Wouldn't a Moto G be a step backwards coming from a iPhone 5? Money isn't a issue I've got a spare $700 to spend for this device so if that's the only reason it's been getting recommended I honestly don't mind spending more.

It's a good step to introduce a user to Android and it's marketplace / software.

Performance is a good mid range device despite its low range price point.

Basically for £100 you could dip your toes in, see if android is for you and if not stay with iOS or look elsewhere.

So yes the 5S is a more powerful phone, but for £100 the moto g is a good dip into the android pool.

Very well stated. After reading that, I agree with you :)

Well thank you--every once in a while I can put together a reasonably cohesive thought or two. ;) What's the saying, 'even a blind squirrel eventually finds a nut?'

I would say the only massive step back is in the quality of the camera. It's probably weaker than the iPhone 4 camera.

The build/materials will obviously be a step back too, although I would not describe the moto g as poorly built.

Aside from that, moto g felt like a step up for me. But I was coming from a 4S, not a 5.

But if you do decide to jump straight to a top end device, I reckon going for a google play edition phone instead of a skinned phone would be better for you.

plastic USB cover is not ideal, its the one part of the phone your going to be putting in and out every day as you charge and the risk of it breaking off and leaving you with a banjaxed / defaced cover.

Or you can use wireless charger for about $20-50. BTW, I used to have LG Thrill 4G has a cover like that since 2011, and I never had problem with that (gave that one to a friend last year, and she's still using it fine).

What's applications do you guys recommend? Also keep in mind I have a iPad and MacBook Air so would love something cross platform. I am going to the store to later to try some phones and I might purchase one :)

Questions:

Do you have a job and/or use your phone as an working/studying accessory or as a toy?
Android isn't laggy by any means, it just isn't as fast and fluid. I just find (based on experience, friends, etc.) that Android isn't worth it on the high end (on any metric), when the iPhone is available, unless you really want a bigger screen.
Why not try it for yourself (use a friend's phone)? Is a bigger screen worth more over saturation, pentile displays, less battery life on mobile networks, less speed, etc.?

Wow, biased much?.. you are talking about an s4/s5, wen the op already mentioned the HTC one which has is generally considered the best phone on the market by anyone who isn't swayed by one camp or another..

The new HTC one M8 blows that opinion out of the water. Its like a v8 racing a mini :)
