THEY NEVER MENTION IT IN ADS!! I am buying this phone thought that it would be like Pixel 2 and now i am stucked. I cant return it due to the return policy in my country and i cant even upgrade to XS. Thanks Apple for this great experience!

It can't use a second camera to detect depth so it's all AI powered. Technically, they can upgrade this AI and train it with new objects.

Although this was fairly common knowledge you're right in that they should have advertised the difference a little better. Hopefully it will get more functionality in the future.

After few years, we won’t even need cameras for photos. AI will randomly generate an image for us and we would have to make do with whatever image is displayed using neurons from your own head.

Yeah i know what you means but since Apple advertise like it is capable of doing Portrait mode automatically i am thinking it is like Pixel 2/3 which use AI to calculate, they should have mentioned that, i felt like being cheated it felt so bad. Use Apple for 10 years and this is the first time i felt that way.

Nearly every review I read has told us about this issue so it shouldn’t be much of a shock...
This. Also, this has to be click bait as the OP and I differ greatly on the definition of a serious issue.

Portrait pictures of animals/plants are not. While things like the screen falling off the housing, lack of cellular connectivity, or phone/battery exploding in my hands, are.

If you doing research before buying you may as well buy android. You cannot expect every apple user to read reviews before purchase, people used to buy apple products because they "just work".

Ignoring the hyperbole in the title, and the fact it seems you unfortunately missed this topic in the reviews, there does seem to be a serious issue here. And that is .... why can't you return the phone?
i live in Malaysia and the return policy here is you cant return the phone once you remove it from the box..amazing policy...

Ouch! I was so sure Apple would have better policies that I checked. I was wrong.

Don't use portrait mode on your dog. Issue solved.

You will probably have to sell your iPhone since you can't return it. You will only take a small loss since it's still in mint condition.

Should have done more in depth research before you purchased. There are tons of YouTube videos on this.

Ah. While that sucks about the return policy; to me and most others in these forums that is still not a serious issue for anyone. If you love the XR in all of its glory except the lack of portrait mode for your dog and that is the only issue... like others said just wait for one of a half dozen or more apps soon to come out to circumvent the inability via the Apple Camera app.

Sure it’s another app but I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker or justifies a return especially since every review I’ve watched and read for the last 3+ weeks said portrait mode only works on people with the XR and if you wanted it for your pets to get the XS/XSMax/8+

I research everything I before I buy. I don’t care what it is. It’s my responsibility to know what I’m buying.

All of which you stated and not sure how this is a ‘Serious issue.’ My interpretation is a serious issue would be like ‘batteries exploding’ that occurred with Samsung Note 7, not a Portrait mode feature.

I mean that's true. That phone was actually banned from planes LOL.

Your thread title should be changed to "I bought an 800 dollar phone without first looking into what it can and can't do.". I've watched tons of reviews and not a single one failed to mention that portrait mode is only for humans.

I don’t know anyone who would just assume something called portrait mode would be for anything other than people.

The very definition of portrait refers to people.
