Thank you. That's a nice perk.

So, I decided to go with the Lumix ZS100. I wasn't planning on moving so quickly but my local shop is selling it with a $300 instant rebate. At about $400, I could not pass it up. I assume they are making room for the ZS200.

Thanks to every one for the input.
Since I was the one who suggested it, I really hope it works out well for you. That bigger sensor should really help when you want to print 11x14s, given the right subject 16x20 may even be a possibility. You'll even be able to digitally crop at least a little, which will in effect give you about a 500mm equivalent at the long end if you don't need to go to past 8x10 for a print. Looking forward to seeing some posts as you get acquainted with your new toy.

Have been considering this camera and the Lumix FZ1000M2 as a replacement for my ancient Kodak z915. I can afford the 1000 but not sure what the physical depth of the camera is with the lens retracted. Portability is absolutely crucial for my needs. Also not sure about the touch screen menus. Touchscreens and I do not peacefully co-exist, so I need to get my hands on one and see if the menus are easily navigable via buttons. If I end up with the ZS100, I am sure it will do the job nicely.

Because of the dealer rebate the only parameter I had to sacrifice is the length of the lens. Even that is not such a big deal because my two walking around lenses top out at 200 and 300.
I shop at Dodd Camera (doddcamera.com). If you want the ZS100, now would be the time to jump on their price.

The FZ1000 is on the bulky side, but it's not very heavy. You mainly get the gripped body feel with an electronic zoom. The Mark I didn't even have a touchscreen, so it was entirely dependent on buttons to navigate the menu, so I suspect that won't be an issue. Any Lumix I've owned that has a touchscreen, I've only used buttons and dials to navigate the menus. I turn off touch-focus and the like, as I don't need my nose interfering!

Thanks Darmok. That was pretty much what I was thinking and the bulk is a concern, however being able to use filters on rare occasions might swing the choice towards the bigger camera. Will be getting to the big city this week so hopefully can give both a whirl.

What about something like a Panasonic TZ-200 ? 15x optical zoom range, VF. A refurb would come in at the budget.

Or it’s cousin…. The Leica C-Lux - for the colours.

The TZ-200 seems to be well regarded and it is not much bigger than a RX100 so pocketable-ish (skinny jeans no chance, cargo pants or a jacket pocket for sure).

Thank you. I am waiting for my new ZS100 to arrive on Friday. They are sending it over from the Chicago store to Cleveland. I apparently got the last one in stock. The website now says that model is backordered.

I started reading the 2 manuals. This little thing is way more complicated than my D7000. I'm very excited.

lol

The heavy and bulky dSLR around my shoulders was a decisive factor to me: I decided to make the move to mirror less cameras.

And I believe that I won’t use a dSLR anymore. My first move was a Fujifilm Pro1 with a pancake 18mm lens. After two weeks I realised that this light and little fella would make best pictures than my dSLR.

Since then I’m using mirror less Fujifilm’s gear for every work. I’m looking forward to seeing how far the mighty ZS100 will make your mind… :D

If I didn't already have my delightful Sony RX100 VII I would definitely be tempted by the Leica C-Lux, as it sounds like a lovely, wonderful largish) pocketable (or tuck-in-the-purse) camera with a lot of power within it which can be readily accessed by those who know how to get the best from it!

I look back at my Fuji images (Xpro2 and X-H1) and at the time I was frustrated by the look from them in Lightroom. What I didn’t realise was that it was ONLY in Lightroom. I look back at them now that Lightroom has been fixed for trans files and I wonder what the hell I was thinking! Great cameras and wonderful lenses. Enjoy them.

I could have sent that reply to you. I too would have one if it weren’t for my RX100 collection. Jono Slack here in the UK tests Leicas and his review of the C-Lux in Cyprus certainly piqued my interest. Alas Scottish light is a lot weaker than that in the Mediterranean so I wonder how I would get on with the slower lens.

That did catch my eye, the slower lens......unfortunate, that, given the otherwise excellent features and functions of the camera! Well, since I am more than happy with my RX100 VII, as I was with her predecessors, I'll just stick with her. I am getting the impression that she may be the last of the RX100 line, too, as Sony seems to be going off in a somewhat different direction now, trying to appeal to vloggers with their new line of cameras which are more focused on shooting video than stills. I saw the other day where they've just released a second version of the one they first introduced last year. I forget what the model is called but it looks much like a cross between the RX100 and Sony's APS-C series of cameras.

I agree but how about this thought.... RX200 - APS-C sensor.... I am not basing this on any knowledge, just that the Panasonic LX 15 (I think) is the same size roughly as our pocket rockets and it gets a M4/3 in it. Maybe one day but yes I agree, the vlogging market seems to be the target for them right now.

IT'S HERE!!!!!!
It's also really small. Yes. I know. That's the idea.
I don't have huge hands but they're not small. It's going to take some time for me to figure out how to use those tiny buttons.
I figure I'll need a week or two before I'm satisfied with how well I understand and use it, and then I'll put up some pics.
I'm really excited.

Okay. Now that I'm in the right place.

Except for cropping and a bit of cloning, this is how they look out of the camera. I didn't adjust levels on any of them. The third one is a snap I included to show the color rendering.
