I knew there were two nooks, but I thought it was more one was color and one was black and white.

tbh, I never really investigated the nook all that much, given my apprehension with B&N's long term viability. This weekend is a tax free weekend here in Massachusetts, I may pick up the special offers kindle at my local best but/staples/target if its on sale.

While I missed the 20% coupon for the MBA last week, it seemed popular enough that amazon will run another similar offering as we get closer to Christmas. Plus as I stated it looks easier to hold, use and read then the iPad.

I like my iPad but its just not convenient to hold when taking the subway.

I share your concerns with B+N's long-term viability. That is certainly something to think about.

The Kindle is a dream device--a real pleasure to hold and read on trains, in lines, or just about anywhere really.

I recommend the same thing.

The touch screen Nook is much better than the Kindle 3 (I own both). It has less of those annoying page refreshes, and it's much more comfortable to hold. Also, I NEVER use the Kindle's keyboard, but YMMV. Plus, the touch screen beats out physical buttons any day. Barnes and Noble has a collection of eBooks that is equivalent to Amazon, if not a bit larger. I may be wrong, but I remember reading that B&N has a larger collection of books.

If you are not in a rush to purchase an eBook reader, however, I suggest you wait for the Kindle 4. I assume it will sport a touch screen and will have more features than the Nook. But like I said above, if you need one now, the touch screen Nook is at an advantage.

I love my Kindle 3, I highly recommend it. It is light weight, battery lasts forever, can hold a ton of books, it is great in sunlight, it is inexpensive, 3G without a monthly fee.

The Kindle is pretty much the de-facto device in this area. And it's backed by Amazon, who at the very least, are quite serious about reading, and have the resources to continue to develop products to facilitate that activity.

Not sure about Nooks and crannies and whatever other e-readers are out there - probably here today, gone tomorrow (and who knows about future support??) - so you're better off with Amazon.

The one thing that the other Ereaders have going for them like the Nook is they can read Epub something the kindle does not support but really wish they would. Epub is open source DRM and is something that would allow electronic book reading from say you public library. Something that is not done yet on the kindle.

That being said I recomend the kindle I love it.

Well, I picked up a kindle, the special offers version. I'm generally pleased with the unit. One major difference that is both the advantage and disadvantage is the screen size.

I'm use to my iPad so the small screen while readable needs getting used too. Of course thats the reason why I bought it. So I can easily hold it on one hand and read it while commuting.

I waited for tax free weekend here in Mass and that might have been a mistake because every place I looked was sold out. I did find it at a best buy mobile store in the mall. We were doing back to school shopping for my kids which afforded me the ability to look for the kindle :)
