the more expensive 20" They easily could have offered a Better 20" panel even S-PVA would have been better.

I can't say there has been a bad design, the first once was iconic and has played a large part in Apples turn around.

The G4 was a stunning design, the G5 took it further... I remember explaining to my girfriend for the first time that the monitor was the computer. It took a while to convince her. Now she has a 24" White iMac.

Perhaps the ALU was the least amazing simply because of its similaritys to the White intel and G5 mac form factor. But I don't think its a bad design in fact I will be getting one soon (fingers crossed).

well how is the imac g3 not .. and im only saying this because my brothers imac g5 blows away my macbook and there both 1.83ghz and iunno i like ppc because of there looks and i dont know i just like them

Probably you don't have enough RAM in your MacBook. My Core Duo MacBook smokes my G5 iMac so much it stays in the box most of the time. (Unless the MacBook has a hardware issue  )

Yup, yup, I hear you. When they make design decisions, there will always be some who it works for and some who it does not.
