They could continue producing the 17" as is to fill the emac role but I think the mini is officially in that position.

Most of the complaints I remember about a gap in the line up fall between the high end iMac and the low end Mac Pro.

I am aware of that but it's mentioned so often here that I didn't think someone would misconstrue my statement.

I don't think so. That product has been asked (read: prayed) for years. Screens are only going to become bigger and bigger over time.

I do remember a rumor from the last year of a 17" Apple display.

I hope not...or atleast a drop in price for the 20''. But I can't see the 20'' going to 999...so that means Apple should keep the 17'' atleast for edu market...but then people will want it, and it will turn into the eMac(when it wasn't for sale to the public, then it was)

But then again I'd love the 20'' for 999!

If the 20" made it down to $999, then that would certainly answer my "macbook + imac VS macbook pro" debate!

I wouldn't put much stock into this rumor by ThinkSecret.

Apple is not going to drop the 17 inch iMac model for the time being.

If anything, they will drop the prices and a full featured 17 inch model with Superdrive will become the low end version costing under $1,000, and maybe under $900.

But the 17 inch iMac will not go away for a while.

Seriously, I don't trust ThinkSecret for accurate rumors. In the text of their article they talk about the cost for a 20 inch being about the same as a 17 inch display. At this time, I find that hard to believe due to the actual surface area differences.

If I am wrong, I will will gladly eat my crow warm! ;)

Reference usability. As someone stated earlier in this thread, a 20 inch is to big for some folks. Apple does not have an eMac replacement...yet. A 17 inch with Superdrive, 1GB RAM, decent HD, for around $900, with education prices being about 100 cheaper, would be sweet.

Of course I wouldn't complain if both prices were $100 cheaper! :)

I see future iMacs models as being thinner and offering easier upgrading of the RAM memory and HD.

I guess that we will know soon enough!

Maybe you could both be right. As I said in another thread, if there is an iMac redesign they could keep the 17" as is and sell it under the eMac name. However, I think in Apple's mind the Mac mini already replaced the eMac.

Don't Panic

I think the point this article makes then manages to miss is the fact that 20" and 17" screens cost pretty much the same. Therefore, even thought they may be ditching the 17" imac, what's inside is likely to be exactly the same at exactly the same cost, only with a 20" screen.
Everybody's talking as if it's the worst thing in the world, but it can only be a good thing; Apple have already had their prices around the same point with their lower end iMacs around $1000 and its been doing great, they're not going to change that now.
In summary DON'T PANIC!

They have a camera-less iMac for education purposes...

They should keep the 17" as I might have to buy one (at church) for video editing due to the lack of anything without a monitor in this class that's between the underpowered Mini and the high-priced Mac Pro. I don't want to pay more and find more space for a 20" model...

I was also hoping for a 15" or 13" iMac to commemorate the 30th Anniversary.

(runs and hides...)

I hadn't thought of the Mac mini being the eMac replacement for education. I guess... It just adds more wires for the kiddies to play with.
