I don’t know anyone who would just assume something called portrait mode would be for anything other than people.

The very definition of portrait refers to people.

From reading around on the Interwebs, the Xr does construct a depth map of an image, based on AI rather than the use of two offset cameras as in the XS/Max, and saves that data with the image. It is not as detailed or accurate as the depth map generated by the XS/Max, but can be utilized by 3rd party photo apps such as Halide - just as a previous poster mentioned.

just for a forum best practices POV, why wouldn't your post title be more like " iPhone XR - portrait mode only works on humans?"
There's a really bad youtuber who makes videos with clickbait-y titles named Sakitech who made a video with a similar title. Something like THE XR HAS A MAJOR PROBLEM! And the problem turned out to be the screen resolution and PPI that any intelligent consumer would have known beforehand (if they were interested in the tech).

If it makes you feel better, you can use the front camera for portrait objects (non-human). Though framing the shot might be challenging.

Just got my iPhone XR last few days, and i discovered a serious problem. iPhone XR cant use portrait mode on an object (Dogs, flowers, food etc), ONLY HUMAN ARE ALLOW!!! THEY NEVER MENTION IT IN ADS!! I am buying this phone thought that it would be like Pixel 2 and now i am stucked. I cant return it due to the return policy in my country and i cant even upgrade to XS. Thanks Apple for this great experience!

That was made clear on most review videos before launch date.

This was well talked about before the release. Maybe you should have done some homework.

That’s great and all, but nothing in Apple’s advertising point to anything but taking portraits of people. I can technically use electricity to power a drill, but it’s not going to work if I choose to use a 9 volt battery.

I really don’t see the problem here.

Well if you think about it, portrait mode as a whole is used “more” on non people.

Pretty much every review online says so though. You gotta do your homework as a consumer.

Maybe you should have titled this "potential deal breaker" instead of "serious issue". Serious issue would be battery exploding or something to that effect.

Most who watched at least one review knew this. And many people aren't really that worried about it.

That’s what I’m getting at, it’s USED for more than what it’s explicitly *designed* for. The AI for portrait mode is specifically trained to look for people, not a sandwich.

I did research before XR launched, its not like everyone talk about this...i guess its my own fault then.
Welcome to macrumors where people are all knowing and never makes mistakes. Missing the fact that it’s only in reviews not from Apple. That’s not cool.

I realize it's not ideal, but since you can't return your phone, why not consider adapting and use the front-facing camera until a better solution comes along? I just took a wonderful bokeh portrait of my office stapler using my XR front camera. Worked great.

:)
