Just buy a Mac mini & PC monitor with less than 2mm bezels. It's cheaper and you can upgrade on demand. Not to mention cheaper as well
+1 most people will just buy a Mac mini if they seriously disagree with the direction the iMac is going in for any reason.

I have a 2012 iMac 27", the first iMac to have the design that the 2021 iMac 24" replaced. I look forward to purchasing its replacement when it gets announced during WWDC 2021 or December 2021.

My hope is that the base model will come with 16GB memory & 512GB storage like the 2019 MBP 16" Core i7.

In terms of design the iMac 24" aesthetic is great. It is distinctly an iMac and not a PC. For many the premium paid for an Apple device is because of its physical aesthetic.

The iMac 24" is clearly for consumer use. Up to professionals if they want to use it in their workflow but the vast majority of purchasers will be consumers.

The next iMac I'd buy would be the redesign after the 2021 model. I expect this to occur around year 2030. By then the base model iMac would outperform any Mac Pro marketed in 2021 at a fraction of the power consumption as the node process would be < 1nm.

The base 27" iMac (Intel) configurations all comes with 8 GB memory, so most likely this will be the case when it transition to Apple Silicon.

Only the lowest base spec 27" iMac shipped with 256GB. The next 2 higher tier is 512GB standard.

Somehow I think Apple will continue with such base configurations.

id argue the iMac has really had only 3 designs
- initial 1998 design (CRT)
- 2002 design (base with monitor)
- iMac g5 to present (chin version iMac)

I've identified some conditions for replacing a Mac
  • Tax write-off
  • Per paying project
  • macOS Software & Security Update stops after 120 months
  • New body redesign
  • Not economical to repair when broken
I could lengthen my 2012 iMac 27" to say to the iMac largest screen model that gets released after Nov 2022 so I maximize macOS Security Update. Hopefully it would sport a mini-LED display.

Only issues it has is busted speakers and a dead HDD from a Fusion Drive. Just wish I had that done in 2017 so I can maximize the new SSD & speakers for at least 5+ years.

I think the ratio & proposition of the chin have stayed the same over the years.

A decade from now the smaller iMac would probably be 27" while the larger screen would be more than 32"

So long as they keep the same price points still 1998 then I'm not complaining.
In case me mentioning "shaped like Jay Leno's chin" wasn't enough of a clue, I was being sarcastic. Making light of all the "oh that chin" wailing and pearl clutching of recent.

Apple highlighted that the iMac is 11.5mm thin without batteries.

Apple devices with M1 chips that have batteries are thinner like
  • 5.9mm for 11‑inch iPad Pro
  • 6.4mm for 12.9‑inch iPad Pro
  • 4.1–16.1mm for MBA M1
I think by late 2020s or early 2030s Apple will come out with an iMac that will be less than 6mm thick.

Most users wont give a damn but from a supply chain point of view Apple can maintain the $1,299 price point that they have maintained for the entry level base iMac since 1998.

For those who are not aware the buying power of your $1,299 a quarter century ago is different to what it is today largely due to inflation. 1998's $1,299 iMac is worth $2,139 in today's money.

I would not be surprised that the smallest screen iMac about a decade from now would be a 27" model.

I expect morons to complain "how little" they get for their year 2030 $1,299 iMac 27".
we cannot ignore the fans, right? I mean the real fans.

I think the thinness and light weight have some definite benefits around the home. You can reposition it more easily, turn it, carry it. It’s not a laptop, but you don’t need to confine it to one desk and never move it. You can try putting it in a few different places, move it next to your router to get a wired connection for a large download without laying Ethernet cable throughout the house.

Its convenient when you move house. You no longer get a hernia moving the thing. It’s an all-in-one, you don’t have to look after the camera, the speakers, and the microphone.

And if you want to buy a similarly specc’ed screen, it’s almost impossible, and expensive. The screen is a big part of the cost of that machine, it’s a thing of beauty.

But none of that addresses when I originally said. yes, I agree with you, the iMac isn't made for the computer nerd. Its made for everyday people. But that doesn't mean that everyday people NEED a computer with 11mm of thickness because they will be lugging it around all day. Its not a laptop. Having pretty colors doesn't negate the ability to get rid of the chin and place the PSU components inside the case like it was with previous iMacs.

By that logic, why go to all the trouble and expenditure to have a new model at all. They could just go back to the G3 iMac but put a flat panel in it. Nice, retro, appealing to the consumer, quite inoffensive, on-board power... they could even just have one model in black for the purist wanna-be-pros.

Personally, I'd prefer them to go back to the G4 iMac design. No chin, but very cool. And still on-board power.

Oh, no, I don't think so. By then we'll have Apple Glasses and the debate will be whether 24-inch frames are big enough, or we need to go to 32.
Especially if they came in zany styles like those worn by Elton John ?
