So I just received my Mini today, it is very tiny - much smaller than I expected. I will try and use it for a couple of days, then I will make my decision - Mini or base iPad/same-vintage Air (if I can afford the latter, which doesnt seem that likely)

Personally I don't see the reason why someone would prefer the ipad mini. Its overpriced for what it is and if you have the pro max version of the iphone, the mini size is irrilevant imo. At this point just use your phone. Personally, I found the 11' ipad to be the perfect size. Not too big, not too small and its comfortable to hold for a long period as well.
The screen on the Pro Max is small compared to Mini screen. It is much easier to browse the web and look at photos on the Mini screen. I’d rather have a regular sized phone for maximum portability and carry the Mini when I need more space. The Pro Max just forces you to carry something less portable all the time. Maybe that is what you want but not everyone will make that same decision.

Right now, I have narrowed it down to 2 possible candidates: iPad Mini 6 64gig or iPad 10 (again 64gig), …
BTW both devices now come with 128GB of storage standard. The 64GB models were so restricted that if you kept any files, iMessage history, or photos, then it could be hard to install OS updates. 128GB is a more comfortable starting point.

Other than size, you may want to consider the difference quality of the display and speaker, between 13” Pro to 7” mini. It’s subjective for each person.
