I don't think people get fast hardware to "gloat". You need the fast hardware if you do anything besides web surfing and using office. Heck, recording TV and formatting for ipod takes a quad G5 if you want it done anytime in the day.

Again, your statement proves the inferiority of the PPC platform! EyeTV running on my Mini can handle this quite adequately :)

I meant encoding the eyetv video to ipod and stuff. Ofcourse it records fine. Eyetv is great.

Well. I switched to the Vaio as my main computer. Moved all my files over. Used it for one day and said SCREW THIS. I am back on the mac. WHY?

1. Too hard to find files in explorer.
2. No eyetv.
3. No way to clone a disc unless I pay $50 or more.
4. Desktop pictures on both monitors were the same.
5. Couldn't find a program that would edit out tv commercials like eyetv.
6. Some of my ipod videos would not play on xp.
7. No expose!

So XP sucks. We all knew that. I guess I just forgot.

Interesting note. I took out my raptor and put it in the pc. WHOOOOOAAAA. How slow my G5 is now. That thing is unbelievable. I have to get another one now. GET A RAPTOR!

Haha, it takes only one day to miss OS X. :) But yeah, I couldn't go through an average day on my computer without using Expose or Spotlight.

WHAT DO I DO?

TALK ME OUT OF IT!

Ok for starters i did ... I still use code in Xcode for all the mac related programs that i have to write. But i am currently apple free when i sold my imac G5 yesterday. Keeping up on any platform costs you a lot (arm & leg). But keeping up with apple costs even the head. All this keeping up aside. I am much more worried / Annoyed with apple's fickle mind. Apparently they seem to have it much worse than me!!! So no more apple for me. I am back happy in my Windows/Solaris [on two thinkpads] world as ever. Most of my applications are on windows anyway. THe only thing i use mac is for XCODE when i have to develop some apple specific experiments in the Lab. Thats about it.

Could you give some further explanation of what you mean by, "Apple's fickle mind"?

Aesthetics help usability. You won't spend all your time glaring over how ugly your box is.

Or to look at it another way, the fact that Mac OS X looks good makes you look at the screen and be productive.

:D :D :D

Because some people value aesthetic experience. Others don't. Takes all kinds. It helps that Apple's aesthetic isn't just "looks for looks sake." Yes, they have an eye for beauty, but that beauty is always defined by the function of the machine. In other words, their aesthetic is driven by their engineering goals. Look inside a G5 and tell me it's not functional, that form got in the way of function. No, it followed it, but Apple put some real WORK into making that functional form be attractive as well. I think there's value in that.

I have doubts quite a lot i was always on windows until 2003 when i got my first mac.

I wanted windows because in theory it seems better.
Computer upstairs for gaming and normal day to day use
Media centre computer downstairs with all music, video, and photos on, with built in TV tuner to record

but then it all gets a virus, and crashes!

Why can't apple make something like this, well they do, its just more money, doesn't have as many games and you need an eyetv for the tv and cant do it through front row.

if you do a lot of video work, stay with apple. final cut studio is just such great value you can't match it on the peecee side.

talking about value, i think quite a few people here have missed a good point, including you, mactruck!

yes, you can buy a maxed out XP system for $2k, or the equivalent mac for $5k, but think about how long each will last before you end up upgrading them...

i've got a dual 2.5Ghz PMG5 and i've never had to upgrade it. it's now got FCS 5.1 on it, Adobe CS2, Aperture, all the latest software still runs as well as when it was new. i'm not going to have to upgrade that beast for another 3 years, at the earliest. if i'd got a peecee, i'd have upgraded it within six months. that's what i was used to before this G5 came into my life - buy, upgrade, upgrade, buy, upgrade... etc. i never had a peecee (including "top of the line") that i had more than 4 months before i had to start pouring money into it.

just look very carefully at maintenance and upgrade costs - work out a TCO for both, the mac'll come out cheaper.

and then, if you're still unconvinced, look at adware/spyware/viruses and compare them there. there's one thing i couldn't stand on my video system and that was running all this extra, power-sapping, crap, just to keep it all clean.

i could never move back to a Windows based machine. it was just so much hassle. and FCS really is the dog's balls.

i have exactly the same problem, but found a solution - i just don't bother going to classes any more :D

Windows XP is a 5 year old OS. It can't hold a candle to Tiger. Plus Tiger/Mac OS X is so much better to use. I use XP at school and sometimes when my bro or sis come home from college on their laptops. So hard to use after using Mac OS X. Glad you didn't switch.

Wishing for a magic bus.
I use ExPee at school and at home (im saving up for a mac). I'd have to say that if there was no way to modify the Windows GUI to something other than Teletubby mode, I'd would have bought a really low-end Mac right there. At least at home i can have Mac cursors, icons, sounds, and semi Tiger like GUI, and 1280x1024 resolution on a decent monitor. At school, I have no idea what the IT department was thinking when they bought 19" LCDs then decided to lock all resolutions above 800x600. Mmmmmm, gotta love that 100 pixel high start bar. Then they decided to lock out programs like Firefox, which in their opinion is worse then IE, and won't let students change the GUI at all.

PS: I almost got expelled after throwing a mouse ball at the IT Supervisors face.
