I actually went and got the 5S on opening day and a few weeks later I switched it for a Note 3. As of Saturday I went back to the 5S and so glad to be home! It would nice to get at least a 5 inch screen but if not im fine with the smaller screen, seems like a normal size screen after all.

I love my ipad air, and im starting to like the ios more than the android even though its more restricted, its also more stable and has better and more apps.

The only thing keeping me from selling my samsung galacy s4 and getting the 5s right now is the display size, if rumors are true and the iphone 6 really is getting a bigger screen count me a new apple fanboy!

If you can afford to and you really can’t wait till around the back end of this year, then you could always buy the 5S now and then sell it when the next iPhone is released.

One thing I have noticed about iPhone’s (and other Apple products too) is that they really hold their value and this makes for a good price when you sell them on, providing it’s in good condition.

Nobody knows quite yet if the next iPhone will even have a larger display and such like the rumors we have seen and heard about.

Please understand, that the rumors could be false. Nobody knows what the future is for the iPhone just yet and what things we will be seeing in the next generation of iPhone products.

Speaking about my preferences and experience, the only way I can determine what an ideal screen size for me is to buy a few phones one with each of the various sizes of displays. There's no substitute for first hand usage. Thus I've had sizes 4.3, 4.5, 4.7, 4.8, 5.0, 5.5, and 5.7".

Of these I like 5.0" the best by a very wide margin. It's the size featured on my Nexus 5 and quite ideal. A very close second is the 5.7" of my Note 3. Because I use mine for all the reasons a smartphone exists, I need the working room for fast typing input via SWYPE. In addition it greatly reduces the amount of scrolling required by a tiny 4.0" display.

If the iPhone 6 is only 4.7" that's not enough for me. Personal preference, heavy frequent usage for emails, web research and the like demands a 5". So that's the sweet spot for me.

YMMV

It's not so much screen size as it is the dimensions and ergonomics of the device. Look at the 4.7" Moto X and the 4.7" HTC one, big difference in dimensions.
Back on topic as a long time android user and lover especially with Google's latest approach to uniform it's apps with sliding out/up and down windows I will be really tempted by a bigger iphone as the screen size is the only reason I don't have one now. The most important reason is my aging eyes.

Is the big screen requirement because you actually need it? Or just because of going with the trend?

I have a feeling there are a ton of current Android users in the same boat as the OP. iOS usage may see a big boost if Apple makes the bigger screen sizes. I know alot of people are opposed to it but unfortunately thats the direction the industry is headed with smartphones. I for one think 4.7" - 4.8" would be the sweet spot... anything bigger is a little cumbersome to walk around with as a phone. But that's just my personal opinion I totally understand and respect if someone has a need or like for a 5.5" phone

After the whole iPhone 4 in the bar fiasco I feel like secrecy has gone down the toilet with Apple releases. I haven't been surprised with anything on release date since then. I feel like these rumors are more and more accurate, the iPhone 5, 5S, iPads... we saw parts, specs and full products ahead of time for all of these... So for those holding out hope that Apple will not make bigger screen sizes I think you are going to be dissapointed.

I got rid of my iPhone 5S for a Nexus 5 and the Nexus is more stable than my 5S with iOS7.

I have been a long time iPhone person, in fact I owned every iPhone except the 3G, and I honestly don't know if a larger screen alone will bring me back to apple. I am incredibly happy with my Nexus 5 and when you factor in the price I may be sticking with Nexus for a while unless the combination of iOS8 and the new hardware really wow me.

I think a bigger phone would be a succes.

I've been thinking about the iPad, and back in 2010 everybody was like "It's just an iPhone with an enormous screen!" And that's just it. The iPad is an iPhone with an enormous screen - and that's why people love(d) it.

I think that a bigger display, if done in the right way, will improve the user experience and will be a succes for Apple.

Until the Mini came out which outsold the larger iPads. Portability won! :D

Larger smartphones, phablets and larger tablets. Sorry folks you don't have to buy it but eventually you will have no choice. :D

And then we will develop some strange health condition for using stuff that is too big for our hands and OEMs will be forced to do a 180 :)

I'm in the same boat. Screen size is one of the primary reasons I left the iPhone. I use an iPad daily, and a MacBook, and an Apple TV so I'm not anti-apple at all. I just genuinely wanted a phone with a bigger screen. I am mostly content with the GS4 but I really hate the camera and I think the build quality is poor. But in general Android is really stabilizing. It has come a very long way and I can see some clear advantages/disadvantages to both systems.

If iPhone 6 has a larger screen I'll likely go back myself.

I agree with this.

I bought my S4 in May and the only reason I bought it over the iPhone is the screen size. I wanted a bigger screen than the iPhone and chose what I felt was the best Android phone with that.

I think Apple offering a 4.7/4.8 inch iPhone would be a step in the right direction. I would likely make the jump to iOS if that happens.

My last iPhone was the 4s. I'll probably get the 6 since it'll be a refresh in design and the screen can't get any smaller. Hopefully for 4.7 at least.

I look at it this way with smartphones. Folks have been living years upon years with large handsets at their homes for making and receiving calls with atrocious size buttons to press. That said, how is a smartphone too big???? :D

I understand your point, which is what's nice about Android, we have choices. The reason I prefer the largest display that I'm comfortable holding, is due to the reduced scrolling required. I can view lots of information a smaller screen just doesn't show. A power user, I need all the screen real estate I can get. As a long time Apple enthusiast it's frustrating that they've been stuck on small displays for so long. I like to use both Android and iOS, but Apples obsession with a tiny phone prevents many of us from using their demure device.

S4 here too.

I think TouchWiz is bloat and I'm running Nova launcher prime.

Also I don't like how I can take a picture from the lock screen if I have a pass code on my phone.

I think the iPhone 5 camera is better easier to use.

TouchWiz really sucks

Programs are cool not complaining.

TouchWiz really sucks

I think the screen size is awesome, battery beats the 5 by a Mile.

Not as stable but I can love with it.

Debating trading for a nexus 5.

Touchwiz really sucks.

The moto x is 4.7 inches. And it's form factor isn't much bigger than iPhone 5/s.

Apple can easily make 4.5-4.8 inch phone with very little compromises.

I was stubborn for quite awhile until the middle of last year with getting an Apple device with a small screen. I bought the Ipod Touch 5th gen and while I never use it as much as my smartphone and a different animal per se, it wasn't really too small at all.

I kept debating about the 5s since I'd be using it that much more so I took the plunge and sold the Touch. I'm not sorry I did at all about its size and I have a Note 3 as well which is much bigger and I still feel that way.

I will say I'm not a power user so it is understandable some would feel this way that need screen real estate but even some that are in that category have lived with it no doubt. What a great piece of kit!!

out of curiosity why is screen size a big issue for you? i know myself and a lot of others are fine with the 4 inch, even the 3.5 inch but wouldn't mind a larger display.

For me the tiny 4" skinny screen is just way too small and makes the horrible keyboard hard to use.

If Apple puts out a 5" screen, ill definitely take a look but it would be nice if they opened things up some too.
I always hated their keyboard so having choices would be great but i dont expect it.

I had a Nexus 4, currently have a Nexus 7 and Nexus 5. Can't wait to switch to the iPhone 6 if there is a bigger screen.

even with a bigger screen the features of the iphone just don't compare to what you can get on android for my needs. So apple increasing the screen isn't the only thing they need to do.
