I'd like to ask the panel. Has there been any reported instances of people NOT updating their phones or computers and then suffering some sort of catastrophic failure, virus, or security breach? Just wondering.

Not talking about isolated instances which is usually due to user error. I mean even the dreaded Meltdown and Spectre seem to be still out there with no permanent fix, but hardly a peep about it these days. How many Apple users have really suffered from not updating their OS?

I do wish Apple would have the option of "Skip this update" or "don't remind me again" vs the "remind me again tomorrow" as the latest option.

It would be nice. At least they haven't moved to Microsoft's "Updates are ready. They are being installed whether you like it or not. If you delay it. You'll just wake up to a new version of Windows 10 with all the MS store apps you deleted reinstalled."

Yea, I just went ahead and used Group Policy to disable Windows update. Used a third party program to remove those un-removable apps. Then fiddled with everything else I don't like via regedit, group policy, local security policy, &c.

Although Apple has those annoying background processes you can't stop. Even using sudo. Unless you boot into recovery mode and disable their security program through Terminal. They've also gotten more draconian about installing third party apps that aren't verified. I wonder how much longer until they block them entirely?

Take your case to Judge Judy.

She'll know what to do with you :D

I'd LOVE to know how much of Apple's money you believe you are owed for the psychological trauma of........UPDATE NOTIFICATIONS.

Legally bound or not, it's pretty piss poor that I have to resort to hacks (installing a tvOS beta profile, really?) to try and stop my iPhone updating.

I've unchecked the "automatically check for updates" in the App Store settings on my Mac, so hopefully, now I'll be left in peace.

I was lured to Appleland almost 10 years ago when they launched the MacBook Air. There wasn't a Windows laptop like it, and Microsoft looked to be losing their way with Windows 8. Lots of devices to choose from these days, so it might be time to switch again...

This might be the weakest reason for switching platforms that I have ever read on the forums. That being said, it’s much easier than suing

do you still use that?
im typing on mine now, love the machine!

No, I sold it in 2013 when I bought my 3rd MBA. It was used by me for 3 years, during which time I added a 3rd party SSD and then for another few years by my partner (who gets my cast of machines). I still have the 2010 machine, which I'm playing around with Linux and FreeBSD as potential options, and my partner now has the 2013 one.

I'm using a 2016 MacBook which is fine, but I would have much preferred a retina MBA. Can't see me replacing that with another Mac when my 3-year replacement cycle is reached, similarly to how I didn't replace my iPhone 7 with an X which I would have normally on my phone 2-year replacement cycle. Can't justify spending £1200 on a phone when my laptop cost £1300!

Apple seemed quite a long way ahead of the game a few years ago when their eco-system was pretty unique having everything sync seamlessly across devices with some of the best thin premium laptops. The competition is catching up, and in some cases maybe even caught, and the increased price of Apple's devices makes it harder to justify the difference. I'd need to find replacements for some macOS only applications, but I managed that with some Windows-only ones 10 years ago.

Anyway, I know people don't like an Apple whinge on this site, so I'll close the door on the way out if/when I jump ship.

...Doesn't unchecking "Automatically check for updates" in the OSX preferences solve your issue?

A negative consequence of that choice is, as far as I know, that it will also negate the choice of the system preference "Install system data files and security updates" (automatically). Although these links are dated, to the best of my knowledge they're still relevant.

i was posting on another thread how that era of 2008-2012 was fun and we confidence on apple products,
i love my macbook air 2010 were i feel fortunate to but that, and fell ashamed i tried using the 2017 iPad to type, which i have difficulties with anyway.
Actually my iPad is acting up lately, safari wise were some wifi needed apps don't function unless i reboot the iPad.
this get worse after every iOS upgrade.

LOL you must not come here often.

On the thread topic: I resist certain updates for awhile sometimes, but generally not on my main workhorse machines and never on my most recent iOS devices. I read up on the updates regarding earlier hardware.

Usually for me on a laptop my only serious resistance to updates centers on checking out iTunes updates ahead of time on a spare machine with a representative setup. I maintain a lot of iTunes libraries separately and don't fancy discovering something with significant impact on my "production" setups the hard way.

Ok, I’ll ask the obvious question that has t been asked yet... why don’t you update? And why don’t you just leave auto update on and never be bothered?

I don't automatically update because I like to see some reviews first. I can't count the number of times people experienced bugs after updating which required ANOTHER update.

you don‘t have a case, that‘s how you bought it and how it‘s intended to work. still, the constant nagging is annoying, if you don’t want to update mid-project. and automatically downloaded updates on ios that sit in the background and take up space are a pita.

updates do break things, e.g., when i update my main computer’s OS, and then update final cut pro, updated projects are no more compatible with final cut pro on my laptop, which can’t update beyond el capitan. updating can break expensive older plugins too. so, upgrading mid-project is often a risk - that’s why many professional workstations i see in the wild still run ancient versions of osx. there’s often not enough downtime to mitigate an update that broke something, and, anyways, never change a running system. so i don’t update and click away the notification every other day, which is not a good user-experience, imho. disconnecting those machines from the net won‘t work either, because nowadays a lot of software will stop working if it doesn’t phone home to check it‘s license. (e.g. afaik adobe cc will stop working after 30 days)

the more sensible approach would probably be to drum up a campaign to get as much feature requests as possible about an option to disable this behavior to apple.

Apple isn't going to give people the option without some external pressure. They like their iOS adoption pie charts too much at the beginning of every WWDC keynote. Tim bragging that they have over 75% adoption of the previous years' iOS version always makes me cringe, as it no surprise due to the number of times most people will have been harassed to update over the previous 12 months.
