iPod They're selling iPods with songs preloded now

There's an interesting twist to this: Currently, the courts have struck down the Canadian recording medi levy on hard disk and solid state media players. If it is reinstated, part of the levy languages specifies "Blank media or media that has never been recorded on", so putting a song onto an iPod may provide a defence against the levy because the media is no longer blank.
its a good thing that apple isnt doing this, because Apple Corps would have a definate win on thier hands with it came to their lawsuit that we know they would file
Surely though this idea suffers from a serious flaw. You can't download any more music from your computer without wiping the preloaded songs at least, not without a third-party hack. Or am I just missing something?
What if you don't have a computer or don't have the internet? Many people may not be able to afford a computer or internet, but they may be able to purchase an ipod. The market is probably small for this, but I'm sure its there.
This must be the sort of thing that idiot celebrities like Paris Hilton and Melanie Griffith use... I mean, seriously, can you see either of these nitwits actually USING a computer? That, or they pay some techie to buy their CDs, rip them, and then copy them onto an iPod.
This is similar to the services that will take your CDs and load them up on your iPod for a fee. Fine if you don't have a lot of time, I guess, but really a waste of money.
Also, if you already have a ton of CDs, it's really a waste, since you're repurchasing the music, potentially.

terrible idea, i agree, but maybe not so much with a shuffle. some band released their album on shuffles last week (i forget the name, check it out on iPod lounge if youre interested) and charged the price of the album + the shuffle. i think that's a good gift idea, since the shuffles are inexpensive, get someone a shuffle they can use along with their favorite band's new album or something... only problem is you lose the songs once connected to a computer.
When you connect your iPod to your Mac or PC, you're presented with a dialogue window asking if you want to link the iPod in with the music library of that particular computer. Click no, and you can't add or delete songs off the iPod but if you click yes, it deletes the music already on the iPod and replaces it with your computer's music library. So, you can't add more music to your preloaded iPod without losing the music already on there at least, not without using third party software.foisGras said:
Basically, it's all part of Apple keeping the record labels happy by making it harder to pirate music. As other posters have mentioned, a work around would be provide you with a CD backup, or maybe putting a copy of the music on the iPod as files which wouldn't be overwritten when you link up.

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of the iPod? Half its allure is how easy it
is to use with iTunes; just sync up and go. And you have to get online to order from that site anyway, so you have some sort of access to a computer- just head over to a friend's house and use their computer. It's cheaper, and your friend will get the songs on their itunes, too

I guess everyone has broadband then, so it's a stupid idea.
Nobody has OS9 machines that can't access iTMS, or dial up accounts anymore. Huh.
I did an install of OSX for a client on "Broadband Lite", not even dialup. This is a Cable service limited to nominal 500 MBs I think. The Apple Software Update took HOURS to download OS10.3.8 - then failed. It ended up being faster to drive home, download it and burn it to CD, drive back, and install it.
And that's on the entry level broadband. Would have been completely impossible in dialup. Given the choice, would I pay 39 cents a song to skip a half-hour dialup download? Especially if I was having to pay long distance to the ISP or on a per-minute ISP plan or satellite Internet?

curiously enough, one of the things on paris's to-do list found on her hacked sidekick was "buy a lap top" although i doubt she would have any idea how to use it except just turn it on.clayjohanson said:

im sure there are people out there who just dont get it and would rather pay someone to do it for them than figure it out themselves, its kinda sad but there are people that technology challenged out there
