There is Hope for iMac 27" Display - Black Spots/Smudges/Dust in the display fixed!

I have decided as i live next to a busy road, which must be causing no end of particulates to float in my windows, to buy a HEPA filter and place it in the room in which my mac and tv sit. I don't smoke anymore (thank god. I gave up this year in april after my beloved grandma was diagnosed with terminal smoking related lung cancer. she died last month), but I do get concerned at the thought of tiny bits of exhaust, dust, pollen, pet dander, and other pollutants getting to stuck to my beloved iMacs innards. I reckon the 50 quid investment in an filter will pay dividends with regards to environmental dust. Ill soon be able to tell if it makes a difference as at the present i have to scrape my PS3 vents clear of dust every month or so.
I believe this is not dust!

That's about exactly what mine looks like. It's in the same area too. I'm guessing it's some sort of condensation issue. The monitor seems fine right when I start it up in the morning, but as it gets warmer, that stain appears. And this doesn't seem to be the glass. I'm fairly certain it's the base matte screen behind the glass.

I can attest that the dark spots are simply dust that has collected on the LED display. I followed the procedures outlined here and every blemish/spot I had is now gone ! (Most of them were in the right upper corner). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they don't come back- I sealed it up pretty good, so hopefully no dust can re-enter. Thanks for the information in this post !

This kind of thing is really making me second guess an iMac purchase. I've been so excited, but then I see this kind of crap... sigh.
I've created a petition on this and the staining and grey smudge issue. I'm also a current owner of the late 2009 27" iMac and have a yellow tinge on the lower third of my screen. Just recently, I started experiencing a stain that appears on the right edge of the screen.

You do realize there are thousands of other people with no issue right? Not to mention it doesn't just happen to Macs. My friend has this on his Asus monitors.

FYI I have a 27" iMac at home and one at work, and it's happened to both. So I don't agree that it only happens to a small number of them. Perhaps if in a NASA clean room
I had mine done under warranty this summer at 1.5 years old. Although it's still fine now, I'm guessing I'll probably have to have a another replacement screen before the Apple Care runs out next year.

Lmao! I knew you'd probably think that after I said my parents Mac was like that.
That being said it was like that out of the box, and they never noticed it but I did and they said they didn't want to exchange it because it didn't bother them.
I'm sure if you get one it'll be fine.

Thanks for spreading the word! And ya, I thought maybe we should move this to the next level, since clearly, replacing the screen doesn't solve the problem. I'm just wondering how long it will take for other iMac owners to start noticing all their interesting new screen anomalies.

Hi guys!
I think i have the grey smudges on a new iMac 27' mid 2011 (sandy bridge 3.4 with ATI 6970).
Bought on august 2011, had to return it after just a month due to Apple's seagate hard drive recall, which they replaced.
Now as you can see in the pictures, grey spots start to develop on my LCD panel.
Nice going apple thanks!

first of all I'd like to thank you for your posts 'n pics. Really.
I have an iMac 27" quad core which is fabulous except for this silly design flaw which apple shoud REALLY address (mine was a full spec 27", > 3'000 euros. This is really annoying). I'm about to ask for my SECOND replacement (3rd display). ;(
I was thinking about trying to figure out a more permanent solution, rather than cleaning my display.
I have never disassembled it myself, I'm probably not skilled enough to do so without damaging it.
So my plans are: get a brand new display and attempt to address tre problem BEFORE the dust gets in there in the 1st place.
Do you think there may be a way of sealing the panel properly ? I was thinking about letting the new display sit in a dry environment (don't want humid air sealed in there) and then ... maybe applying silicone all 'round the edges ?
Would that be a stupid idea stupid for some reason ??? Have you thought of any other way to get rid of the problem permanently ?

Most of times, this "smudged display" problem on iMac is caused by heat. Especially comes from GPU heatsink on upper right corner. And that's where most smudge comes from.
The worst part is .. it is growing like cancer overtime. It's not affecting how the computer works, but obviously distractive and knowing it's there make you feel bad every time you work on iMac.
Apple can keep replace the display as many times, but the problem will keep coming back as long display is being heated by GPU heatsink. The least you can do is make sure you don't do any GPU intensive task such as gaming, working on 3d CAD or some sort.
Ever see when your router/modem hung on wall, and months after you check them back and there is blackened stain on it? Well .. you know, it's the burn out mark. Same thing happens with the display. Only you can't repaint LCD, the only solution is replace the whole panel.
So .. yeah I have to keep coming back every few months just to have my panel replaced. Bad Apple. No more iMac for me in the future. I would bit the bullet get a MacPro. Or if Apple decides to dump MacPro then I'll go with Hackintosh solution. As much as I hate it, still better than have a computer which needs display replacement regularly.

So is it the actual LCD panel or the clear "plexiglass" pane in front of the panel?

Mine (27" quad core late 2009) is affected. One of my clients bought *SIX* for his office. ALL are affected. ALL of them.
Si I guess this IS a big design issue.
Which means it's no use if Apple send you a replacement unit as a goodwill stature. As long as it's an iMac and it has the same design. This will keep coming back all over again.
I wish I went with MacPro.
